Whilst Faeries Dance

Chapter One: Faeries

Deep in the ancient forest,

Where the flowers bloom,

Like bright colored stars,

And the fern grows like a winding road,

Where the raindrops fall,

On the soft mossy grass,

And the trees whisper,

The secrets of the past,

This is where I shall go.

To this sacred place of wonder,

In the wild green wood,

Secret to any mortal,

To see the faeries,

In all their splendor

Painfully beautiful,

While they dance,

To their eerie piping tunes,

Under the blue midsummer moon,

As I lay there,

An outsider yearning to join,

To behold but become not baleful,

For I shall never be received,

Here will I lie, in deathlike sleep,

Unbeknownst to all,

In the green woods,

Whilst faeries dance upon my grave,

Forevermore.

Draco Malfoy looked around and smirked. He was outside in Care of Magical Creatures class, with the rest of the fifth year Slytherins and Gryffindors. His new Prefect badge sparkled brightly in the sun. He hadn't really been paying attention until Hagrid told them their magical creature study of the semester; faeries.

"Oh, faeries!" Pansy shrieked. Her pug like face lit up with excitement, and her hate for Hagrid and Care of Magical creatures class had been easily forgotten.

"Now before yeh git all exited, yer all going ter listen' ter me," Hagrid barked, the severity in his voice shut them all up. "Faeries are not ter be takin' lightly'. They’re very dangerous. Can anyone of yer tell me why?" Hermione's hand shot up like a cork.

"Faeries are generally divided into two courts; the Seelie and the Unseelie, the Good and Bad courts, or the Solitary and Gathered Faye. Each court has a King, Queen or both. They have many offspring, but only one girl and boy are chosen for a special honor. Every two hundred years it is time for the old faerie King and Faerie Queen of both courts to retire and leave the kingdom. When this time comes the chosen boy becomes the Faerie King of the court, and his sister is traded to the other court to become their Queen." Hermione finished in a huff sounding as usual, as though she swallowed a textbook.

"Very good 'Ermione!" Hagrid said, beaming at her. "Does anyone know anything else?" Hagrid asked. To Draco's surprise Pansy put her hand up, "Parkinson," Hagrid grunted.

Some of the Gryffindors started snickering; Draco shot them a look or warning. Crabbe and Goyle cracked their knuckles menacingly.

Pansy wrinkled her face, "Well I don't know very much, only what I read in Daddy's library," she took a deep breath and touched her new Prefect badge, as if to reassure herself. Pansy started again, "the Seelie court is the good one according to the books, and the Unseelie is the bad one. The Seelie have these faeries called Vaetter Maidens or the Queens Own. Their job is to protect the royal family. It's said that they're ferocious in battle and are often said to be the "Amazons" of the faerie." Pansy took another breath and continued, "The Unseelie however, have their own knights in shining armor, or so to speak."

By now Draco was very amused. Pansy is really getting into this he thought.

Pansy went on, "they are called The Sluagh. It is said that they are very violent and follow their master; the King of the Unseelie fearlessly, with perfect obedience." This time Draco snickered out loud, these slugs or whatever Pansy called them, reminded him of his father Lucius, and his never ending crusade to please "The Powerful Lord Voldemort" (as he heard shouted in his house many a time).

"Yer all right' so let's see'...ten points fer Gryffindor, an' take ten points fer Slytherin," Hagrid said. "Today' were' gonna' go into' the forest, and see if we can er' spot any faeries, yer NOT te make any kinda contact with ’em!" he barked. "If yer get inta trouble, jus' send up red sparks from yer wand'." Babble broke out amongst the crowd, as Draco sat up straighter. "So yer gonna' get yerselves in groups of two' an' well' go from there'." Hagrid yelled over the crowd of exited students.

Pansy grabbed Draco's arm, "Oh, Drake come with me! We'll find lot's of faeries! After all we are both prefects" She giggled. Draco nodded at her slightly annoyed; he looked over to see who everyone else was partnering up with. He could see Potter and Weasley together as usual, Draco wondered if they were secretly shagging, he shuddered, what a disgusting thought. He shook his head in disgust and got up. The blond boy brushed some grass off his uniform; he had to maintain the perfect image of a Malfoy, after all. The students began moving towards Hagrid. Draco noticed something particularly funny; Longbottom and Granger were working together! He grabbed a dubious looking Pansy by the arm and swaggered towards Granger and the dumbstruck-looking boy.

"Well, well," Draco said as soon as they were within hearing distance, "if it isn't the mudblood working with Longbottom, what happened to Potty and the Weasel? Too busy shagging to notice you I suppose," he drawled. Pansy tittered. He could see the girl fighting to keep her anger in check.

"Malfoy I suppose you wouldn't understand because you don't have any friends," she sputtered. He took a menacing step towards her. His face twisted into a cruel smile.

"Don't talk about things you don't understand, you filthy little Mudblood." he snapped registering the shock and fury on the Muggleborn's face. Serves her right for being a know it all, he thought. Draco grabbed Pansy's arm and walked towards the forest with the rest of the class. He tried to block out the girl's increasingly annoying babble by thinking of all the new ways to torture Potty, and his stupid friends. The class reached the forest and began splitting up. Draco and Pansy took a route to the left.

Fifteen minutes later.......

"Drake, we haven't found anything yet," Pansy whined.

"That's because you're breathing too loudly Pansy," Draco answered in a bored tone of voice.

"I am not!" Pansy fumed. They continued on deeper into the forest, the fern and undergrowth had become darker and thicker. He wondered if they were lost, when suddenly they reached a gap in the dense forest. Inside was a beautiful little clearing. Flowers of all kinds were growing everywhere, although not a ray of sunlight could be seen through the thick foliage of the trees. A mist shrouded the gap making it all the more mysterious.

"Draco, I think that were in a faerie clearing," the girl said, her mouth hanging open.

"Yes Pansy, I do believe we've established tha..." He stopped short. Draco had just enough time to throw himself and Pansy behind a huge oak tree. Pansy opened her mouth to protest but the blond boy clamped his hand on it, for suddenly there amongst the trees stood two very distressed looking faeries. They were holding up a third who had what looked like an iron arrow sticking out of her side, with silver blood dripping from the wound. Her lovely face was contorted with pain as she tried unsuccessfully to stand on her own.
