Chapter 5: The 17th Birthday
***********
Seven years later... July 30th, 2047... 23:30
"Mum!!" yelled a handsome sixteen-year-old. No answer. "Muuum!!" the boy yelped again.
"Coming sweetie," answered Serena Selwyn's voice. She quickly ran up the stairs and opened the door to her son's room.
"I was at the kitchen. Don't ask me what was I doing."
"Oh, so it's secret-birthday-party related, huh?"
Serena flushed red in embarrassment and answered with a stern voice: "Have you been spying on me, Harry Michael Selwyn?"
"Of course not! I've just been gladly blessed with more wits than you!" he said with a smirk.
"Don't talk to your mother like that, you ungrateful little sot!" she answered laughing, playing along with him.
It's great to have such a young mom, Harry thought.
Serena Selwyn had got herself a very caring and lovely husband. He was very handsome and wealthy, too.
They had met five years ago, when he went to have a cup of coffee at "The Chicks" and found her so beautiful that immediately asked her out.
His name was Daniel, by the way. Daniel Warman. After three years of dating, they decided to get married. And they had been like that since.
Daniel never tried to play Harry's dad, and he was grateful for it. He had been his role model and friend, but he never tried to replace his absent father.
Now, after two years of marriage, Serena was pregnant again. She had now four months, but was very calmed about it.
Serena kissed her son's forehead and was about to leave the room, when she hesitated at the door and turned back: "You don't know what I'm planning for you tomorrow, right?"
"Oh, no. I'll erase this whole scene from my pure and oblivious mind," Harry drawled back in a sarcastic tone.
Serena smiled and left.
**********
Harry Selwyn was a very handsome young man. He was, what you could call, a total babe. He had jet-black hair and beautiful emerald-green eyes. He had disposed his glasses and now used contact lenses. He had a well built body and was very tall for his age. It seemed as if the little midget he once was had totally faded away.
Girls practically drooled over him. But that was just until they talked to him. Because the truth is, Harry was a very strange boy. He reckoned that himself, but he couldn't quite figure out why.
He had learned to live with it, though. He didn't have much friends, but he had managed to get a few people to like him and love him for what he was inside, like his mom.
Harry plopped himself over his King-sized bed. Daniel had enough money so Serena didn't have to work, and he could even afford a big house with big rooms and king-sized beds.
Harry starred at the ceiling while he thought about his future. He'd be finishing school soon. What would he do with his life? He still hadn't figured out a career that interested him enough. Maybe I should be a lawyer like Daniel, he thought. Well, I still have some more time to think. This was his last thought before he fell deeply asleep.
**********
The next morning, Harry woke up late. He didn't exactly know what time was it. He went down to the kitchen and found no one. He wasn't in the mood for searching, so he started serving himself breakfast.
Glued to the milk box, he found a little note: "Go to 'The Chicks' at 8 pm". So this is it! Harry thought. I have to wait till night for my so-called birthday party and I have to spend my birthday alone!
Just as he thought this, he saw another note pasted to the butter: "And don't be depressed, the lonely day is worth it". Yeah, right... Harry growled to himself.
He spent the whole day reading his new book: 'Ancient Legends of The Past'. It was a very interesting book that contained different legends and stories. He was reading a particular story about a boy with magical powers.
At 7 pm Harry took a shower and got ready. At 7:45 he left to 'the Chicks'. He got there at 8 pm sharp. The door was ajar. He saw a beam of light coming from the inside.
He entered, but instead of finding the party he was hoping for, there was a single candlelight with a note beside: "Follow the arrows". He noticed there was a big poster with an arrow pointing to the basement.
He slowly stepped down the stairs. A single door was closed at the bottom. There was another arrow pointing to that door. Harry opened it and found another candlelight with a note over a table. It read: "Go to 12 Mollohan street". Harry found this very bizarre.
After walking for fifteen minutes, he found the so-called 'Mollohan Street'. He looked for number 12 and. When he was about to knock on the door, he saw another note plastered on the door. It said: " Haha, gotcha! We made you walk around the city in vain! Hehehe, what you have to do now is return home. We just needed a little diversion. PS: Don't be mad".
Harry was surprised he managed to control his temper. He wasn't actually mad. He just started laughing at his own stupidity.
After another long walk, he got home. He opened the door with his key and there it was. It was so worth the long wait. Little people were there, but they were exactly the one thing Harry needed. His mom, Daniel, some friends of his mom, and his only friend from school: Robin McGilley.
She was a very pretty seventeen-year-old redhead. Funny, smart, innocent and totally reckless, Robin possessed a very strong sense of what was right and what was wrong, making of herself a beautiful mixture of opposites. She had big, hazel eyes and freckles.
Robin always seemed to be down-to-earth, which was the basic reason for her friendship with Harry. He liked to fantasize about everything; but Robin usually brought him out of his reveries, which was good.
Most people didn't understand why Robin liked to hang out with Harry. She didn't even understand it herself, but for some very freaky and unknown reason, she felt as a natural instinct that her destiny resided next to Harry.
Well, the party lasted hours and hours. Robin could finally leave around 5 am, because she was too entertained to leave anytime earlier. She gave Harry a big hug and kiss and left home. She lived only a few blocks away.
After that, Harry went to bed, and had very peaceful dreams starring himself and his all time crush, Robin.
*********
She was walking down the aisle. Prettier than ever, Robin was wearing a magnificent bride's dress which could only be described as lovely. Harry was nervous. More than ever. He couldn't catch a breath at the moment he saw her. She was smiling. Coming closer... and closer... and closer... till their faces were inches apart... "Harry!" she murmured. "Harry!" she let out, this time louder.
Harry couldn't answer. He had his jaw hanging open.
"Haaaaaarrrryyyyyyyy!!!" she was now screaming. She was shaking him vigorously with both of her pure and untainted hands.
Harry couldn't react. He really wanted to, but couldn't. Suddenly, his eyes flew wide open.
"Haaaarrryyy!!!" Serena was yelling, jerking him tightly.
"WHAT??!!" he called out with a sigh of exasperation, feeling frustrated for not being able to enjoy his dream fully.
"You forgot to drink your medicine!" Serena reminded him. Harry was taking some medicines for his flu. "You wait for me in the living room, I'll prepare it," she finished.
They both walked down the stairs, Serena getting into the kitchen to bring the medicine and Harry entering the living room.
As Harry waited, he heard a loud shriek coming from the kitchen. He cringed and hesitated, not recognizing it as his mother's at first. When he reacted, he quickly ran into the kitchen, but as he approximated it, he saw his mother close the door abruptly.
He started knocking so hard it was almost as if his fists were going to break. What the hell was that about?! he thought.
After a few minutes of knocking, his mother came out, pale and livid as if she'd seen a ghost.
Harry started asking her questions but she wouldn't answer. She just climbed up the stairs, looking hypnotized as she didn't react at any of Harry's attempts to call her attention.
Serena entered her room and left a desperate Harry raging outside. Harry only heard as she said to Daniel inside: "We need to talk". Then, he heard no noise at all.
