The Sin We Share

Look at him James. He’s weak, inept and a coward. Do really think Voldemort is going to go after him when he would have some one with talent, strength and courage?

You said it so casually, pointing your dirty finger at me while I sat in the corner. And what do I do? I scowl a little, and mutter something under my breath. Inside though, inside I’m laughing. I’m laughing at how very stupid you’re going to look. I almost laugh out loud, thinking about it. But, of course, you’re right. Nobody will ever suspect me, that’s why this is so perfect.

James, I’m telling you to use him instead!

That’s it, just keep digging Sirius. Dig James and Lily’s graves first and then your own. I still sit in the corner, listening to the argument. Remus drops by. You suspect him of being a spy, you’re looking in the wrong direction. You both speak so shortly to each other, to think that you were once such good friends. But you think you have him pegged, the werewolf, the obvious traitor. You’ve always been thick in that respect, pointing out the obvious. You say something sympathetic to him anyway, you know he’s lost a lot already. Remus isn’t too bright either. None of you are. You all sit in your delusions that we’re all so trust worthy. Well, I supposed that you and Remus don’t. But you’re missing the truth. The only one who ever saw the truth is gone, and Remus is the only one who cares. Good riddance if you ask me, which you don’t. You never ask me.

The Potters are gone...

You don’t see me nestled in the wreckage, but I see you. You stand in the middle of the mess, crying. You keep asking yourself why you let this happen, calling out to James for forgiveness. There is no forgiveness for you and I, we’re both damned. You for trusting and me for betraying. It’s a burden that we’ll both carry forever. But if you’re lucky, you won’t have it for very long. I sneak away. I know what I have to do.

I trusted you! You betrayed us!

You stand in front of me, blocking my only obvious escape. I stare at you for a moment, I have to make sure there are witnesses you know. You’re shaking with rage. You’re holding your wand so tightly that your knuckles are white. You’re crying. I’m crying too, but for a completely different reason. I’m terrified. I didn’t plan on any of this happening. I wasn’t supposed to be on the losing side. It can’t be helped now I suppose. I have to do what I have to do or I’m going to be in a bigger fix than this.

James and Lily! How could you!

You look flabbergasted. You know the truth, and I know the truth, but nobody else does. Nobody else will. I’m going to make sure of that. I draw my wand. You don’t suspect what I’m about to do. You think you’re going to kill me and get revenge. How very wrong you are. The next moment are a blur to me. I have tricks up my sleeve. The alley is ripped apart. Peoples screams are silenced before they’re heard. The smell of ozone and burned garbage fills the air. I change and drop into the gutter. Don’t worry though, I’ve left you a little something to remember me by. I’ve left you my finger.

Now I sit in the sewer and I listen. You’re laughing like a maniac. You know you’re innocent, and I know you’re innocent, but nobody else knows. You’re not really innocent, of course. You allowed this all to happen. It’s as much your sin as it is mine. They’ve come to take you away and you’re still laughing. You don’t even put up a fight. You just go. They’re taking you to Azkaban, where you’ll rot forever. You’re taking the punishment for me. You always were a good friend.
