The Great Prank

It was the evening of April Fools day and James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew were all sat in the Gryffindor common room.

"I'm bored," said Sirius, staring at the fire which was still burning away in the grate.

"I know!" said James, suddenly. "Let's pull an April Fool's prank on Snape!"

"It's a good idea, but what are we going to do it with? We have no supplies, we used them up last Thursday in Potions," said Remus. Peter was being very quiet, not sure what he could do but very eager to join in.

"I'll go and look in my trunk upstairs and see what I can find!" squeaked Peter.

"Umm... OK then..." Sirius looked doubtful as Peter disappeared up the stairs. "Does anyone else have anything?"

"Well, I have some post-it parchment," said Remus, "but I doubt that we'll be able to do anything with that."

"I have a jar of peanut butter here somewhere," said James, rummaging in his pocket. "Ah, here it is. Hmm...."

"Can I try a bit?" asked Sirius, "I haven't had that stuff for years!"

"Does this look edible to you? It's got green fluff growing on it!"

"Hmmm... maybe I won't try some then..."

At this point Peter came hurrying down the stairs.

"Look what I found!" he exclaimed, running down the stairs with what looked like a pair of stripy flip-flops and some old bobble hats. "We could use these for something!"

"Hmm, what could we use this lot for?" said James, indicating the post-it notes, peanut butter, flip-flops and bobble hats. "Remembering that we have our trusty map of course."

"Well, we could bewitch the post-it parchment to attack him, then bewitch the flip-flop's to catapult peanut butter at him, and I'm not sure what we could use the bobble hats for..." said Remus, who was supposed to be a prefect.

"Yes, I'm having trouble with the hats too... we should scrap it," said Sirius, thoughtfully. "Sorry Wormtail, it was a good idea though."

"That idea's good Moony, but it needs more... well... more 'umph', if you see what I mean," replied James. "Any more ideas?"

Each one of them looked thoughtful for a moment. Then suddenly Sirius exclaimed:

"I've got it! We send a post-it parchment to Snape, saying that Lily wants to meet him in that empty classroom on the fourth floor, 'coz we all know he fancies her." The others nodded. Sirius continued, "Then when he realises that she's not coming, he'll turn around, only to find that the door's been locked. So he'll turn around again, to go and sit at an empty desk. We'll be hidden in the cupboard. He'll sit down and activate the charm that sets off the flip-flops smeared with peanut butter, which will attack him. Then we'll charm the bobble hats (that will have been filled with more peanut butter) to go and put themselves on his head, one by one. This way, he will end up covered in peanut butter and EXTREMELY annoyed!"

"Genius! Sheer genius!" exclaimed Peter.

"Hogwarts has never seen anything like this in all its days!" said Remus.

"Well done Padfoot!" said James, slapping him on the back. "An excellent idea! Wormtail, will you go and send the note? Make it say 'Severus, meet me in the empty classroom on the fourth floor at 10:00pm, Lily x', I think he'll fall for that."

"...10:00pm, Lily x. Right, got it!" said Peter and rushed out to send the message.

"Do you think he'll get it right?"

"I hope so..."

Severus Snape was sat in the Slytherin common room, alone, when he heard a tap at the window. He looked up and was very surprised to see an owl carrying a post-it parchment. Since when did anyone send mail on a post-it parchment? He opened the window to let the owl in and was very surprised to find that it was addressed to him.

'Severus,
Meet me in the in the empty classroom on the fourth floor at 10:00pm,
Lily x'

Severus almost fainted with shock after he read this. The girl of his dreams asking to meet him, him, alone in an empty classroom. He smiled at the thought and sat down to wait for 10:00 to arrive.

The Marauders were on their way to the classroom to set up their prank. They had practised the charms they would need on Nearly Headless Nick, the Gryffindor house ghost, much to their amusement. James silently pushed open the door to check if there were any stray ghosts in there, or, even worse, Peeves. There weren't, so he beckoned for the others to follow him in.

"Right, so Wormtail and Moony start filling the hats with peanut butter, and Padfoot and I will cast the charm and smear the flip-flops with the peanut butter."

They all set to work, as they only had twenty minutes to set up the greatest prank in Hogwarts history. It only took a few minutes for everyone to finish, and, with the flip-flops and hats floating safely up in the corner of the ceiling and the peanut butter back in James's pocket, the Marauders clambered into the cupboard to await Severus's arrival.

~~~
Severus was wandering along to the fourth floor when he suddenly felt very cold. It took him a few seconds to realise that he had managed to walk through the Bloody Baron.
"Oy! Watch where you're going!"
"Oh... I'm ever so sorry Sir, I didn't see you," Severus stammered nervously. "Please don't tell Mr. Filch that I was out of bed!"
"Well... all right... seeing as I'm your house ghost," mumbled the Baron.
"Thank-you ever so much sir!"
Severus continued to walk down the corridor. He spotted the Fat Friar floating towards him, and ducked behind a tapestry. "What is it with these ghosts tonight?" he thought to himself as he emerged form his hiding place. He made it to the fourth floor without seeing another being, dead or alive. He opened the door to the classroom and slipped inside.
He waited for twenty minutes and finally decided that she wasn't coming. Wait a minute...he realised, today's April Fools! I've been tricked! I bet it was the 'Marauders'... Severus glanced around the room and noticed two flip-flops and several bobble hats floating in a corner of the room. He walked over to the door and tried to open it, only to discover that it was locked. He smiled to himself, muttered something under his breath, opened the now unlocked door and walked out of the room.
James, Sirius, Remus and Peter waited until they heard his footsteps fade, then, when they were sure that he wouldn't hear them, they all tumbled out of the cupboard.
"How did he know he was being pranked?"
"How did he know how to open the door?"
"I bet he's gone to get teachers!"
"Quick! Let's get everything down and get back to the common room!"
Everyone quickly busied themselves removing all enchantments and evidence from the room, but it wasn't quick enough. As they were escaping from the room they bumped into Professors Dumbledore, Flitwick and McGonagall. Oh crap, thought James as he caught sight of Severus's sly grin.
"And just WHAT do you think you're doing at this time of night?" asked Professor McGonagall in a somewhat menacing tone.
"Well... umm... it's like this..." James stammered.
"You've been playing tricks on Mr Snape here, haven't you?" Professor Flitwick asked them.
"Well, to tell you the truth, yes we have," admitted Sirius.
"And a very good trick it was too!" Professor Dumbledore congratulated them, chuckling to himself as he did so. Flitwick and McGonagall glared at him. "Ah... I mean... you shouldn't be up this late... and... um... it was a very wrong thing to do... very wrong indeed...." Dumbledore corrected himself.
"And as a punishment, all 5 of you will receive detention," McGonagall said sternly. The smile faded from Severus's face.
"All... 5 of us?"
"Yes, Mr Snape, you too will receive detention as you were also out of bed after hours. Now back to bed, ALL of you."
Sirius and James walked away, grinning.
"Well now, that didn't go quite as you planned, did it?" whispered James.
"No, but it worked out alright in the end, even though we got detention!" replied Sirius, and they both wandered back to Gryffindor tower, to their beds and to their dreams about how next to torture Severus Snape.
