Scatterbrained Thoughts on the Wedding Day

Oh, god, Lily. Not the time to cry now, not the time to cry. Look at James, standing there. He's not going to cry.

Poor Lily. Look, she's got tears in her eyes. Not the time to laugh, James. Not the time. Don't laugh at your bride to be on your wedding day.

Lily soon-to-be Potter looked happily up into James' face. He smiled down at her, his eyes alight with his well-concealed laughter. This was their wedding day. Oh, wow. This was their wedding day. Neither James nor Lily had considered the fact that this was it. No more flings (not that Lily had had any flings; that was James' deal) and no more one-night stands (yet again, that was James' deal). James had only now thought about the fact that Lily was his, and he was hers.

"Do you, Lily, take James to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

Lily paused. Ohmygod, ohmygod. This is going to be the last man I will ever be with. Can I live with him? Can I marry him? I don't know. I don't know. Somebody please answer for me. Come on people! Answer for me! I can't say anything. Oh my god, he's so handsome. Why did he ever choose me? I don't deserve him. He's not having second thoughts. I know he's not. They're all staring at me. What am I waiting for? What if James IS having second thoughts??? Oh my god, he's not going to marry me. Oh, god, this is embarrassing. Please! Someone make this easier!

James squeezed Lily's hand as she paused, smiling at her. Lily nearly choked.

"I-I do," she stuttered finally. The guests let out their breaths as one. They had all been waiting for her answer.

"And do you, James, take Lily to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

James grinned down into the face of his blushing bride.

She's so worried. I bet she thinks I don't want to marry her. I should pause like she did and let her wait for a while. Oh wait, I am pausing. Oh, crap! I'm having second thoughts aren't I?! Wait what if I DON'T want to marry her. Of course, I want to marry her, but...I do. I do. Come on James! I want to marry her! I've been dating this girl for three years, and I can't say two words? God, I am stupid. No wonder she paused. I can't blame her. Why did she even pick me? I don't deserve her. No man could deserve such a loving woman as Lily. Oh my god, if I say yes, I'll be the luckiest man in the world. I want that. I want that. Yes. I do. I do!

"I do," James said at last. Lily exhaled gladly. This was it. They were going to be married. Oh wow. They were going to be married. They were going to be husband and wife: Mr. Potter and Mrs. Potter. They exchanged rings.

"Then I now pronounce you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride."

James paused again. He glanced at the crowd of people sitting on the benches. This church, it was so big! Why had he agreed to do this here? Why not outside?

"James?" Lily whispered. He turned his gaze back to her and reddened. James lifted Lily's veil and their lips met. They kissed, and were finally able to ignore the people around them.

Oh god, this feels so right, Lily thought as she felt James' lips on hers.

Oh, I've been waiting so long for this feeling. This was how everything had meant to be. How could I have wanted anything else? How could I have lived without this, without her?

They stopped kissing, and the crowd stood, laughing and yelling and being all-around too loud for a church. No one cared about this though. There was only laughter and merriment all around. Who cared if they all knew better than to yell in a church?

"May I present; Mr. and Mrs. James Potter!" The guests' noise increased even more, and they swarmed to the bride and groom.

"Thanks, Albus," Lily said to the minister, Albus Dumbledore.

"It was my pleasure," and he disappeared into the crowd.

Sirius Black came to stand by his best friend, patting James on the back and laughing. Peter Pettigrew came forward, raising an old-looking camera.

"Say Amnigibigie!" Peter cried.

Sirius, Lily, and James all attempted to say 'amnigibigie', but failed miserably and burst out laughing. Peter pressed on the camera's button, and there was a click. He slung the camera-bag over his shoulder, and came to stand next to the joking friends. Remus Lupin came up, laughing too.

He gave Lily a hug, saying, "You were magnificent." James made an indignant noise, and glared at Remus. It was all a joke, though.

"You were okay, too," Remus said. They all laughed again, and James swept Lily off her feet, into his arms. He held her in his arms and gave her a kiss.

"Now, that wasn't as big of a disaster as it could've been, was it?" he asked her, as their friends went to talk with some of the other guests.

"I suppose not," she answered, giggling, "but we could always spoil something else, couldn't we? I mean, there is our honeymoon, after all."

James chuckled and set her on her feet.

Yes, there is our honeymoon to look forward to. Hawaii here we come!

They both looked into each other's eyes. Neither of them would forget this moment. Not for the rest of their lives.

And so, they went to find their friends, thinking not of the future, but of the present...
