Chapter three-The Test.

I couldn't move. The flat line still went right across the heart monitor screen. The doctors continued to defibrillate Harry. I jumped every time Harry's body did when they put the iron shaped paddles against his chest. Tears began forming.

"Ron, take Lauren outzide," whispered Fleur.

Ron nodded and took Lauren's hand. They went out of the room.

Fleur came over to me and wrapped her arm around my shoulder.

Then, the flat line vanished and a faint heartbeat rhythm began moving across the screen.

"OK good. Get him stable," said the doctor anxiously.

I grabbed a hold of Fleur's arm.

After a few moments, the doctor came over to me.

"How is he?" I asked, swallowing a large lump of tears.

"Stable. We almost lost him. I went over his CATSCANs. There is slight head trauma. He's in coma right now," said the doctor quietly.

"Will he come out?" asked Fleur, her voice breaking.

"It's possible. We just aren't sure right now. Time is going to be the key," said the doctor as he gently put a hand on my shoulder before he left.

I went over to where Ron had been sitting and plopped down in the seat. I leaned forward slightly and buried my face into my hands.

I began sobbing again.

"I can't loose him, Fleur. I can't," I sobbed.

"He will be juzt fine, Hermione. He ez a fighter," said Fleur softly.

I lowered my hands from my face and looked up at her.

"I can't fall apart for Lauren. I've got to be strong for her,"

"You're only human. There ez no way anybody can be zat strong," said Fleur gently. "Lauren ez smart. She'll know what ez going on."

"We've just got to keep our faith, honey," said my mother softly as she came over and sat next to me, wrapping her arm around my shoulder.

"Fleur is right. He is a fighter," said my father kindly and gently.

I looked over at Harry's motionless form on the bed. His chest was rising and falling in rhythm.

I got up and went over to the bed. I stood beside it and ran my hand through his jet-black hair.

"Please wake up," I said quietly as tears streamed down my cheeks. "We need you, Harry. We can't stand the thought of loosing you. We love you. I love you."

Just then, Ron and Lauren entered the room.

Lauren rushed right over to me and threw her arms around my waist, pressing her face against my stomach. Ron went over to the bed.

"Harry, you'd better not die on us, mate. We've been through a lot, you, Hermione and I, plus our friendship's gotten a lot tighter as a result. I don't think you're going to find three closer friends than us. You're just not going to find it anywhere. Just because we're not in Hogwarts anymore, doesn't mean we don't need you. You keep us together, 'Arry. Lauren needs you most of all," said Ron, choking back a lump of tears.

We all fell silent.

Fred and George stopped by a few days later. They entertained Lauren by eating their famous Canary Creams and spontaneously bursting into a yellow canary. Lauren giggled each time they molted. Then, Percy stopped by.

"Hermione, I am so sorry. How is he doing?" asked Percy worriedly as he rushed into the room and handed Lauren a stuffed rabbit before coming over to me. He went to hug me, but I pushed him away.

My anger was no longer vented again. Suddenly, I was angry with him. I exploded.

"HOW IS HE DOING? IF YOU HADN'T CALLED HIM HE WOULDN'T'VE GOTTEN HIT!" I shouted angrily.

Percy looked abashed and upset.

"Hermione, it's not my fault...it's nobody's. It was just an accident," said Percy softly and gently.

"Oh no, it's your fault! If he dies, Percy, so help me..." I snarled pulling out my wand.

But then, I stopped.

This wasn't me. What was I doing? I turned my wand onto my own daughter and now Percy.

I put my wand away in my pocket.

"Oh Percy. I am so sorry," I apologized quietly.

"It's OK, Hermione," said Percy gently.

I exhaled loudly and plopped back down in the seat. I ran a hand through my bushy dark brown hair. Lauren climbed up onto the seat next to me.

"I just want him to be OK," I whispered.

"He will. We've just got to have faith," said Ron sitting next to me.

"Ron's right. We've been through a lot. Harry will pull through," said Ginny.

I looked up. I had completely forgotten she was there.

"Oh, Ginny. I am so sorry. I totally forgot you were there. I'm so sorry," I apologized softly as I shook my head.

"It's OK," said Ginny.

I looked down at Lauren.

"Mum," said Lauren quietly.

"Listen, you two. You need some sleep. Why don't you take a rest?" asked Percy.

"Yeah. That sounds great," I sighed.

I stood up. There was a small couch on the other side of the room that I also totally didn't realize was there. I went over to it and sat down. It was soft. I leaned back and Lauren curled up beside me, her head resting on my chest. Pretty soon, we were out cold.

The next morning, I awoke to someone shaking me urgently. My eyes snapped open. It was Mum.

"What? What's wrong?" I demanded urgently.

"The doctor would like to speak to you," said Mum gently and quietly.

Lauren was still out cold. I easily laid her head down on the couch and stood up. The doctor was standing outside the room, holding a clipboard.

I went over to him.

"Yes, doctor?" I asked.

"Mrs. Potter? Your husband will have to go for another CATSCAN later today. We need to check if the damage hasn't gotten worse," said the doctor softly.

"Will he pull through?" I asked in a small voice.

"We just don't know. I'm sorry," said the doctor remorsefully.

He began heading down the corridor.

I turned around and faced Ron, Ginny, Mum and Dad.

"What did the doctor say, Hermione?" asked Ron worriedly.

His eyes were dark, puffy and blood shot. He looked like he hasn't slept in days.

"Harry has to go for another CATSCAN later today. The doctor just doesn't know if he'll pull through. It's more like knowing that you're standing in front of a bomb, but not knowing if it will detonate," I said.

I went over to Harry's motionless form and ran my hands through his jet-black hair again.

"Please pull through," I pleaded as I laid my head down on his chest, just listening to his heart beating and his breathing. I shut my eyes and felt tears threatening the corners of my eyes.
