- Author's Note:
- Hey, this is the first chapter of my fic. Whoever ends up reading this better be happy with it because it too me forever to write an opener that I liked. I did include the song
Tragedy and Unwanted Gifts
Just a day, just an, ordinary day
Just trying to get by
Catherine Emrys squeezed her eyes shut as a bright light came on directly over her head.
"Well good morning, sunshine. Its good to see that you have finally decided to grace us with your presence," an annoyingly cheerful voice said from the general direction of the door.
"Quit it Mom, its illegal to be that cheerful in the morning before your child gets her essential amount of caffeine," Cat said while covering her eyes and squirming further under her covers.
"Ah, you take all the fun out of life."
"Mom," Cat groaned.
"Party pooper."
"Mom."
"Devil Child."
"Mom!"
"Really, really mean person."
"MOM! I'm up, OK!" she climbed out of bed and began to crawl around the room to find some clothes to wear before she began heading towards the shower.
"You know I love you," her mother said when she was walking out her door.
"No you don't, you just do this to get a good laugh in the morning."
"Yeah, but I still love you."
"And you remind me everyday," Cat responded before she turned on the shower.
"So, what do you want to do tonight? I mean, you're finally 16, we have to do something awesome. Hey, maybe we could order some pizza and make fun of that delivery boy! Then we could watch old movies and eat Oreos!" her mom said enthusiastically.
"Actually Mom," Cat said from the bathroom, "Evan and I were going to celebrate at his house."
"What!"
"You could come over and celebrate with us."
"What would his parents think though?"
"They are over in England visiting his grandparents. If you don't want to stay, OK, but you are required to go out and get the pizza. And you can still make fun of the pizza boy!"
"That's not as much fun," Her mom stated.
"Mom," Cat warned her.
"OK, I'll get the pizza," she said unenthusiastically.
"Thank you, Mom."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever."
"Can I drive Dad's car to school? Please, Mom?" Cat begged.
"I guess, since you are 16 and you are legally old enough to drive without a licensed adult in the front seat and you have covered all of the legal requirements for your license and you have passed the test which means you do have your license then, no."
"Mom!"
"OK, I was just kidding," laughing, Mrs. Emrys handed over the keys to her deceased husbands car. Almost five years ago, Cat's father was walking to the corner store to get some groceries when a car going fifteen miles over the speed limit hit him. The driver ended up being drunk. The worse part was that it was Christmas Eve. The tragedy caused Cat and her mom to become closer, but it would take awhile for Cat to get over it. In fact, the next year was when she met Evan. He helped her get over it. That's actually how they became friends.
Just a boy, just an ordinary boy
But he was looking to the sky
Pulling up to Evan's house Cat felt at peace with the world. He had been her salvation; he had seen her when no one else would. He helped her to open her eyes and see with her heart. He was her best friend and would always be. Her thoughts were interrupted by a door slamming and she turned her head to see her friend waving at her. She waved back and watched as he walked towards the car and got in.
"Ready to go?" he asked her.
"When have I ever been ready to attend that hell hole they like to call school," Cat answered him. Evan laughed at her as she drove off towards school.
And as he asked if I would come along
I started to realize that everyday he finds just what he's looking for
And like a shooting star he shines, and he said
Take my hand, live while you can
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand
*Flashback*
It was Monday morning and Cat was at her usual spot in her usual predicament. After her father died many of her friends tried to comfort her but she just pushed them away to the point of no return. Many people were too afraid to be near her, but she enjoyed her seclusion. That's how she was this morning. All alone in the back of the classroom with her head down on the desk just listening to the noises around her, hoping to be engulfed in its madness and to disappear. She closed her eyes and listened while the bell rang and students began to shuffle towards their seats before the teacher came in.
"Hey, do you mind if I sit here?" she heard a voice say. She looked up to tell the bastard to go away and leave her alone in peace but something stopped her. She saw a boy her age pointing to the seat next to her with a smile on his face but there was nothing unusual about the situation. What caught her attention were his eyes. They were the same deep blue as hers but they had a sparkle to them that caught her attention. She nodded her reply and he sat down before he held out his hand and said in a deep British accent, "Hi, my names Evan, Evan Ambrosius. What's your name?"
*End of Flashback*
And as he spoke he spoke ordinary words
Though they did not feel
For I felt what I had not felt before
And you'd swear those words could heal and
As I looked up into those eyes, his vision borrows mine
And I know he's no stranger
For I feel I've held him for all of time
He had helped her through her father's death and much more after that. He taught her to live her life with what time she had and she did, she did it with him by her side.
And he said
Take my hand, live while you can
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand
"Hey, how was English?" Evan asked Cat when she entered their last class of the day, which also happened to be the only class they shared together.
"What? You mean with the butch? I swear that woman is really a man," Cat stated as they sat down next to each other. Cat then began to pull back her ebony hair into a ponytail as the teacher began to pass out lab assignments to his students. "What is this lab we are doing today?" Cat asked her friend while picking up the assignment.
"Don't you remember, we're burning stuff today," Evan informed her as a smile crept at her lips.
"And of course, since it is my birthday, I believe I get first dibs on the matches, right Evan dear?" Cat stated while reaching over for the matches, which were at the edge of the lab table. Before she reached them, though, Evan grabbed the matches.
"Hey!" Cat objected, "That's no fair you cheater!" Cat then glared at him and Evan just held up the matches over her head, and being a whole head taller than his friend he did this with her unsuccessfully reaching them.
