Total Eclipse of the Heart

"Draco!"

"What?" asked the blond, spinning around with a look of annoyance.

"I..." Harry trailed off. There was something that he wanted to say, but as always when around Draco, he was lost for words.

"Were you going to say something? I'm in a bit of a hurry," started the taller man, tapping one of his feet impatiently on the ground.

>Turn around< Every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you're never coming around.

"I was just going to ask where you were last night," said Harry quietly, looking not at his lover's face but at the tapping foot. For some reason, he did not want to watch Draco as he made his excuses.

"I was out. I do have other friends now, you know."

"I know, I-"

"You what?"

Harry sighed. It was all useless anyway. "Nothing."

"Good. I need to go." Draco turned and began to make his way down the crowded street. Harry stood motionless, looking after him.

Draco did not look back.

>Turn around< Every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears.

Harry was losing him. He saw it more clearly every day. And there was nothing at all that he could do about it.

>Turn around< Every now and then I get a little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes.

Harry had known that it was coming.

During the War they had always been together. They had gone out and done whatever torturous jobs that society and their consciences dictated they do, and then had come back to their shared home.

Harry remembered their nights together, spent just clinging to each other like two lost people teetering on the brink of the end of the world.

Back then, that was who they had been. Harry and Draco against the world.

>Turn around, bright eyes< Every now and then I fall apart.

And then the war had ended, and Draco had moved on like the survivor he was. And although Harry had tried to show him how much he still needed him, how dependent he had become, he was steadily leaving him behind.

>Turn around, bright eyes< Every now and then I fall apart.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once upon a time I was falling in love.

"You didn't come back last night. Again."

"I was out again. Since when have you been so clingy?"

"I'm sorry."

Draco surveyed Harry for a moment, then slowly moved towards him, gathering the smaller man into his arms. Harry buried his face in Draco's neck, relishing the familiar smell that he always associated with the blond. Soap and spices.

But now I'm only falling apart.

"I just... I know that it's good that the War is over. But sometimes I just miss the way we were."

Draco pulled back and looked at him closely.

As Harry stared into his gray eyes, he realised that for the first time he was able to read nothing in them. It was like he was talking to a different person, a different Draco.

There's nothing I can do.

"You miss it?" the Other Draco asked incredulously.

"Not the War!" Harry said quickly. "But we were, well, closer then. I sometimes feel that we're losing that, now it's all over."

Draco drew back further, the gap between them feeling to Harry like a yawning chasm.

A total eclipse of the heart.

"Harry, we agreed that we wouldn't talk about it."

"I know, but-"

"We said we weren't going to talk about it!"

Harry shook his head, feeling everything slipping away from him. "We need to talk about it!"

"Why?"

Once upon a time there was light in my life.

Harry sighed.

"Because I feel like I'm losing you."

But now there's only love in the dark.

Draco took another step back.

"Do you base everything we have on what we had then?"

"What else is there?" asked Harry despairingly.

Draco froze for a moment, then slowly shook his head, pale locks swaying from side to side.

"Nothing," he agreed quietly. "We have nothing."

Nothing I can say.

Harry watched his lover take another long step back, and then, with a last look, turn around.

A tear rolled down his face as Draco closed the door to their flat for the last time, and he heard brisk footsteps fading away.

A total eclipse of the heart.
