Chapter Five- From the Ground Up

Luna's world was completely destroyed. Harry had been practically the center of her universe. She knew that wasn't healthy, but she couldn't help it. Now her universe had collapsed around her, and she was left alone to pick up the pieces. Luna tried to tell herself he wasn't worth it, that she didn't really care. She hoped with all her heart that she could just get over this pain. She never did.

It would be something so simple as someone mentioning Harry's name, or passing him in the hall that could trigger this pathetic pang in her chest. The worst thing by far was when she saw Harry and Ginny together. Holding hands, or Ginny whispering something in Harry's ear. It made Luna feel so empty and hollow. Though she was by no means going to try to break them up. Love was putting someone else's happiness before yours.

"Loony," Ginny greeted Luna happily one day in November. "Whatcha doing?"

"Oh, just an essay for Charms."

"Charms. Isn't that your favorite subject?" a new voice asked.

Luna looked up from her parchment. It was Harry who had spoken.

"Yes, it is," Luna said. No one had ever taken the time to know what her favorite subject was before.

Harry nodded and looked down at her paper. "I don't really know a lot about Charms, but I think you have the wrong motion down for the spell in paragraph three."

She looked back down. "Oh, yes. It appears that I have. Thank you, Harry."

Harry nodded again and Ginny took his hand. "We're going to go out by the lake, see you later Luna." Ginny said, walking off.

"The lake," Luna mused softly. "Does she take all her boyfriends there? Ginny went there with Dean frequently. Interesting."

Luna shrugged and went back to her homework.

"Well, Harry," Ginny said, sitting down beside Harry once they had arrived at the lake.

"Hmmm?"

Ginny looked over at Harry. He looked completely lost to his thoughts. "What're you thinking about?"

"Nothing," Harry shook his head.

Ginny leaned over and put her head on his shoulder. "Really, what're you thinking about?"

"Nothing important."

"Oh," Ginny sat back up.

Harry stood up. "I'm going back inside, I'll see you later." He gave Ginny a swift peck on the cheek.

Harry walked up to the castle. He stopped at the library window. Harry looked in. There was Luna, off in her own little world. He smiled slightly and went up to his dorm.

Luna hugged her shawl around her shoulders. It was the first Hogsmeade weekend of the year, and she was meeting Ginny at the Three Broomsticks before heading out once more into the crisp fall air. She pushed open the wooden door. Ginny waved her over.

"Hey, Luna," Ginny smiled.

"Hello, all," Luna nodded to everyone seated at the table and then shrugged off her shawl.

"Look over at the table behind us," Ginny whispered to Luna.

Luna looked over her shoulder to see Lavender Brown curled up next to Dean Thomas. She looked back at Ginny, who had an expression of utmost loathing.

"They're not worth it, Ginny," Hermione said wisely, taking a sip of her butterbeer.

"Ignore him like everyone else does," advised Ron.

Harry and Ron plunged into a conversation about Quidditch, and Hermione just rolled her eyes.

This really isn't my place, Luna thought. I better go. I'm not really adding anything to the décor.

She stood up. "I have to go, I'll see you all later I suppose."

"Why?"

A faint glimmer of a smile fell upon Luna's lips. It wasn't Ginny who has spoken as she expected, but Harry. Harry wanted to know why she was leaving.

"This really isn't my place," Luna said softly.

Luna stepped out into the fall air. The wooden door behind her did not give a satisfying clunk as it normally did, but squeaked farther open. She turned around. Harry was standing there with her shawl.

"You forgot this," he said, handing her the wool shawl.

"Thank you very much," Luna said, putting the shawl back on. "You know, my mother made this."

"I can see why you like it so much, then," said Harry.

"Yes, I suppose you can," Luna looked him straight in his green eyes. Harry held the gaze.

"You better get back inside," said Luna, holding the gaze yet. "Your girlfriend's in there."

"Yeah," Harry said, turning back around.

