Chapter 8

Ginny sat, waiting for Malfoy to come. She sat under the tree and was reading a new book. She was getting impatient with him. She could not believe he was late and it was starting to rain.

She suddenly felt him sitting next to her. She glanced at him and saw his hair slightly dishevelled. More pieces were falling into his eyes, but he appeared calm.

"What happened to you?" she asked.

"God, what is it today? Question Malfoy day or something?" he snapped.

"Jeez, I was just asking what happened to your hair," she said, snapping back at him.

He rolled his eyes and ignored her. Ginny decided to ignore him too, if he was going to be like that. Besides she was still embarrassed about this morning and was in a grumpy mood, because of his attitude.

"I wouldn't expect you to say sorry or anything," she said.

He rolled his eyes. "Say sorry for what?"

"For snapping at me," she said.

"You were the one who asked me what happened to me," he said defensively.

She in turn rolled her eyes back at him, "So-rry for asking." She left him there under the tree and went beside the lake. Since it was raining, there weren't many students outside.

Ginny loved the rain. She thought it was so fun and exciting, especially when there was thunder and lightning. She just didn't like it when she was in it.

She watched the water ripple and watched the rain as it sprinkled over the water. She had always wondered why, whenever it rained, the oceans and lakes never flooded.

Suddenly, she felt his arms around her waist. She felt that strange feeling in her stomach again, a feeling of uncertainty mixed with a bit of excitement.

He leaned down and started kissing her. This time it wasn't the brief but sweet kiss; it was slow and long.

Ginny was taken back. She considered this his way of saying sorry, since he once told her that Malfoy's never said the word sorry.

She kissed him back and suddenly she felt his hands taking down her hair. She felt like giggling, because she was really ticklish, as his hands combed her long, thick, wavy hair. But she controlled herself because she knew that it would come out really weird in the kiss.

They finally stopped and Ginny was breathless, from the kiss and from the shock.

"Wow," he breathed. "You're one hell of a kisser."

Ginny blushed again, but smacked him with her book. "You scared me so badly!"

He grinned at her, "How was I supposed to 'say' sorry to you, then?"

Ginny laughed and said, "Ha! So you admit it! You said sorry, you broke a Malfoy rule."

He shrugged and said, "Not really. I said it in the kiss, but you couldn't hear me."

Ginny laughed harder until she had to sit under the tree.

"By the way, I got held up by Crabbe, Goyle and Pansy. They kept on asking me questions about where I was."

"What did you say?"

"I told them I was with a gorilla."

"What?!" she screamed, running after him as the clouds opened up and the downpour really began.

*~*~*

Later that night, Ginny was in her bed. She was remembering the kiss. It was the best kiss she had ever gotten. She smiled a bit to herself. The plan was working; she was getting closer and closer to him.

She fell asleep with the image in mind; of how humiliated he would be when he found out that Ginny didn't love him at all.

The next morning, Ginny left the Great Hall early, just as she spied her friends coming. She felt guilty that she was avoiding them, but it was crucial for her plan. Otherwise, if she told her friends the plan, Padma might blurt it out and it might reach his ears.

So that's why she kept the secret to herself.

It was a beautiful day and she had Charms first, so she went outside to meet Malfoy. She sat him standing in front of the lake, waiting for her.

She decided to surprise him, so she walked up to him and said, "Boo!"

He smirked at her and said, "I knew you were coming."

"Oh," she said, frowning. "Fine then."

"I've got Quidditch practice, tonight," he said, "so I won't be able to come out after classes."

"That's ok," she said. "I can just sit in the stands and do my homework."

He laughed. "What homework, Weasley? The homework you don't get done at lunch?"

Ginny laughed and playfully punched him in the arm.

"Oh great," he muttered under his breath.

"What?" she asked him.

Ginny turned around and saw her brother and his friends. She would be dead meat if she were seen with Malfoy.

"Quick! Transfigure me into something!" she said.

Draco whipped out his wand and muttered some words. The next thing Draco knew, in his hands was a book of fairy tales.

He smirked when he saw the title 'Feisty Fairy Tales', but tucked it in his book bag, considering the embarrassment he would face if they saw it.

They walked past him and Potter gave him a dirty look.

"What was that for, Potter?" he asked, sneering. "If I woke up every morning looking like you, I'd have that look on my face too, permanently."

Granger steered them away before they could do anything, and Draco laughed.

