Accepting All Letters

Years went by, the girls still as close as ever. That was until Lily's eleventh birthday.

Her birthday started out like any other. The family gathered at the table eating cake. The mail must have just come, new envelopes had been pushed through the mail slot. Lily ran and got the mail. She came back in a minute later, clutching a letter in her hand.

"Mummy, I've got mail!" she exclaimed.

Paul and Daisy looked over at what the girl was holding. Paul gasped, and the two looked at each other.

"Sweetie, can I please see that letter?" Daisy asked her daughter.

Lily handed the letter over to her mother. Daisy stared at the envelope. She turned it over. A Hogwarts Seal. Tears filled up in Daisy's eyes.

"What's wrong, mummy?" Lily asked her mother, noticing the tears.

"Nothing's wrong, dear. Mummy's just very happy. Very happy indeed." Daisy ran over and gave her husband a quick embrace and kiss.

"If nothing's wrong then why are you crying?" Petunia questioned.

Daisy handed Lily back her letter. "Sweetie, open your letter."

Lily took the letter from her mothers shaking hand. Slowly she opened it, not quite sure what was really going on. She started to read.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore

(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorcerer, Chief Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confederation Of Wizards)

Dear Miss Evans,

We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equiment.

Term begins of 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.

Lily paused. What was all this? She looked up at her parents, both giving her very eager looks. "M-mummy, what does this mean? Witchcraft and wizardry?" Petunia's eyes widened.

"I... I didn't think it was possible, Lily dear, so I never told you or your sister about it. I guess this means that you're a witch."

Now Lily's eyes widened. She stared back at her mother. "A witch?"

"That's what I said."

"Your mother and I honestly weren't expecting this..." her father chimed in. "It's really a great shock and surprise to the both of us."

"Ah, I guess I must explain. You listen up too, Petunia. You may very well be on your way to Hogwarts next year yourself then." Petunia glanced at her mother. "You see girls, your father and I both come from wizarding families. But unfortunately, for some reason, neither of us is capable of doing magic. We're what are called 'Squibs.' And we thought that you two girls would both be squibs as well. It's such an amazing thing that you aren't!"

Lily and Petunia stared at their mother. It was at least a full minute before Lily spoke up.

"Wizarding world?"

"Oh yes, dear. It's really a wonderful place. Your Uncles Stephen and Dennis are both wizards, and your grandparents are wizards and witches themselves. Oh, they'll be so proud! Beaming ear to ear like your father and I are! Lily, being a witch is a wonderful thing. It's something to be proud of. Can I see the rest of your letter, please?"

Lily handed her mother the envelope. Daisy fiddled through it, looking over the Hogwarts letter and moving onto the next page.

"Ah, and here's your supplies list! We're going to have to go buy your school supplies. Oh, you'll love Diagon Alley! In fact, why don't we go today? We'll take a trip into London, how about that?"

And they were off.
