Heaven is a place nearby
I entered the room
Sat by your bed all through the night
She walked into the hospital wing, her legs leaden. Pulling the flimsy white curtains aside gently, she knelt down by the bed. He turned slowly as she came in, and gave her a weak smile. She clasped his hand in hers, and tried to look reassuring. Inside, she burned with pain for him. This was not justice. After all he had done, he did not deserve to die so cheaply.
I watched your daily fight
She had come every day. Sometimes he wasn't awake, sometimes he was. She just watched him sleep often. He always looked in pain when he was awake, but while he slept he only looked cold. She wanted to hold him in her arms, and kiss it better. Tell him that it was only a nightmare, that things would be alright in the end. She wanted someone to tell her that.
I hardly knew
The pain was more than I could bear
Right up to the end, she stayed. It was hurting her, but she knew he was glad of it. He was more to her than anyone else she had ever met. Anything that helped him she would gladly do. If he wanted her to, she would kill herself, anybody. She would die for him.
And still I hear
Your last words to me
Wherever she went, forever, the words rang in her head. In his quiet, hoarse voice, over and over. She could not stop them, but she didn't know if she even wanted to. It was the last thing she had heard him say. It was the last time she was with him.
Heaven is a place nearby
So I won't be so far away
And if you try and look for me
Maybe you'll find me some day
Heaven is a place nearby
So there's no need to say goodbye
I wanna ask you not to cry
I'll always be by your side
She looked. She never found him. She saw his face in windows. Sometimes she saw his green eyes gazing into her brown ones, but he was never really there. She had lost him long ago. It was too late for them. Their binding had not secured them in the eyes of fate. Fate could not be stopped with ceremonies, or anything they represented. Marriage was only real on earth. In fate it was just a word.
You just faded away
You spread your wings, you had flown
He was an angel. She had always known that he was too good for this world. Then he proved her right, and flew off to where he was meant to be. In heaven, where his beauty could still not be matched, at least he would see her. She saw him. People often told her to drop it, but it wouldn't have been her. Without him she was just Hermione Granger. With him in her heart, she could be someone. He had brought out the best in her. Whenever she was with him, she felt worthwhile. Now, she did nothing all day. She meant nothing to anybody, not even herself.
Away to something unknown
I wish I could bring you back
You're always on my mind
She never stopped thinking of him. There was no way she would. There was no way to get him back to her. She could do nothing but love him. She owned no more than that. Nothing she had was worthy of him, but that was all she could give.
About to tear myself apart
You have your special place in my heart
She may love others, but that would never erase him from her. She would be his anchor on the earth, so that he'd always be there to save her. He always had, and he always would. It was his promise. She kept her promises, and more. She thought he would keep his, so he guarded her.
Always
She would stay... but that was not what she had promised him. She had said she would be with him forever. He had said that only death would part them. He had put the ring on her finger and kissed her, but she had promised herself never to leave him. not even death could make her break that.
And even when I go to sleep
I still can hear your voice
And those words
I never will forget
So she had promised him. He was everything. She needed him to live, but he was gone. That was why. She raised the knife above her head. Light glinted off it, and she was struck by the beauty of death. The simplicity of her love, and the undying commitment, could all be sealed with the blade. It lodged itself between her ribs, and she felt it tease out her final heartbeat. The feeling was a relief from the pain she had never lost, and death was only the beginning. When they found her later, she was lying on her back, facing the carved ceiling of the church where they had married. She wore her white silk wedding gown, only that it was stained scarlet with blood. A glimmering knife stood between her ribs. She watched them find her. Watched the tears, and was sorry. But a promise was a promise. She held her hand out to him, and he took it. He pulled her away, and up. They would never part. Not by death, not by anyone.
Maybe you'll find me some day
