Chapter 1: Confessions
"Harry! I have to tell you something important," said Ron while they were walking to the Gryffindor Tower. He pulled him aside.
"Okay, Ron, what is it you want to tell me?" asked Harry.
"Well, Harry...I love Hermione."
"I know, we all love Hermione."
"No, no, no! I think I'm in love with her. I love her beautiful curly hair, her silky skin, her glittering eyes..." As you can obviously tell, Hermione has been blooming. With rosy cheeks, a slim figure and cute little nose. And along with a perfect smile. "It started all this year when she just got her braces off. Right when we first said 'Hi'. I swear, I was going to faint..."
"Enough -," said Harry, beginning to get sick in his stomach. "That's about enough I can take of your babbling."
"I just had to get it off my chest," sighed Ron. "It seems that lately, I haven't been able to take my eyes off her. I've noticed that she is utterly perfect in every way...so sweet...caring..."
"I said enough."
"Just please don't tell anyone, Harry. I really don't want word to get to her. If she knows, she might not like me back. If she doesn't like me back, I won't be able to survive. I just..."
Harry put up his hand. "Okay, I promise." Harry sighed.
Hermione walked by them with what looked like three five-pound books in her arms, not paying any attention to Ron or Harry.
Ron sighed. "Look at her. See how gracefully she glides across the ground?" His eyes softened and his smile widened.
Harry rolled his eyes and pushed Ron. "Why don't you go help her? So she won't crash on the ground?"
"Do you really think I should?" He asked nervously.
"Oh, c'mon, Ron! You've been helping her hold her books all the time! What's so different about doing it this time?" Harry whispered loudly.
"I don't know..."
"Then GO HELP!"
Ron sprinted a bit and caught up with Hermione. "Um, Hermione...would you like some help with those books?"
"Why thank you, Ron. That's very kind of you," said Hermione as he took the top two books on her stack. She smiled at him, and Ron could have sworn he would melt away. "So are you excited about this new year?"
"Oh yeah, of course...as always," he lied.
"Funny, I always thought you hated the new school years."
"Well, this year is special."
"Special is it?" Hermione raised her eyebrow. "Why is this year so special?"
"No particular reason," Ron smiled. Hermione giggled and flipped her hair out of her face.
"Boys...they never tell girls the truth," she joked and lightly bumped into him. Together they walked through the Portrait Hole where it was empty. Since it was a Saturday, most of the students were probably in Hogsmeade. Only a few first and second years lurked around.
"Thank you again, Ron," Hermione said, taking back her books from Ron. "You are so helpful!" She grinned.
Ron expected her to kiss his cheek, but figured he was pushing it.
"Now I must start reading," she said flatly, sitting on a chair and opening her book.
"What did you check out anyway?" Ron asked casually.
"Just some books about Dark Arts and Muggle History." Her eyes were stuck on her book.
"Oh, I see." He paused. "Is there anything interesting in there?"
"Not quite yet. I barely started."
"Oh, I see." He just stood there, rocking back and forth.
"Ron, if you're bored you can go," Hermione offered.
"No, no. I'm not bored. I'm just, you know..." Staring at you reading your book...watching you and gazing at your beauty, he thought.
"Actually, Ron, I don't know," said Hermione as-a-matter-of-factly. She looked up from her book and stared at Ron with a questioning look on her face. "I can't read minds, you know."
"Good thing," he murmured under his breath.
"Pardon?"
"Nothing...I think I'll just go find Harry," he said as he walked to the Portrait Hole. "Have fun reading your book."
Hermione gave him a soft smile and looked back down at her book.
Suddenly Harry came in through the Portrait Hole. "Hey, Ron."
"Harry, I was just going to go look for you..." his voice trailed off.
"I guess I found you first now didn't I?" Harry chuckled. He glanced at Hermione and back at Ron. "I see you two have been having fun."
Ron blushed slightly. "I think I'll go get my chess set." He walked to the stairs leading to the dorms.
"Good thinking," said Harry even though Ron couldn't hear him. Lazily, he let himself fall on the sofa.
Hermione closed her book. "Harry," she began, leaning towards him.
Harry straightened up and looked at her. "Yeah?"
"Do you think Ron's been acting a little strange lately?"
"Uh, strange? In what way?" Harry asked as if he didn't know.
"Like, he's been so helpful and thoughtful lately. He just hasn't been acting like himself," she said.
"Do you not like it?"
