A Very Weird Day

It was a very weird day in Liverpool, England. At first glance it seemed normal enough, clear blue skies, bright sunny day. Then you saw it once more and there was something entirely different. Yeah sure there was a cloudless sky, but every house was in total darkness except for a small flickering street lamp. The way this came to be all started when a little boy named Sirius found his father’s wand.

Little Sirius was running through his giant three-story house, practically begging to get into trouble. He had dark blue eyes that glowed with mischief and black, shaggy hair that fell boyishly around his ears. The Black family was a well-known wizarding family, famous for their mischievous nature. Sirius Black was just another perfect example. He was known to ride his speeding broom and throw dung bombs with a long lasting smell. Even for an 8-year-old, Black was a handful. So, it was only natural that as he was recklessly running down the halls, he bumped into his father and knocked him down rather uncomfortably.

"Sirius! Don’t run in the house! If you want to do something, think of some pranks to pull on that Severus Snape kid or something," his father huffed. John Black picked up his rowdy son and left to go about his business. Sirius was about to leave, too, when he noticed a thin cylindrical object near the old antique rug. Undoubtedly he scooped it up, and how glad he was! The mysterious object turned out to be his father’s 11 inch, holly and unicorn hair wand. Now, he was going to have fun.

"Now, who can help me with this?" his little face lit up with an evil grin, "I know! James!" he mused. He quickly rushed out the huge oak doors and down the street where his best friend, James Potter, lived. James was eight, and had a similar personality to Sirius’ own classic one.  He sported a head of untidy black hair, and stunning brown eyes. James was out in his front in his front yard playing with his broom when Sirius ran up.

"James! You’ll never guess what I found! My father dropped his wand, and now I’ve got it. We can do a whole bunch of things with this," Sirius showed James the wand, and James grinned devilishly.

"Did your mum see you?" James asked.

"No, she’s at Aunt Minnie’s. Dad did not even notice it was gone!"

"Good. Now what do you want to do?" James peered at the wand and examined it closely.

"I dunno, just try out some spells I suppose," Sirius said. They spent a long while thinking up spells, and trying to imitate the ones they’d seen. They failed every time until, a couple hours later, one miraculously worked.

"Lightenous Darkenus!" Sirius yelled, and flicked the wand around. For a moment nothing happened, then one-by-one the houses went black until the whole neighborhood was covered in a sheet of blackness. The street light flickered to life just as people began to investigate the eerie blackness. Sirius and James stood there like deer caught in headlights. Slowly an identical grin grew across their faces.

"Yes! It worked! I am such a genius!" Sirius yelled, dancing a little jig. Suddenly James paled and tugged on Sirius’ sleeve.

"Um…Sirius? Isn’t that your dad? Why does he look so red?" he asked in a tiny quavering voice.

"Uh-oh. Come on, RUN!" the two little boys ran as if their life depended on it, which most likely did, and headed for James’ house. They ran inside his quaint little house, and into his average bedroom. They proceeded to hide out until morning, even though it meant no dinner.

When they ventured forth the next morning, the storm had blown over and everything was back to normal. Well, as normal as it can get with Sirius and James that is.
