Chapter 7: The Changeover
"They told me I should go back tomorrow. They'll give me more instructions then and prepare me to leave..." Harry stated.
"Okay. I don't know how the hell will I explain your absences to school... after all, it's your last year..."
"Just say I had to leave out of the country or something... say I went to live with my dad!" he answered, his face brightening.
"Yah, like that would ever happen," Serena said sarcastically.
"Hey! It could happen...." Harry told her with a mischievous grin. He was glad that after what had happened, he could still joke around with his mom to take his mind of the subject for a while.
Then, the phone rang. Serena answered and then passed the phone to Harry: "It's Robin".
"Fuck! I forgot I had to call Robin to tell her everything!" he said fast. "Hello? Oh, yeah... so how are you...? Hey, I gotta tell you something..." His voice trailed off as he left the room to speak more privately.
Serena smiled to herself and finished folding clothes.
**********
Harry came back to the room after half an hour. Serena had already left. He had told Robin everything but she wouldn't believe it. He had told her he'd take her the next day with him when he went to meet with Dumbledore for more instructions. She seemed hesitant, but Harry didn't care. He wanted Robin to be part of this, he wanted her to understand and believe it.
Harry told his mom about what had happened with Robin.
"That's what you should do, darling. She'll understand when she hears it and sees it from Dumbledore. It's better off this way, so she can realize by seeing it," Serena had told him.
Harry sighed and went to bed.
As he laid there thinking, he couldn't help but feel suddenly as if all that had been happening was just about to sink in. He had been a little dizzy while hearing Dumbledore's explanations, so it wasn't until know that he realized what was happening. Bloody hell!, he thought. This is serious...
That was the last thing Harry thought before he fell deeply asleep, having weird dreams about a young boy chasing after a unicorn.
**********
"Harry! Harry, wake up!" Serena jerked her son strongly. "Oh, Mr. Selwyn, when will you be up on time for once?"
Harry opened his eyes wide. "Sorry. Freaky dreams," he answered sleepily.
"Robin is waiting downstairs. She started asking me all these questions about your mental health and about you inventing weird stories about magic," she said with a smirk.
"Hmm... now she'll have to believe me. I'm taking her to Dumbledore. Could you please tell her to wait while I get dressed?"
"Sure. Make yourself look decent, please," Serena mocked playfully.
"Shut up!" Harry yelped while hurling a pillow against Serena's slim form.
Ten minutes later, Harry climbed down the stairs to find Serena sitting comfortably over a couch.
"See you're planning on staying there for a while, huh?" he whispered into Robin's ear, making her wince and jump almost as if to bump into the ceiling.
"Fuck! You scared me to death, Harry!" she shouted while she turned around. "Anyway, what did you need to tell me that couldn't wait until the afternoon? I'm so tired I could sleep with my eyes open!"
"I'm taking you somewhere. No questions asked. Promise?"
Robin hesitated. "Oh, alright," she finally gave in.
***********
Harry took Robin to 'The Leaky Cauldron', as he had learned to call the destroyed bar in the middle of London. They waited in the backyard in front of a brick wall.
Robin seemed uncomfortable. "Hum.... What are we doing here, Harry?"
"Shush!" Harry quieted her. He needed to be paying attention to Dumbledore's signal. Then, it came. The old man was standing just behind Robin.
"Glad to see you, Harry." Robin got scared to death again and jumped up and down. She quickly turned around to see the very old man that had spoken just a few inches apart from her. "I see you brought a friend. Can I ask why?" he asked with a playful smile.
"She wouldn't believe me. I needed her to understand it by her own. She's my best friend and I want her to be part of this--"
Robin interrupted fast: "Oh, no, Mr. If this is about your ridiculous story of you being a wizard, you don't need to hire people to make me believe it. I won't, ok? I'm not hell crazy like you are. So, if you don't mind, I'll be leaving right now, as this is such a waste of time," Robin finished drawling the words, with a strong tone that reflected pure irony and incredulity.
"I see. Well, Miss... Robin, is it?" Dumbledore proceeded as Harry told him the name. "You will have to come with me".
Then, before Robin had time to protest, Dumbledore magically opened the wall with his wand and entered through the space, leaving a gasping Robin rushing behind him.
Harry chuckled to himself and settled inside the bar for a long, long wait.
**********
About an hour later, Dumbledore and Robin came back to 'The Leaky Cauldron'. But this time, they weren't alone. Arthur Weasley, Sirius Black, Madame Maxime and Minerva McGonagall were coming with them.
"What's up?" Harry asked, kind of worried.
"Ms. McGilley has just been informed about everything you wanted her to know," McGonagall started. "She was very impressed, just like you, but she surprised us all when she volunteered to go with you."
"Pardon me?" said Harry, confident that he had misheard.
"Your friend here wants to go with you, during your mission."
"Hahahah, good joke, Minerva. So why are you all here?"
"You don't understand, Harry, do you? Robin wants to go with you!" Sirius interrupted.
"Ok, stop it. I won't fall for it. Move on, please," Harry told him with a slightly impatient tone.
"Why don't you believe them? I want to go!" Robin said. She looked at him with an earnest expression. That's when Harry believed it.
"What are you talking about, Rob?! I didn't tell you all of this to drag you along, I just wanted you to understand! Of course you can't come, it's too dangerous! Tell her, will you?" Harry turned to Dumbledore.
"We actually told her she had our permission to go as long as you agreed and her tutors agreed," Dumbledore answered calmly.
"I've got no parents," Robin interrupted. "I live in an orphanage. I'm sure they wouldn't even notice if one day I disappeared."
"B-But..." Harry seemed to be looking for a good excuse. "She can't come! She's not a witch! How will she come to Hogwarts if she's not a witch?"
"Well, I had a solution for that," McGonagall stated. "There's a very old ritual called 'The Changeover." It's kind of difficult to perform, but luckily I could perfectly well do it with the help of Madame Maxime here. It's a ritual that, practiced on Muggles, can give them magical powers. Practiced on wizards, it takes the powers off and annuls all magic that the wizard ever performed".
Harry stayed silent for a minute, deep in thought. "You know what? I don't care if you can turn her into a witch: I don't want her to come. This is my mission! I don't want Robin risking her life for it!"
"Harry...." Robin started softly. "Please... let me do this... I want to go with you... I feel it's my destiny... Come on, I know you want to take me with you..." she looked at him with a puppy dog face that Harry just couldn't resist.
Now that he thought of it, having Robin with him would make things much more pleasant. He just didn't want her to be in danger. Finally, after a lot of begging and puppy-dog faces, Harry agreed.
"You shall come back here with all of your things in two hours. Then, we will perform the changeover and let you know the last instructions before you leave. We planned the trip for this afternoon at 4 pm. You should bring your family, Harry, as I'm sure Serena would like to personally say goodbye," Dumbledore told them.
***********
Harry had already told Serena and Daniel about Robin's decision to go through with the changeover. They had been quite shocked, but very supportive. Two hours later, Serena, Daniel, Harry and Robin were entering through the wooden door that led to 'The Leaky Cauldron'.
"Everything packed up?" Serena asked, still with tears in her eyes. It was hard for her to accept that her little baby was now leaving on such an important mission.
"Yup," they answered in unison.
After a few minutes, Dumbledore and his community arrived at the brick wall and guided them again to the wooden mansion that seemed to act as their head-quarters.
The changeover was fast. Nobody could look at it. Maxime and McGonagall took Robin to a deserted room and did everything there.
After about an hour they came back, all of them smiling.
"Successfully administrated," McGonagall sentenced.
