Sounds of clattering woke Draco up. Startled, he opened his window and saw his father’s owl outside. Pix seemed to be struggling with a letter twice the size of what it usually carried. Feeling sorry for the bird, Draco quickly untied the letter and allowed it to have a sip of water before flying away. Tearing open the letter, he saw his father’s big, bold writing:

Son, I have received information that you are in trouble with the headmaster? If so, please treasure the time spent in the headmaster’s office. There might be things lying around that are important. The Dark Lord is getting anxious nowadays. He wanted things to be going at a faster pace. Our spy in the Order has been reporting things that are too minor to be taken note of. The Dark Lord gave me an order that I would be a fool to refuse, though I believe the idea is a foolish one. He wants you to lure out either Hermione Granger (that Mudblood) or Ginny Weasley. Pretend you have gone over to the good side. Try to learn important information about the Order. Use your Malfoy charm. Try your best, son, and I won’t take no for an answer. The Dark Lord isn’t sure that you will succeed, but I believe you will uphold the Malfoy honor. Be a spy, like Parkinson or Goyle. The silly girl, Pansy, had been given false information and it shows that Dumbledore might be already warned against her. The Dark Lord has not ordered her death because her parents are loyal to him. Goyle and Crabbe are too useless to take in more worthwhile information. Try your best. Persuade the big fool that you can be a worthy spy. Son, it might be the last time I am sending you owls for I am going away with Bellatrix and your mother to a task given by the Dark Lord. I can’t explain much but it consists of the Weasleys. Do try your very best at the mission the Dark Lord and I have given. That’s all.
Ps. Do try to fill in the Head Boy seat next year for you will be closer to Dumbledore.
Father

Sighing, Draco put the letter aside. His father did not understand, he wanted to treat love, not as a tool for accomplishing what he wanted, but as something more. He loved Ginny Weasley. Maybe he could be with Ginny in the open because of this? Not have to hide? Glancing at the clock, he saw that he had ten minutes before breakfast. He picked up his cloak and left for Dumbledore’s office.

Pushing open the door, he saw Dumbledore looking very somber.
“Ah, Mr. Malfoy. Just the very person I wished to speak to.”
“Professor, my father has just sent this,” Draco said, thrusting the letter to the headmaster. Reading the letter quickly and carefully, Dumbledore knew his worst fear had been confirmed.
“So, the new plan of Voldemort consists of the Weasleys. Mr. Malfoy, sit.” The headmaster pointed at the chair opposite to the one he was sitting in.
“Professor, what plan?” Draco asked, sitting down.
“Well Mr. Malfoy, since the Weasleys considered themselves Harry’s ‘next-of-kin’ besides the muggles, Voldemort might be trying to attack or hurt them in such the way that Harry will find it unbearable. Harry, being of rash character, might do something he would regret. However, thanks to your letter, I will be able to send some Order members to put up wards to protect the Weasleys. I am afraid that Ron and Ginny will not be returning home for the Christmas holidays as Molly planned. Ah, I almost forgot. I must also inform people to keep a lookout near Fred and George’s shop,” Dumbledore said.
“What about my task? I have to act like a spy, spying on you, but actually I am spying for Voldemort?” Draco asked incredibly.
“Yes. For the...” Dumbledore hid a laugh before continuing,
“For the girls’ problem...” Dumbledore cannot take it anymore as laughter broke out.
“Professor!” Draco said angrily, though unable to hide the grin on his face.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Malfoy. As for the girls, you have to take your pick at either Hermione or Ginny? However if you planned to do this for real, I dare say you will choose Ginny Weasley?”
“How... How do you...” Draco asked, feeling the blush.
“I am a Legillmens, Mr. Malfoy. Therefore I can read your mind. I am sorry if I caused any discomfort. You were looking so serious that day that I couldn’t help but pry. Please be careful for Voldemort is not only a Legillmens but he is also an Occlumens. It means he can block his mind to prevent people from reading his thoughts, too. Therefore, Snape will help you to learn Occlumency to block out your mind in case Voldemort sees things he ought not to see. Keep everything a secret. If you can’t hold on any more, you can come find me and I will give you a Pensieve that you can put your thoughts in. You can confide in Ms. Ginny Weasley, as well, I assume.”
Taking in all this in detail, Draco nodded.
“Well, that’s all. I believe that a nice and delicious cream tart is down at the Great Hall waiting for my consumption? Let’s get to the Great Hall. After that, you might want to send a letter to your father and let him know that all is in order?” Dumbledore gave Draco a wink before motioning him out.

