Author's Note:
This first chapter may seem a bit light, I can assure you. There's not much romance in it except for the small bit with Ron and Hermione. That's why this chapter is rated PG-13. But most of the story will be rated R. The story will get darker as I go along.

Chapter One - The Love Prediction

"Ah, yes!" Professor Trelawney exclaimed in a mysterious voice. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Draco Malfoy were all in Divination class at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Professor Trelawney was predicting their futures again. "I see that you have confusion in your love life in the near future, Mr. Potter...beware of burdens." Some of the students in the class started sniggering at this, Malfoy especially.

Hermione just rolled her eyes when Harry looked at his friend. Hermione believed Professor Trelawney was a fake, and for that reason, she's grown to hate Divination class. The only reason she was still even taking the course was because it was required for graduation.

Ron, Harry's other best friend, was sitting next to him. "Yeah, like he even has a love life," he snorted. The class sniggered even louder at this.

"Ah, but he will very soon indeed!" spoke up Professor Trelawney. Then she turned to look at Ron. "And I see that the girl you love is in love with someone else..."

Ron's cheeks grew bright red. Ron was in love with Hermione; everybody knew that - except for Hermione. For the past year, Hermione had been dating a young Bulgarian wizard of eighteen called Viktor Krum. Like Harry, Viktor was famous. But unlike Harry, Viktor was famous for a wizard sport he played - Quidditch. Viktor was the captain of the international Bulgarian Quidditch team. He played Seeker, the same position Harry played on his school's house team. Ron recently joined Gryffindor's Quidditch team as Keeper. Funny thing was, Viktor was Ron's idol. He was inspired by Viktor and yet Viktor was dating the girl of his dreams.

Hermione and Viktor met during the trio's fourth year when the international Triwizard Tournament was held at Hogwarts. Three wizard schools joined together, selected a champion from each school, and the champions competed in three different magical, dangerous tasks. The winner received ten thousand Galleons (wizard money), and a huge gold trophy. Viktor had been chosen as the champion for his school known as Durmstrang. Hogwarts had two champions - Cedric Diggory and Harry himself, after the Goblet of Fire (which chose the champions), unexpectedly chose Harry too, even though he was not legally eligible to participate because you had to be seventeen to enter, and Harry was only fourteen at the time. Viktor had asked Hermione to be his date for the Yule Ball (a dance especially made for the Triwizard Tournament, where the champions had to lead everyone into), and the rest was history.

But Ron had been right - Harry had absolutely no love life, well, unless you counted the countless dreams he had of a seventh-year Ravenclaw, by the name of Cho Chang. Harry had wanted to ask Cho to the Yule Ball - even went for it and asked. But Cho turned him down because appearantly she was going with the other Hogwarts champion, Cedric Diggory, who was a Hufflepuff. It also turned out that Cho and Cedric were dating - up until Cedric's tragic death, of course. That happened during the Triwizard Tournament's final task. Harry would never forget it because he was there when Cedric was murdered. Cedric had been murdered by the evil, fearsome Dark Lord Voldemort.

Voldemort was the reason Harry became famous. He was the only wizard in the world to ever survive the instant death spell - Avada Kedavra. When Harry was just a baby, Voldemort's evil power was at its peek. He had a dozen loyal followers who called themselves the Death Eaters. No one could stand up to Voldemort or the Death Eaters. Voldemort and his Death Eaters had already murdered dozens of witches and wizards - even Muggles - before Voldemort arrived at the Potters' house one night. Voldemort ended up murdering Harry's mother and father, but for some strange reason, when he tried the death spell on Harry, the spell backfired and Voldemort lost most of his powers. He fled the house leaving baby Harry harmless. Harry was only left with a strange, lightening bolt scar in the center of his forehead. After that, every witch and wizard in the world knew Harry's name and face. Most recognized him for his scar. They called him The-Boy-Who-Lived.

Of course, Harry didn't realize he was famous or even a wizard up until his eleventh year, when he received an acceptance letter to Hogwarts. Before then, he was taken to live with his only relatives, his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia Dursley. They had a son called Dudley, who was about Harry's age. Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia despised anything that was out of the ordinary, and they both agreed magic was one of them. So of course they despised Harry. They knew who - or as they would put it, what - he was, and treated him like dirt for it.

It was the sound of snapping fingers that woke Harry up from his daydreams. Ron was right in front of his face, snapping his fingers to get Harry's attention. "Hey, Harry - class is over."