"Actually, I figured, since it's your birthday and all, you wouldn't want to kill yourself," He said with a mischievous smile on his face.
They spent the rest of their class time burning things and arguing over whose turn was next for the matches. When the bell finally rang, Cat and Evan went out to the car and began discussing what movie they were seeing.
"So what movie are we going to?" Cat asked when they reached the car.
"I was thinking we could go see the new James Bond movie," Evan stated.
"What! Why would I want to go see a James Bond movie?" Cat demanded.
"Why wouldn't you want to see a James Bond movie?" Evan retorted.
"Well, you didn't even Know what James Bond was when you got here."
"Doesn't matter, James Bond is the Best kind of movie I have ever seen!"
"It's a movie full of too much testosterone for this girl!"
Evan finally gave up the fight and looked up at her with a cute puppy dog look and said, "Please!"
Cat's shoulders drooped and she then after a while said, "OK, but I am so taking you to a Chic Flic when its your birthday!"
Please come with me, see what I see
Touch the stars for time will not flee
Time will not flee, can't you see...
After the movie they went back to Evan's house to watch a Scooby Doo marathon that was on. Cat called her Mom and told her to go out to get the pizza before she joined Evan on the coach.
An hour later, Mrs. Emrys walked through the door to Evan's kitchen with the pizza. She got out some plates and began to serve it when she heard the door open behind her.
"Oh, hey, I got the pizza," she said as she turned around. But who she saw wasn't Cat, nor was it Evan. But before she could scream she fell to the ground. Dead. The plate that was in her hand crashed on the floor.
Just a dream, just an, ordinary dream
As I wake in bed
And that boy, that ordinary boy
Was it all in my head?
"What was that?" Evan stated, jumping at the sound of china breaking.
"Wha?" Cat responded sleepily as she had fallen asleep on the couch, "Oh, It's probably just Mom. Lets go see what's up." But when they reached the kitchen, Cat opened her mouth to scream, only to have Evan place his hand over it to silence her.
Didn't he ask if I would come along
It all seemed so real, but as I looked to the door
I saw that boy standing there with a deal, and he said
"Quiet, there is someone in the house, if they hear you, you'll be dead in no time," Evan whispered to a worried looking Cat.
"What's going on?" she asked him when he removed his hand from her mouth.
"Look, there is something I have to tell you..." But he never got to finish, because at that moment they heard another crash outside the kitchen. Obviously whoever was in the house, was looking for them as well. Evan quickly grabbed Cat's hand and quietly whispered, "We have to get out of the kitchen!" before dragging her running up the stairs to his room.
Take my hand, live while you can
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand
Evan locked the door behind him before he began running around the room in search of something.
"Evan, please tell me, what's going on?" Cat asked desperately while he was frantically pulling clothes out of his dresser drawer. He then reached the bottom of a chest and pulled out a beautiful glass box. "What is it?" Cat asked in awe as Evan handed her the box.
"Cat, no matter what happens to me don't let whoever is out there to get a hold of this! OK! I wish I could explain to you what is going on but there is no time. If we survive this, I will tell you everything, I promise!" Evan explained as Cat stared at him with a confused expression on her face.
"What the hell do you mean if we get out of this alive!" She demanded while tears finally began to overflow from her eyes. At that moment though the doorknob began to shake, indicating that the intruder had found them finally and was trying to get in. Cat glanced over at Evan as he pulled some stick out of his pocket and pointed it at the door. A few seconds later it was blown off its hinges and the two teenagers were thrown to the floor. When Cat looked up she saw a black hooded figure in a mask glaring down at them. The stranger then pointed a stick at Evan and said some sort of incantation. She looked over at Evan and screamed for in the side of his stomach was a knife. When she looked back at the hooded intruder she saw the stick was then pointed at her.
"Say goodbye to your muggle girlfriend, Ambrosius," the man said in a sinister tone. Cat closed her eyes and prepared for the worst.
"AVADA KEDAVRA!" Cat heard a voice say. In realization she opened her eyes and saw the masked killer laying dead on the floor. She stood up and ran over to Evan to see if he was OK. That was when she realized she was still carrying the glass box. She set it down next to her to check on her friend but he shook his head and put it back in her hands.
"Evan, are you going to be OK!" Cat asked desperately.
"Don't worry about me, you have to get out of here, more of them might be coming," Evan said weakly, "Do you understand, no matter what happens to me you have to keep running."
"Evan, no!" Cat said firmly, "No! I'm not leaving with out you."
"Run, Cat, run!" he said a bit stronger. Cat stood up and began to head towards the door.
"Come on Evan, if we're going to escape now is a good time, the coast is clear!" Cat stated. But when she waited for him to respond she heard nothing. "Evan?" she said again. When she turned around to face him she saw his eyes, the eyes that she had fallen in love with staring cold at the ceiling. There was no life in them.
"Evan!" she said weakly as realization hit her. The box then slipped from her fingers as her body went slack. She felt her knees give out and she fell to the floor. As if it were miles away she heard a crack as the glass hit the hard wood floor. Then there was a bright light, and then nothing as darkness once again took her over.
Just a day, just an, ordinary day
Just trying to get by
Just a boy, just an, ordinary boy
But he was looking to the sky
Author notes: So...um....that's it. I hope you liked it. Please Read and Review. I want to know how bad I am at writing...or good. Both would be ok too. So, the next chapter will be up...I don't know when, but it will happen so hang tight. It will be the Chapter when she finds out everything, about Evan and Hogwarts.
