Eternally Yours
I'll think of you whenever I see the sun coming up over the horizon in the mornings. I'll remember that day we sat on the hill and watched as the dark village with my house beyond it were silhouetted with flaming oranges and reds. The way you looked at me, and commented on how we linked the earth to the sky, your hair golden and mine scarlet. We bridge a gap, you told me, and you smiled a sparkling smile. More than the images, because images fade with time, I'll remember that feeling I felt as my head rested on your shoulder as we watched, and how you stroked my hair so lovingly. I'll remember how it felt when you smiled that smile, that feeling in my stomach that spreads all over me, warming me more than the largest fire or the brightest sun. And when I'm old, grey, and most probably lonely, I'll remember that August morning, and how you told me you loved me, and meant it too.
I will remember our first kiss as I breathe my last breath, for it felt as though I had never breathed before our lips met, that day, in a darkened corridor in the Hogwarts dungeons, the dark and the cold contrasting the brightness and the heat between us. If ever I find myself in a dungeon, or somewhere dark and cold, I'll think of stolen kisses with you and I will not be afraid.
I will smile every time I receive a letter, because I will remember the love notes you sent to me each morning. Every word chosen so carefully that two lines would take you all evening...two lines was all I needed because those words were so sincere that I did not stop smiling for the entirety of the day.
When I hear of secrets I will know I have one too, the secret of your love that I will hold in my heart for as long as I am on this earth and beyond that into the next life. We held a love so fragile that no one could know it but us and I'm glad of that, for now I will always hold a torch in my heart for it, a private torch that will keep burning and keep me living through the darkest of my days.
And when the snow caps the roofs of the houses surrounding me I shall think of that night we met in the village in the old rundown shack up on the hill, overlooking the shops and the houses and a glimpse of the castle in the distance. That night that we found a room upstairs, lit a fire and watched out of the window as the scene before us became more and more picturesque, as the snowflakes settled upon them, tiny kisses upon the trees and the roads. I will remember how warm I felt in the freezing cold as you held me, and as we showed one another the true depths of our love for the first time. I will remember how I cried because I was simply so overcome with emotion and fear and love, and I will remember how you washed it all away with one fleeting, fervent kiss.
And, Draco, when I see a pair of eyes as sparkling grey as yours I will know that you are with me. But I will know that I have done the right thing in leaving you. We cannot be together now, for I am only sixteen, and you are, though a year older, still youthful and deserve freedom yourself. You do not deserve to be tied down by a little girl with too much love in her heart and morals that do not suit you. I cannot live a lie, Draco, for I love my family and my friends and I will not let them find me to be a liar.
Your family wishes a very different path for you than the one you would take if you were with me, and I do not wish to be the one that forces you to think nothing of your name. You are not who you are without it Draco, it's a reason why I love you and I would not want you to change that.
By being together we would break countless hearts and make this war we are living through even harder for everyone. Perhaps, through being together we would break our own hearts and our relationship would end with hatred, and though by now you may hate me for doing this, I cannot face the prospect of ever hating you.
If fate should one day see fit to bring us together again I will not fight it, I will welcome your arms and your heart and I hope that it would be so in a far off time and place, one which would allow us to be together. This time, and this place, simply will not.
This is not what I want, but it is what is right.
Forgive me, Draco, for your pain makes mine a million times worse, with no exaggeration. But I will always love you, and make no mistake, every word that is written here is truer than either of us will be able to comprehend.
Eternally yours,
Virginia.