Then he took out the 'Feisty Fairy Tales' from his bag and transfigured it back to Ginny.

"Feisty Fair Tales?" he asked her, mocking her.

She blushed slightly and said, "Don't ask me! You're the one who transfigured me!"

He smirked and then said, "Yes, but it all depends on the person's personality."

Ginny laughed and said, "Let me try to imagine what you would be? 'Evil and Dark Ways' or how about 'Hot Hair Styles'?"

He smirked and pushed a stray piece over his ear. "I think I like the Hot Hair Styles."

She laughed, "What hot hair styles? You only have one hair style."

"It's a hot hair style," he pointed out.

Ginny laughed, "I'm trying to imagine other hair styles, but it just doesn't work. All I see on you is that one you have now."

He nodded and said, "That's why I only do this one."

Ginny checked her watch and said, "It's almost time for class, and I better go."

He nodded and said, "Same here. See you at lunch."

"Wait, wait, wait!" she said. "I've got to go to the library, so can you meet me there?"

"The library?" he looked most displeased. "Just like Granger."

She smacked him, "I am not! I need to study for exams; otherwise I'll fail. You should study too."

He smirked and said, "Right, I will, Ms. Granger-wanna-be. Fine I'll meet you in the library."

She smiled, but when he tried to kiss her, she pushed him away. "Nope, you called me a Hermione, so Hermione would never in a million years kiss you. So bye."

She left him standing there and walked backwards up the hill, laughing at him.

He looked sad that he didn't get his kiss, but laughed when she fell over her own two feet while walking up the hill backward.

Ginny just smiled at him a bit and left to her class.

Draco stared at her until she had left and then made his way to his class.

At lunch, they met each other in the library. Ginny studied for her exams and so did Draco.

During this time, he saw a more serious side of her, showing him that she could be serious when she wanted to.

Right now, they were having a very serious conversation.

"So what do you want to be after you leave Hogwarts?" he asked her.

Ginny looked up from her book and smiled at him, "Why isn't that the most um...thoughtful question I've heard from you...ever."

He smirked at her then said, "Just because we've never had a serious conversation doesn't mean I'm not capable of it."

Ginny laughed and said, "All right, then. We'll have a serious conversation."

"So, what do you want to do when you leave Hogwarts?"

"I want to be an auror," she said seriously.

He glanced at her face, for any signs of a smile, but there was none.

"Are you serious?"

Ginny nodded, "Of course. Dark magic has ruined my family, and I want to devote my life to it. My older brothers, Bill and Charlie and my father died in the second war when Harry defeated He who must not be named. Fred is in St. Mungos because of his brain damage from all the spells and George was never found again. We don't even know if he's still alive, but we hope he is. Lord...lord," she gulped, trying for once and for all to say his name.

"Lord...Voldemort ruined my family. His dark magic took away my family and my friends. Harry will never be the same again, and for that same reason his two best friends Ron and Hermione will never be the same again. I want to be spend my entire life fighting the dark magic, so no one else's family has to take that pain."

"The Dark Lord ruined your family?" he asked. "I didn't know about that."

Ginny laughed sarcastically, "No one did, Dumbledore kept it quiet, thankfully. Bellatrix Lestrange killed my father. Ron almost killed Mum and me, because of the Imperius curse, but he stopped just in time. Bill and Charlie both died from the pain of the Cruciatus curse. Fred fought the Cruciatus curse and the Imperius cure and from that he left alive, but both those curses damaged his brain. George was seen on the last night of the war, but never after that. His body was never found again either. Percy got corrupted for power and joined the Dark side. I had an older sister as well, but she died in the first war when she was seventeen."

"I didn't know you had an older sister," he said, surprised.

"I didn't, really. She was my cousin actually, my mum's eldest sister's, who died in the war, daughter. She was about sixteen when she died."

"Oh," he said. "I can't believe so many people of your family were impacted. I never knew it was that bad."

She nodded sadly and Draco could see her eyes shining. "I want to help the good side, even though Lord...Voldemort is gone now. Harry, God bless him heaven, spent all of his energy and time to make sure the rest of us weren't blown to smithereens. I want to be out there, helping the other Aurors, to make sure the last of the evil is destroyed."

She finished her speech and sighed. "Sorry to tell you all about this, but that's the reason why I study so hard, because I want to be an auror."

