This story kind of popped into my head as I was reading many of the good stories here on fan fiction. I hope you all enjoy my first chapter in this spur of the moment decision to write a story.

(Author's notes) This story kind of popped into my head as I was reading many of the good stories here on fan fiction. I hope you all enjoy my first chapter in this spur of the moment decision to write a story.

It was an eerie night. The clouds had crept in, dark as a black hole. The air was charged with the magic that had previously been cast, causing spontaneous light, noise and heat. The wind howled, chilling to the bone; sound ceased to exist. Only the moans of fallen wizards and the figures strewn about the enclosure showed what the place really was -- a battlefield. Other than the bodies lying there on the ground, something horrible was happening, the battle's heroes were about to meet. In the midst of the Great Hall wizards and witches, dark and light alike, watched intensely as two figures stood staring at across the room, only silhouettes in the darkness. Silently bidding each other to make the first move, they stood beholding one another.

Harry Potter looked around, seeing everyone watching, friends and foes. Ron, Hermione, Ginny, George, and the rest of the Weasley family were sitting in the corner where the Slytherin household usually sat. All of them had taken a seat there half in shock from the death of Fred and everyone else that had once been a close friend, and half astounded at the scene that lay before them. And there were Neville and Luna, the former having a blood stained shirt not from personal injuries, but from killing Voldemort's pet snake Nagini. Death Eaters were cornered by the Ministry of Magic's Aurors at the edge of the Hufflepuff table in the Great Hall. So few had come from the battle outside. The fight for Hogwarts had cost both sides many losses, not only in people.

All of this passed through Harry's mind as he scanned the crowd in the Hall. Once again he looked at his enemy, Lord Voldemort. Voldemort had a grin on his face as wide as a giant is big. He knew in his very core of his being that he had won, and that all he needed to do to take control of the world would be to pronounce two simple words. Harry Potter's death was imminent. Harry stood once again in the presence of the most powerful dark wizard the world, or the wizard world, had ever known, and in his heart committed to remove the threat that was Voldemort once and for all. Grime on his face and dirt smothered on his clothes, Harry started to talk to Tom. "You don't have to do this. Many innocent lives can still be saved if you surrender now." Riddle laughed at this fool's feeble attempt to stop his world domination. He answered, "Harry, this is your last chance. You don't have to do this. Many innocent lives will be lost if you die. Come to the side that genuinely deserves to be the rightful heirs of this planet. We should not be afraid to rule over those who live will live in fear because they cannot stop us for being what we are. It is the only way."

Harry's heart thudded, the noise pounding in his head, in his head, as he knew what was about to come. He looked at him straight in the eye and said softly, so Tom had to strain to hear, "The only thing that lies between the truth and death is you, and if you refuse this chance to be taken away, then we have come to a stalemate." Tom's face contorted in rage as he heard the last few syllables drop out of Harry's mouth, silently muttering the most despicable obscenities. The entire room quieted, the sound of a mouse being the loudest noise. Time seemed to slow down as Harry saw Voldemort begin to raise his wand. He dove to the right as a jet of the vilest looking green passed mere inches from his face and yelled as he pointed his wand at Voldemort, "Stupefy!" But Voldemort was not so easily defeated. He sidestepped the curse and pointed his wand once again. Harry hit the floor and raised a shield charm with a shout of "Protego!" as Voldemort's mouth started to move, green beginning to sprout from the tip of Tom's wand. Harry knew deep down inside that his life was about to end, his whole life had been a failure, and he was going to die. The green light moved ever closer, Harry only seeing it dimly because the shield charm had been activated. Darkness closed on Harry and then he knew no more.

(Author's Notes) This is my first short story I have ever written so I really would like some feedback. Was it to extravagant or did it flow smoothly?
