Thoughts of a Mad-eyed Auror

It's a tough job being an Auror. I wonder why I the hell I decided to become one. To spend your days chasing scum who would blow you up as soon as look at you. People say I'm paranoid but your put one foot wrong in this game and you can die. Or worse.

I was lucky that I wasn't hurt worse in the Department of Mysteries incident. I haven't been so involved for quite some time. In the heat of battle you can only see them and you. If you aren't careful you can become as brutal as they are and then the only real difference is who and what you're fighting for. I never crossed that line, even if I did come close to it a few times.

Survival of the fittest, that's what it is. Only those who are careful and keep their wits about them will get through without anything too bad happening to them. And even then things can go wrong.

We've got quite a few in the Order and some of those are Aurors, but I don't really want to speculate on who will be left afterwards. Kingsley's alright, room for improvement of course, there always is, but that Tonks girl. Can't walk two meters without tripping over her feet or anything else that happens to be in her way. She's going to have to improve a lot, fast or she's going to end up dead. Of course, you never know. These things are so bloody unpredictable. That's why you've always got to keep yourself on the alert.

Yeah, it's a tough job being an Auror. Minerva mentioned that Potter was interested quite recently. Before she went to St Mungo's because of that Umbridge woman. Damn Ministry mole. Damn Ministry. Fudge finally came out and said it, Voldemort' s back. I doubt he'll stay much longer in office. People don't like it when you hide stuff from them. Especially something like this.

So Potter's interested, is he? Well, he's good at Defence, and he has a knack for snooping around and figuring things out. Has to get his temper under control though. Can't lose control because someone said something you didn't like about your mum, or what ever it was. Minerva told us about the thing at the Quidditch match. She was furious about the Umbridge toad taking over what was her problem in her house. Sirius was even angrier when he heard about Harry's ban and his Firebolt being confiscated. He looked ready to go sort Umbridge out himself.

Poor Sirius. He didn't deserve to have this happen to him. Betrayed by his own house elf, and then killed by his Death Eater cousin. The house-elf...I don't know what we're going to do with him. I don't think there's anyone left at HQ who can control him now. If Sirius leaves Harry the house in Grimmauld Place, maybe Kreacher will listen to him. But I dunno. And I doubt if Harry wants anything to do with him after what happened.

Harry. Fate has dealt the lad a lousy hand. I'm sure he's beating himself up over Sirius' death. If this war is going to be anything like the last one I know that this death is not the last. But if we all are careful maybe we won't lose so many. I tell people all the time to keep their eyes open and their wands ready, and they just seem to think I'm being paranoid.

Yeah, it's a tough job being an Auror. But it's my job.

Author notes: As I mentioned above, this is my first fanfic. Reviews will be much appreciated.
