There's Something About Mary

Chapter five

"Where were you?" a sly voice asked behind Mary as she apparated into her grandfather's living room. She turned to see the smirking face of her little brother, Judis, sitting in their granddad's favorite arm chair.

"I was..." Mary left her mouth hang open. "O-out." She eyed her brother suspiciously. "Why? What's it to you?"

Judis shrugged and stood up. He smiled one of his annoying toothy smiles. "Yeah, out, with Mr. Potter no doubt."

Mary punched him in the arm. "Shut up!" she whispered harshly. "Do you want Mum to wake up? What are you doing up at this hour any how?"

Judis shrugged, again, and strutted to the kitchen. Mary sat at the island. Judis opened the freezer, and took out a tub of ice cream their mom bought earlier that day.

"That's mine," Mary growled. Judi smirked and held the ice cream to her. She reached for it, but he took it back.

"It isn't yours," he said. "Don't see your name written on it," he said, examining the ice cream.

"It's mine, I bought it!" she growled louder. She reached for the ice cream again, but Judis backed away from the island. He smiled as he opened it and stuck his face over the top. "Don't you dare," she growled deadlier.

Judis smiled, and puckered his lips.

"If you do, I'll get you for it," she warned.

"What'll you do?" Judis asked, a wad of saliva dropping into Mary's ice cream. She gaped at him, but quickly sneered in a deadly way.

"That...was...my...favorite...ice cream...in...the...world!" she said between breaths.

"What kind is this anyway? It doesn't say," Judis said, examining the tub once again, acting like nothing happened. He looked at it, then back at her, his eyes wide. "I'm sorry!" he apologized quickly. Mary smiled annoyingly. "Rabbit Tracks? That's the best kind!"

"And you ruined it!" Mary yelled. She gasped, and quickly placed a hand on her mouth as she heard rustling coming from above on the second floor. They both looked up, and followed the sound of the footsteps, which were leading to the stairs.

"Shit!" Judis said through clenched teeth. "I'm not supposed to be down here!"

"And I was supposed to be home a long time ago!" Mary whined.

"Well, that would've been carried out if you weren't out with Mr. Potter!" Judis hissed. "What were you two doing anyway?" He turned his head to the side and looked at her with his left eye, squinting in suspicion.

"Now isn't the time," Mary whispered as the footsteps were heard coming down the stairs.

Judis nodded and looked around. He looked back at her and smiled. He looked down at the tub of Rabbit Tracks ice cream, and Mary smiled. She quickly conjured up two bowls and spoons. Judis took his spoon and began dishing up ice cream for them as quickly as possible. Though, unfortunately, he gave Mary the first scoop, meaning she got the spit. She quickly shook her head at him, but Judis dropped the ice cream and began eating quickly. Mary turned her head around to see the shadowed figure of either her granddad, or worse, her mother walking down the stairs. The shadowed figure lazily walked into the kitchen. Mary shoved a spoonful of spit infested ice cream in her mouth.

"What're you two doing up this late?" Mr. Lenerd yawned. He eyed the ice cream, Judis, and then looked Mary up and down. "I'm sure you didn't sleep in that," he said.

Mary nodded, trying hard not to gag out the contents in her mouth. She swallowed, with great difficulty, and nodded. "I did, actually. I was incredibly tired when I got home."

"Then what are you doing up?"

"I can't sleep in normal clothes. I woke up, and decided that I had a craving for my ice cream that I bought," she said to Mr. Lenerd, but glared at Judis.

"And, what are you doing up?" Mr. Lenerd asked Judis.

"Same," he said, picking up his ice cream bowl and quickly rushing out of the kitchen and up the stairs to his room.

Mr. Lenerd eyed Mary suspiciously. "I didn't hear you come in," he said.

Mary shrugged and took another bite of her ice cream, cringing once she remembered who spit in it. "Apparated," she said.

He sighed and placed a hand on Mary's shoulder. "He's a nice man," he said. Mary looked at him weird. "Harry Potter. I know you didn't go to school together, but he is still a very nice man once you get to know him."

"What are you saying exactly?" Mary asked, daring him to speak again.

"I'm only saying that I'm happy Harry has found a friend like you." Mr. Lenerd smiled. "I'm actually starting to think he has a 'thing' for you, as you youngsters call it."

Mary gulped nervously, but ate some ice cream to hide her discomfort. "What do you mean?"

"Harry's a nice boy," he repeated for the third time. "He's all alone, his girlfriend is getting married..."

"What?" Mary hissed. She laughed. "I never thought Harry would be that sort of man! To have two girlfriends, one of whom is getting married!"

Mr. Lenerd chuckled, noting his mistake. "Not that sort of girlfriend," he corrected. "One of his dear friends, Ginny. I hope you get to meet her someday, she's a sweetheart."

Mary smiled. Draco had told her all about his rivalries at school with Harry, and that included his friends. Didn't Draco say to her that Harry was once dating a girl named Ginny? He also said that it didn't last very long. Why did he say? Because he thought it was the fact that Ginny was too uptight and shallow, and once she kissed Harry she got grossed out and decided to break up with him?

Well, whatever the reasons, Mary's granddad talked as if the two are best friends, regardless if they used to go out.

"I hope I get to meet her as well," Mary said. Then it dawned on her...Ginny? "Is her name by any chance, Ginny Weasley?" Mary asked, very well knowing what the answer to that question was...she just needed it confirmed.

"Yep."

Mary nodded, biting her lip, fighting back the urge, with every cell in her body, to break her spoon. So what if that Weasley was getting married? Didn't Draco say that she used to like him? Didn't he say she still does?

That's what Draco said. He told Mary a couple of months back that he was walking down the street when he met Ginny. She looked at him, and smiled, lost of words. Draco said he smiled at her, and Ginny nearly fell into his arms.

Mary's face flushed. Thankfully, the kitchen was dark, and her granddad couldn't see her face.

"So, what I'm trying to say is," Mr. Lenerd said, snapping Mary out of her thoughts, "is that you should ask him out on a date. You know, dinner, candlelight, romantic music, and a tongue tingling romantic good bye kiss?"

Mary sighed. That would make Harry feel better. Well, maybe make up for her mysterious disappearing act...

"I'll consider it," Mary said, slowly walking to her room, ice cream forgotten.

...Which brought her to remember why she left him in the first place. Of course he would be suspicious. She bet, and knew she was correct, that Hermione Granger wouldn't let him forget. If he said Mary went home, probably of sudden sickness or something, Hermione would say, "Well why didn't she come and tell you she's leaving?"

Mary bet all her money that Hermione would say something like that. She knew Hermione was jealous, and she also knew that Hermione was the kind of woman who would think up any excuse for Harry and Mary to break up.

Mary stopped short in front of her closed door. Break up? She and Harry weren't even dating yet! At least, she hoped they weren't yet.

She walked into her room, where her owl hooted happily, hoping for a letter to deliver. Mary shook her head and slumped on her bed. "Not tonight, Destiny," Mary mumbled in her pillow.

Well, at least one thing good happened tonight: She was with Draco.