The door shut, and Luna nodded at that as if agreeing to the door's statement. She hugged the shawl around her tighter yet, and left the village.

On a day like today

I looked at you and I

Saw something in the way

You stared into the sky

I saw that you were sick

And tired of my wrong turns

If only you knew the way I feel

I'd really love to tell you

But I could never seem to say the words I needed to

On a day like today no other words would do

I saw that you were sick

And tired of my wrong turns

If only you knew the way I feel

I'd really love to tell you

But I can never find the words to say and I don't know why

I never can find the words to say and I don't know why

Chapter Six- Never Again

"You are honestly so strange, Luna," Ginny shook her head. "I don't think I'll ever understand you."

"Oh, were would be the fun even if you did?" Luna asked.

Ginny sighed. "You lost me, Luna."

"Think nothing of it," said Luna as she packed her trunk. "Are you going home for the Christmas holiday?"

"No, Ron and I are going to stay here to keep Harry company."

"That will be nice," Luna said idly as she tossed some socks into her trunk. "Ginny, what is the point of wearing socks?"

"Um, what?"

"I just don't see why we wear them anymore," Luna sighed.

"Okay. Whatever," Ginny hopped off of Luna's bed. "I'll see you after holiday. Happy Christmas."

Luna heaved her trunk out into the corridors. She felt the end of her trunk go up. Luna looked up to see it was Harry, trying to help her with her trunk.

"Oh, thank you," Luna said.

"Going to see your Dad?" Harry asked.

"Yes, and my grand parents as well."

"That should be nice," Harry said conversationally.

"Oh, yes it shall."

They both set the trunk down.

"Thank you for your help, Harry."

"No problem, see you."

Luna boarded the train, smiling to herself. Holiday was fairly normal for Luna, her grandfather fell asleep in the Christmas pudding, her grandmother burned the turkey, and her father rambled on about the Quibbler.

Luna returned back to school late on New Years Eve, about eleven o'clock. She heard a loud noise coming from the staircase. Luna approached the source with caution. It was only Ginny.

"Oh, hello, Ginny," she said, squinting into the dimly lit corridor. "Shouldn't you be in your dorm?"

"Hey, Loony," Ginny swayed as she spoke. "Have a drink! It'sh New Yearsh!"

"Honestly, Ginerva," Luna walked over to Ginny. "I expected more of you. Look at yourself, you're drunk."

"No," Ginny hiccupped. "I'm not! I just had shome fire whiskey."

Luna put her arm around Ginny for support. "Come on, let's go."

Luna put Ginny back into bed. "You should be able to sleep it off. Though you'll have a headache in the morning."

"Shure thing," Ginny yawned.

Luna went back to the Common Room where almost all the Gryffindors were slumped over, sleeping. Luna shook her head and went to her own dorm.

"Ouch," Ginny moaned as she held her head. "What happened last night? I don't remember."

"You snogged the hell out of Harry that's what," Ron said darkly.

"And you were drunk," Luna reminded her.

"Oh, whatever," Ginny waved a hand.

"Hardly a proper welcome back," Luna smiled teasingly.

"Shut up," said Ginny.

"You said the most interesting things."

"What did I say?" Ginny demanded.

"Relax, you didn't say anything."

Ron and Hermione laughed. Luna stared off in Harry's direction. Harry was not listening to their conversation and appeared to be the only one besides Hermione who didn't have a hangover.

And that's why I love you, Luna thought. You're different than everyone else. I wish I could tell you, but I can't. You love Ginny. I suppose my love will eventually fade. Then I'll forget you completely.

This is the last time
That I will say these words
I remember the first time
The first of many lies
Sweep it into the corner
Or hide it under the bed
Say these things they go away
But they never do
Something I wasn't sure of
But I was in the middle of
Something I forget now
But I've seen too little of

The last time
You fall on me for anything you like
Your one last line
You fall on me for anything you like
And years make everything alright
You fall on me for anything you like
And I no I don't mind