"No, no. It's not that. I mean he's really sweet. He always has been." She smiled and leaned back on the chair. "And he's always had such a charming part of himself. It's just he never really showed it until now." She giggled slightly. "Don't you love the way he smiles too? How cute he looks..."
"Hermione," Harry interjected.
"Yes, Harry?"
"Do you like Ron?"
"Of course I like Ron, he's my friend," said Hermione, looking away from Harry.
"You know what I mean, Hermione..."
Hermione's cheeks flushed a bright pink.
"Ah, so you do!"
"Not that it matters," she mumbled. "I don't even know if he likes me too. He's probably into pretty girls like Parvati." Hermione obviously did not notice how much she has changed over the summer.
"Nah, I don't think he's into Parvati." Harry winked.
Hermione smiled lightly. "Do you think he could like me too?"
"You'll never know." He grinned. Hermione giggled lightly.
Down came Ron who saw Harry and Hermione talking together softly and Hermione giggling. Could it...could he have...Is Harry in love with Hermione? Is Hermione in love with Harry? He would never backstab me...right? His mind was going wild.
Ron walked towards the both of them with his chess set in his hands. "Hey Harry, ready to play?"
"Yeah, definitely."
"Well, I supposed I should leave you two alone to play. I don't think you two would like a girl like me hanging around." She began to get out of the chair with her books.
"Hermione - wait!" Harry exclaimed.
Both Ron and Hermione looked at him questioningly. "Uh, don't you want to learn how to play wizard's chess more in depth?" He winked and gave her a 'you know it's so obvious this is the time to be with him' look.
"Oh. Uh. Yes! More in depth." Hermione smiled and turned to Ron. "Ron, would you mind teaching me?" She fluttered her eyelashes. "After all, you are a superb chess player."
Ron glanced at Harry whom stuck up his thumb. "Uh, I wouldn't mind at all." He set up the chess set on the table between them. Harry backed away.
"Okay, so...do I move?" asked Hermione. "Since I'm white?"
"Yes. Move anyone you want," said Ron. "See, the knight moves in an 'L' shape, and these little things, called pawns, they can move two on the first move, or just one forward."
"Hmm..." Hermione moved her pawn forward two. Ron moved his pawn too. Hermione continued to move her pawn once again. (CHAARRGGEEE!) After a while she moved her knight near the other side of the board. Suddenly, Ron's knight chopped off Hermione's knight's head.
"Heey!! That's not fair," she whined and pouted.
"That's chess for you," he winked.
Hermione, without thinking, took his knight while it was yelling and swinging its sword. He ended up cutting Hermione's thumb. "Ouch," she mumbled, dropping the knight on the board. "Violent little things, aren't they?"
"That looks like a bad cut," said Ron, leaning over to her. "Are you okay?"
"Sort-of," mumbled Hermione. She squeezed her thumb and Ron took out his handkerchief and handed it to her. She wrapped it around her thumb.
"I didn't know it would bleed so much,"she said.
"Yeah, well...that black knight. He's really cranky."
Hermione giggled a bit.
"Did it stop bleeding?"
"Yes. But it still stings a bit."
"Let's have a look-see." Ron took her hand in his and unwrapped her thumb. He examined her thumb. "When I was little my mum kissed my wounds. Then they were all better." He kissed her thumb. "Is that better?"
"No..." she said softly.
Ron pulled her to him and kissed her lips gently. "Is that better?" he asked as he let go of her.
Hermione, caught in the moment, parted her lips a little and her eyes were dazed. She nodded and touched her lips with her fingers. "Oh, Ron...I have to go."
Ron looked disappointed. "Oh. Ok."
"Yeah. These books, I have to put them away before I lose them." She took her books and ran up to the dorm.
Ron let out a heavy sigh and collected his chess set.

Harry backed away from them and without looking, bumped into Ginny near the Portrait Hole. "Oh sorry, Ginny. I didn't notice you. I mean, I did notice you, but I didn't know you were there...I mean...well. I was just distracted." He mumbled.
"Distracted by that?" Ginny pointed towards Ron and Hermione. They were lip-locked.
Harry turned around to see Hermione and Ron stuck together. His jaw dropped and turned back to Ginny. "Wow. Ron really moves quickly," he chuckled. "I never expected Ron to have the guts to kiss her." Harry smiled. "I guess in a way I expected it coming."
