After a battle when the smoke rises, survivors look about them with gratitude and grief and find some way of coping. Some find forgetfulness in the arms of a lover, some oblivion in the comforting depths of a bottle but there are alternatives. From the heart of the battlefield rises a heart-broken howl and a black dog with foam flecked jaws streaks away.