Father,
It’s done. Professor Dumbledore had approved me as a member of the Order. As a ‘spy’...
Draco

Tying the letter around a barn owl’s leg, he told it the recipient's name and watched the owl soar off. The door to the Owlery opened and a red-haired someone appeared. Ginny didn’t seem to see Draco as she scribbled something on the piece of parchment she was holding. Once she was done, she called to her owl and tied the parchment on its leg. Only after she turned to leave did she notice Draco standing behind the door.
“Oh. It’s you. You gave me a scare,” Ginny said.
“Who’s the letter to?” Draco asked curiously.
“None of your business,” Ginny replied. She turned and left the Owlery, forgetting that she had left her quill. Picking up her quill, Draco was glad for an excuse to talk to Ginny again...

“Ginny?” Colin asked.
“Yes, Colin?” She was irritated by her best friend. There she was, trying her best to tidy up the mess she made at the Greenhouse, and Colin was nudging her.
“Malfoy’s been standing there, staring at the both of us for the past few minutes.”
“Where?” Ginny asked, looking up. She saw Draco staring at her and then burst out laughing, hiding behind the group of second years that were passing. Baffled, Ginny turned to Colin. Without a word, Colin burst out laughing too, pointing at Ginny’s face.
“Scourgify.” Ginny took out her wand and pointed it at her face, finally knowing what caused the boy’s laughter. With a yelp, Colin stared at the figure behind Ginny and made a run for it. Knowing who was behind her, Ginny twirled around.
“Mr. Malfoy. What are you doing here?” she asked innocently
“I came to return this, Ms. Weasley,” he told her, taking out her quill from his bag.
“Oh. If that’s all, I’ll be going.” Ginny grabbed the quill from Draco and turned to leave, but Draco took hold of her arm.
“Not quarreling I hope?” Professor Sprout asked. Letting hold of Ginny’s arm guiltily, Draco left, leaving Ginny to stare after him.

‘Stupid Professor Sprout. I was so close in asking Ginny out!’ Draco grumbled to himself. He remembered how soft her hands felt. Exhaling deeply, he went back to his dorm to get his books for Defense Against Dark Arts...

After his DADA lesson, Draco was in no mood to go to the Great Hall for dinner. He was given homework for not practicing the spell. He was spending too much time thinking of Ginny. He had to get his grades up again to be qualified for being Head Boy next year. He checked the time table pinned on his table and saw that he had duties with that stupid Mudblood. ‘It’s gonna be a drag...’ Draco thought sorrowfully.

“Granger, you might think that being late is acceptable, but I don’t like it. Refrain from being late, that is, if you know how to tell time,” Draco drawled.
“Malfoy, we are doing duties together. I don’t want to see your disgusting face snickering at me,” Hermione snapped.
“Well then. You take the classroom and I will patrol the corridor.”
“Malfoy, Professor McGonagall said...”
“Listen. I make the decision and YOU listen. I patrol the corridor, and you go take the classroom now. Oh, I forgot, you must be wondering what a classroom is, right? A big rectangular room with tables and chairs. Get it?” Draco remarked.
“Fine. Just don’t get lost, ‘cause I doubt you can read a map.” Hermione turned around and walked off to the classroom. Taking a deep breath, Draco went to patrol the corridor, hoping to catch a particular Gryffindor out of bed...
