Chapter 3: Confusion and Confrontations

Since reading Malfoy's letter, Ginny couldn't decide her feelings for him. Was it pity? Was it concern? Or was it just something else? All she knew was that she wasn't angry anymore; she didn't loathe the boy she was raised to despise. Ginny wouldn't tell anyone about the letter. It wasn't something to make fun of. She still believed strongly, and the letter was proof, that all the rude and inconsiderate things Malfoy did were because he just didn't trust that anyone would appreciate him. And how could he? Living in an abusive house like that would of course torture him. But each day, during her lessons, during meals, all she could think about was that letter. She didn't know why it was affecting her so greatly, but she wanted to talk to Malfoy; maybe she could help him.

Draco couldn't find his letter after running into Weasley. He hoped she hadn't read it.

But she probably did, coming from a nosy family like that. And if she did, she's probably telling all her friends. Oh, this can't get any worse.

But it did, for Draco, anyway. He didn't know what Ginny was doing Wednesday night, but he would after the mail arrived.

"Shit!" he yelled so loudly, Snape treated him to a trademark evil glare. Malfoy had completely forgotten that today he had to go to the studio at three.

"The wonder trio, Weasley, and Chang. I couldn't ask for a better day," he said in disgust. The only good thing was he would be skipping Transfiguration with McGonagall. He glanced down at his plate, noticing that he had another letter.

"Don't forget today," Ginny was telling Harry, Ron, and Hermione at breakfast, "we have to be at the studio by three."

"Oh, that's cool," Harry said vaguely. He was smiling at Cho, who was blushing at the Ravenclaw table.

"Yeah, as long as that git Malfoy stays out of my way," Ron growled. Ginny couldn't help but feel slightly offended by what Ron said.

Why should it bother me? She thought. He's not insulting me.

Malfoy opened the letter. He noticed the Weasley girl looking at it. He sneered at her and she quickly turned away. He scanned the letter in a rage.

I think you might know, but I found your letter when you ran into me yesterday morning. I didn't know it would be yours and I read it. I'm sorry about what's been going on. I kind of figured you insulted everyone for a reason. I promise I'm not like my brother Ron. I doubt you have anyone to turn to besides your mother, so if you need any help or someone to talk to, you can talk to me. I haven't told anyone about the letter, because I don't think it's something to laugh about.
Ginny Weasley

That little--. Does she think I need her crap? I'm fine. I don't need her. She'll get it today at the studio!'

Ginny looked over at the Slytherin table. She didn't know why, but she really wanted to help Malfoy. She saw him opening the letter, but instead of looking grateful, he was sneering more than ever.

Ginny glanced at her watch. "Hey, Ron, I'm going, k? I'll be late for Flitwick." She walked off towards the Charms corridor.

"Okay," Ron said, his mouth full. &qut;Oh, sorry, Harry." He had just sprayed Harry with his porridge, but Harry hardly noticed. Cho was getting up, and, for what might very well have been the first time in her life, she was alone. Harry just couldn't miss this opportunity.

"I'll be, um, going," Harry said, barely getting the words out. He walked quickly towards the Ravenclaw table.

"Hi, Cho," Harry said nervously.

"Oh, hey," she replied shyly.

"Are you heading to class? I can walk you there."

"Yeah, I'm going to Arithmancy."

"Okay, let's go." Cho smiled, nodding, and they left the Great Hall.

Ron, meanwhile, was ogling Hermione.

"Something new you've noticed about me, Ron?" Hermione asked briskly. Ron had been criticizing her for the past hour at least, while she tried to decipher a few Ancient Runes symbols. Ron coughed.

"Um, yeah, I have. You're very..."

"Hideous? Annoying? Bossy?"

"More like charming, attractive, beautiful..." Ron said sheepishly, turning red. He brushed away a few bushy strands of hair on Hermione's face.

"That's sweet." Hermione said, also turning a deep shade of scarlet.

"Hermione... Will you go out with me?"

There. I did it, finally, Ron thought in relief.

"Yes, okay," she said simply.

Easy, no giggling. That's it. God, I love her.

Hand in hand they walked out of the Great Hall, following
Harry's and Cho's footsteps.

"Wait, Cho, the Arithmancy class is that way," Harry said pointing to the left.

"I know, but I want to show you something first," Cho said, stuttering slightly and walking to the right.

"Okay." They walked for a while longer, until Cho gently pushed Harry against a wall.

"There." Cho started leaning in slowly, and Harry, knowing what would happen next, closed his eyes.

And then she b
lurted out, eyes watering, "Thi's where Cedric asked me to the Yule Ball!"

"Oh," Harry said, not knowing what to say at the moment.

"Oh? Oh? Is that all you can say?" Cho asked, beginning to sob.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-."

"I thought you'd understand!" She wailed.

"I'm really sorry, Cho. Listen, I'll take you to class. We'll need to hurry; I have to meet Hermione and Ron about something." Harry shifted uncomfortably.

"No need to take me to class. Just go and meet your Hermione. That's all you talk about!" Cho was running to class.

"Cho! CHO!"

She needs to get over her Cedric, Harry thought, somewhat disgustedly.

At two-thirty that day, six people were off to Hogsmeade, and five of them were relieved to be cutting a lesson. They were each in different moods, and the causes were because of different people. Malfoy was still in rage that a Weasley dare try to be above a Malfoy, while Ginny was still convinced she had acted for the best and that Malfoy was overreacting.

Harry maintained that Cho should have mentioned showing something about Cedric, so he wouldn't have been shocked, and that anyone would expect a kiss in a lonely corridor.