At the spur of the moment, Ginny pulled Harry to her and kissed him quickly on the lips. "Did you expect that, Harry?" Ginny asked. The shy little redheaded girl had more guts than he expected. Ginny didn't even realize she had that kind of courage (kind of like her brother). She wanted to show him how much she cared.
Harry was shocked. "Um. No. Actually I didn't." He slightly smiled. Then he shook his head and quickly changed the subject. "Um, I have to go to the library," he lied and gently patted her back.
He walked out of the common room with his hands in his pockets. "I can't believe that actually happened," he said to himself. True, Ginny had gotten very pretty over the summer, but he still couldn't believe it would also change her personality.
"What actually happened?" Lavender Brown interjected, suddenly walking next to Harry.
Harry glanced at her. "Nothing. Nothing at all."
"Oh, Harry. You're always hiding little secrets," she squealed. Suddenly Parvati was walking on the other side of Harry.
"Hello Harry," said Parvati in a seducing tone as she fluttered her eyelashes. "Anything new?"
"Um, no..." his words were slurred together.
"Oh, there's ALWAYS something new with you! Silly goose..." They giggled together.
Harry raised an eyebrow and stopped walking. "What is wrong with the two of you?"
"Nothing at all, Harrykins." Lavender smiled.
"We are just curious about your day," said Parvati.
"Parvati, you never really cared about me after the Yule Ball in the fourth year. And Lavender, you're never around me when Hermione isn't around. What are you two up to?" Harry snapped.
"Well, if you must know..." began Parvati, "we just heard about what happened between Ron and Hermione."
"What? That just barely happened five minutes ago!" Harry exclaimed.
"News travels quickly among us girls, you know," Lavender replied. Harry stared at them blankly.
"Soo..." the two girls harmonized.
"So what?"
"How long did you know the two of them were going to be together?" Lavender asked anxiously.
"I didn't..."
"Did you teach Ron how to kiss like that?" Parvati interjected.
"Did I wha-?"
"You must've. I heard he was a real good kisser, and who else could've kissed more girls than the great Harry Potter?" Parvati exclaimed.
"Me?" Harry gulped.
"YES!" They both put their hands on his shoulders.
"Um, girls, can you two please just leave me alone?" He asked.
"Oh of course, Harrykins! Anything!" Lavender exclaimed. Harry didn't know whether it was sarcasm or if she was sucking up badly for some strange reason.
Harry quickly walked away as soon as they let go of him. He looked back and saw them waving their hands at him. Quickly, he ran into another corridor and slammed into Draco.
"Oh, Malfoy! I'm sorry. Very sorry." Harry exclaimed.
"That's okay Potter," said Malfoy with dumb and dumber by his side. He looked around. "So, where's Weasley?" He raised his left eyebrow.
"Um, Ron?" Harry could feel tension. "He's um...somewhere in the common room, with Dean and Neville," he lied.
"Oh I see," Malfoy said. There was an awkward silence.
"Well, I'll be going now..." said Harry, beginning to walk away.
Malfoy grabbed his wrist and pulled him back. "Potter, I need to tell you something. Something important," said Malfoy sternly, looking into Harry's eyes.
"Ookay," Harry replied uneasily.
"Crabbe, Goyle. Get outta here," commanded Malfoy. The two quickly ran off. Malfoy put his hand on Harry's shoulder, and lowered his head a bit. "Potter...I- I - oh boy, this is going to be hard. But um, Potter...I think I'm in love," whispered Malfoy.
Please don't be in love with me, not with me, not with me, Harry prayed. "With...who?"
"With Hermione," sighed Malfoy. "She's amazing." he said letting go of Harry's shoulder.
"With Hermione?!" Harry exclaimed. "Are you serious?"
"Yes, very serious. That's why I'm making friends with you. Have you noticed how I didn't beat you up in the last week?...but it's a different story for Weasley."
"It is?"
"Yes...Ron and Hermione kissed! Haven't you heard?"
"Wait, how did YOU hear?"
"I over heard the Slytherin girls talking," replied Draco.
"Um, Okay. I'm going to go now," said Harry, slowly backing away.
"Potter! No, you can't! I need to ask you things about Hermione!"
"Sorry I can't talk right now, sort-of busy...you know, uh, heading to the library." Harry muttered, gaining speed. Suddenly he turned around and started dashing away from Malfoy.
"But - DOES SHE LIKE FLOWERS?!" Malfoy cried out.
"Yeah, sure," hollered Harry.
After a while, he stopped running and caught his breath. What was going on?!