"Wh - what it is?" Harry exclaimed, blinking his eyes.

Ron nodded. "Blimey, Harry. I didn't realize how long it takes you to wake up." He winked at Harry, who still looked a little bewiltered. "C'mon, let's go join Hermione - she's been waiting outside."

Harry slowly stood up out of his chair - his legs were asleep, so they stung for a bit and he had a hard time walking.

"Did you hurt yourself there, Harry?" Ron asked, noticing Harry's limping.

Harry shook his head. "No, I'm fine. It's just my legs are asleep. Probably from sitting in that same position for so long."

Ron nodded. "Yeah, I bloody hate it when that happens."

Hermione was waiting impatiently for them outside the Divination classroom. "Finally!" she said when she saw them. "We are going to be late for Defense of the Dark Arts."

"You have Harry to thank," Ron retorted at her. Hermione scowled. Harry shook his head sadly. Sometimes, Ron and Hermione got into so many arguments that he didn't even understand how Ron could be in love with her. Ron and Hermione were completely different people: Hermione was one of the most intelligent students at school. She was a prefect, and enjoyed letting others know of that fact. Hermione spent much of her time in the school library, and Harry figured she had probably read Hogwarts, A History over one hundred times by now. She was more concerned about not breaking school rules than anything else. As for looks, Hermione had dark brown eyes, long, bushy brown hair, and large front teeth.

Ron, on the other hand, was very tall and slim, with a long nose, blue eyes, lots of freckles on his face, and flaming red hair like the rest of the Weasley family. Ron had a tendacy to break rules, and he didn't mind doing so as much as Hermione did. Ron cared mostly about sweets, Quidditch, and cute girls. He rarely spent any time in the library, and wasn't all that bright when it came to his classes. He did a lot of things without thinking about the outcome, and that usually got him into trouble. Even so, Ron had still managed to become a prefect. Harry doubted though, that Ron would become Head Boy. That was more of a Hermione thing, to become Head Girl.

The trio bounded down the Astronomy Tower stairs and all the way down to the first floor - where Defense of the Dark Arts took place. Defense of the Dark Arts was Harry's favorite class, but for some reason, Hogwarts never seemed to be able to keep a Defense teacher for more than a year. This year, the class was being taught by Fleur Delacour, a witch from France's school of Beauxbatons, the third school that competed in the Triwizard Tournament. In fact, Fleur herself had been chosen as the champion for her school.

"Ah, Defense of the Dark Arts - now here's something we can all enjoy," Ron announced blissfully. Harry knew the only reason why Ron liked Defense class this year so much was because of Professor Delacour. She was a beauty, no doubt about it, but only because she was a half veela.

Hermione rolled her eyes again at this. Harry just grinned - he could tell Hermione liked Ron, it was so obvious. Hermione just didn't want to admit it for some reason. Maybe she was still stuck on Krum.

When they entered the classroom, however, Professor Delacour was no where in sight. In fact, the classroom was pretty much empty, even though they were late. "Oh, no!" gasped Hermione. "Did they go off somewhere else in the castle already?"

"No, class got cancelled today," a voice behind them said. The three turned around to see their friend and fellow Gryffindor student, Neville Longbottom.

"Wh- what?" stammered Hermione. "Class can't get cancelled! Whatever for?"

Neville shrugged. "Professor Delacour is ill," he replied. "I guess perhaps Professor Dumbledore forgot to tell you? She's in the hospital wing and has been there all day. And you can guess what that means - a free period!" With that, Neville turned and left the room.

"Wow," Ron murmured. "This is great...no class!" He gave a giant whoop.

Hermione looked upset by this, but she sighed and said, "Well I guess this gives me time to go to the library and read." She trotted off to the library, leaving Harry and Ron behind in the empty room.

Ron turned to Harry. "So - what do you want to do? We can play Wizard Chess or practice Quidditch moves."

Harry shook his head. "Nah...I think I'll go to bed. I'm a bit tired actually." He yawned.

Ron stared at him. "You're tired already? Blimey, it's only the middle of the day!"

Harry nodded. "Yeah, I know. It's just that I didn't get enough sleep last night so now would be a perfect time to catch up. See you."

"Okay, suit yourself."

Harry left Ron to head up to the Gryffindor dormitory. He was the only one there, as most students were still in classes. Harry didn't even bother to take off his school robes and put on his pajamas. He just went inside the sixth year boys' room, fell onto his bed, and was soon fast asleep, dreaming about Cho Chang falling in love with him.