Cho thought Harry should have been a little more understanding about the situation, and that he should have known that it wasn't easy to get over a loved on so fast.

Hermione and Ron, well, they just had their eyes glued to one another, holding hands.

The six of them walked on, not daring to make eye contact, save for Ron and Hermione.

Finally, the Magic World of Glamour came into view. They walked inside. It was a very fancy place, with elegant tapestries hanging from the walls and ornate borders on the walls. Grand chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and a luxurious spiral staircase led to the second floor. The marble floor with its ornate designs added to the majestic ambience.

"Bloody hell!" an awed Ginny whispered.

"Wow! It's pretty rich for a studio," Harry said.

"Yeah, I thought it would be a lot-- simpler."

A thin man appeared in front of Harry, Ginny, Cho, Ron, Hermione, and Draco. He was dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt, which looked extremely out of place.

"Welcome to the Magic World of Glamour. I assume you are wondering why a studio would be this grand?" Five heads nodded. "Well, we take ballroom shots here. In each room on this level and the higher level you will find a different theme that corresponds with the clothes you will be modeling. The set manager can change the themes, also. As you may know, some wizarding events require Muggle clothing, and some wizards just find Muggle clothes more comfortable and practical. I believe you six do too." He scanned their clothes quickly and shifted uncomfortably.

"That is why you will be modeling Muggle clothing along with wizard's robes. The clothes you will model are from Gladrags. You will be starting shooting today, though I doubt we will get much done. We may need to, ahem, fix your poise a bit, change your hair slightly, and add a little makeup." He looked at Ron slouching, Hermione's bushy hair and Harry's messy hair, and Ginny's and Malfoy's pale skin. He seemed put out, as though he were expecting them to have come giving him advice on how to change his looks.

Malfoy snorted. "You mean fix the poise of these bumbling idiots," he said rudel
y, pointing at the other five.

"No. In case you haven't noticed, the style in which you are carrying yourself makes you seem overbearing and aggravating, and you ought to get an attitude adjustment along with the other changes."

Harry grinned at Ron, who had finally torn away from Hermione.

"Anyway, you will each sign a contract agreeing to the terms. Accio!"

Contracts and pens landed to each person. After they had each signed, the man
whisked away the contracts.

"By the way, my name is Mr. Dorrilslo. Oh, and, any rudeness or misbehavior towards one another or to any of the staff, and you will be put on probation. This should limit any, er, confrontations." Mr. Dorrislo looked warily from Harry and Ron to Draco. "The boys changing room is on the left and the girls on the right. And now, please follow me. I am taking you to the costume designer."

They didn't have to walk long before they saw two doors on their right. One said "Costume Designer" and the other "Hairdresser" in flashing letters. Mr. Dorrislo led them to the costume designer door first. She turned out to be a kind, casual young woman in her mid twenties. Her blond hair was in a ponytail, and her blue eyes were twinkling.

"I was expecting you, Mr. D. So these are the models, I presume?"

"Yes, all six are here," Mr. Dorrislo pointed each of them out. "Oh, and Ms. Crismold, call me Mr. Dorrislo, not Mr. D. I'll leave you to it, then."

"Sure thing, Mr. D." Mr. Dorrislo let out a groan and walked out. "First thing, you won't be doing any modeling today. I'll be giving you the tour, I'm kind of manager around here, so I'll be introducing everyone, you know. The tour won't take very long; this place isn't too big. Second, as old D probably already told you, he's going to do all that makeup and poise crud. Okay, some clothes, keyword some, are behind me, categorized by the themes D uses around here."

"This is the size of our old house-elf's room," Malfoy whispered audibly to himself. This startled Harry a bit-he almost forgot Malfoy was there.

"I don't know how much space your old house-elf took, Mr. Malfoy, but I built this office to my standards, and if your old house-elf couldn't fit in here, I'd have to say it would need to lose weight," Ms. Crismold said icily. Malfoy looked slightly abashed. "Everyone that works here has their own office. All the other offices are around the corner except for the hairdresser. They probably won't be in their offices though. They're probably lounging about this place as if it's their home. All right, you six, I'll be back in a few." Ms. Crismold left the office.

"I wouldn't mind living here. Look at all those beautiful clothes," Ginny murmured to Harry.

"Bet this old office is like a palace compared to your place, eh, Weasley?"

"Get stuffed, Malfoy," Harry said angrily.

"Oh, Potter on the rebound from Chang here is going after Weasley, now is he?" Har
ry and Cho both blushed red.

"It's time you realized you're not on top of things, Malfoy." Ginny said, also turning scarlet.

"Let's take your dad as the prime example..." But Ginny still couldn't bring herself to tell anyone about Malfoy's trouble at home.

"He's richer than all of you combined."

"Don't gie us that crap, Malfoy, your father isn't even human," Ron growled. All this was said while Cho stood silently in a corner. Harry was personally offended; he thought she would at least come to h
is and his friends' defense.

"At least I don't walk around with a bloody imbecile like that," Malfoy said, his trademark smirk in place. Harry and Ginny held on to Ron to stop him from diving at Malfoy while Hermione said,

"Takes one to know one."

Just then Ms. Crismold walked through the door. Harry and Ginny let go of Ron. "Okay," she said cheerfully. "Let's go meet the hairdresser." They walked out of the office, Malfoy smirking at Ginny, as Ms. Crismold opened th
e hairdresser's office door.

There, with curlers in his hair, every white tooth shining, lavender robes fitting perfectly, was the beaming face of Gilderoy Lockhart.