He nodded at her. "I understand. The evil that you want to fight against is the same evil that ruined my father. It's the same evil that made him always away when I started to learn how to talk. It's the same evil that kept him away when I learned how to walk, read and write. When I learned my first spell, when I rode my first broom, my first day at Hogwarts, he was never there for me," he was now looking out the window, not even talking to Ginny anymore, it was like he was talking to himself.

"My mother was there rarely; I grew up with houselves, who cooked and cleaned for me. Whenever I wanted to show my father something, some new spell I learned or something I had accomplished, he would yell and kick me, if I had disturbed him during his dark work. I only wanted him to look at me, or just acknowledge me in some way, but he never did. I grew up with resentment and became bitter and cold, just like him.

"As I turned 8, I stopped begging my father to race with me or to play potions. My father became the governor for the school and would always brag about my accomplishments to his friends. I thought he loved me, but he was just boasting about how his son had taken over the school. He started wishing for me to join the Death Eaters and to become just like him.

"I thought about it a lot," he said, his voice so small that Ginny had to lean over in her chair to hear him. "I thought if I joined the Death Eaters just like him, it would make him proud of me. But then I remembered my childhood and the way my father had been with me. I didn't want to be like that, and I don't now either, Ginny," he said.

"I don't want to be pulled into that force that makes a man forget his family and all the things he loves. I don't want to be the man that my kid craves for me to come home all day and when I do, I whip them. I don't want to follow in his footsteps. I want to be my own person and make my own decisions. And even though, it may sound cruel for me to say this, but I'm glad he's dead," he finished.

Ginny was surprised, her eyes were wide and she kept on staring at him. She didn't know a person could have so much depth; it scared her. She always thought Malfoy was an annoying prat whose main purpose in life was to infuriate her, to great lengths. She always thought he would follow the same path his father had tread on, making him deadly dangerous, but it turned out she was wrong. He was still an annoying prat, but he had a reason behind the bitterness.

"Don't look at me like, Weasley," he said seriously. "I know what you're thinking, and I don't care what it is."

"What?" she snapped. "What am I thinking about?"

His eyes were deadly now, Ginny knew she had crossed the limit. She should've stopped, but she had to open her big fat mouth.

"You think I'm all soft don't you. That I've turned into Potter, that..." he stopped and transfigured himself into a plant.

Ron came around the corner and said, "Hey Ginny. What's up?"

Ginny shrugged, but she couldn't hide the enormous Venus flytrap quickly, sitting in Draco's chair.

"I could've sworn I heard someone's voice," he said. "What's that? Why do you have a plant with you?"

Ginny as usual, couldn't think on her feet. She was very slow and just stared at him for a few seconds, trying to think of something. She blurted out the first thing that popped into her mind.

"I miss George so much," she said. "This is George." She pointed to the plant.

Ron stared at her strangely, trying to figure out whether she was joking or not. Ginny didn't have quick thinking skills but she was a great actress. Her green eyes were big with seriousness and her lower lip trembling.

Ron stared at her for a few seconds and then just left while saying, "Sure, Ginny. That's George and I'm Merlin."

He disappeared around the corner and Ginny transfigured Draco back into human.

"So, what were you saying now?"

He tried to glare at her, but couldn't. Instead he ended up smiling a little and saying, "Good acting. I didn't know you were that good."

Ginny shrugged, picking up her books. "I don't know how good I am, but I just love it. That's why Ron didn't know if I was joking or not, because I always do it at home."

He smiled a bit more, but this got him thinking. If she could make her brother think she was mental, then could she pretend to love him as well? He was confused. What if she was faking it, trying to get him back or something. Hmm, he thought. Perhaps he shouldn't ask her straight our, maybe he should test her to see how much she 'loves' him.

He smirked slightly; he had the perfect plan, to test her 'undying devotion' to him.

She picked up her books and said, "Lunch is almost over, so I've got to go to my dormitory so I can drop off my books. So I'll see you at your quidditch practice then?"

He nodded and said, "You'll need to hide though, or think of some reason for why you're there. Otherwise, my team members will start insulting you and I won't be able to help you."

She nodded and said, "I understand, I'll see then. Bye."

He didn't say anything; he just leaned back in his chair and watched her go.

There was more to Ginny Weasley, than he thought. The way that he thought she was, it seemed like she was the exact opposite. This would cause him to revise his plan a bit.
