Author's Note:
This is only my second attempt at a James/Lily fic... please accept my apologies if it's not what's "typical" for them.

Collide

A post-Hogwarts, pre-Harry James/Lily songfic. I didn't create the characters. I didn't write the song. (Song by Howie Day).

His dark black hair fell into his eyes. He whispered something to himself under his breath and smiled. He couldn't believe this was happening. He couldn't believe that he had her. How could he be so lucky? But now that he was sure she was his, he was scared witless that he'd lose her... Oh what he'd do to keep her.

The dawn is breaking

A light shining through

You're barely waking

And I'm tangled up in you

Yeah

Lily's eyes peeled open to realize it would be at least another hour until her beau would wake up. Poor James, he was so lazy... but they had had a long night before. It was beautiful and as perfect as anything could be. It was the day after their wedding. Mr. and Mrs. James' Potter were now in a beautiful wizard's hotel in some beautiful country that she'd never heard of before.

Lily remained steady by his side all morning until he awoke to her gently running her hand across his face. Her hand lingered at his jawline until she leaned in to kiss exactly where her hand had been tracing. James smiled to himself. She was perfect... She was his.

I'm open, you're closed

Where I follow, you'll go

I worry I won't see your face

Light up again

It would be okay, they promised each other. It was only their first actual fight. Nothing too horrible.

But it was so much worse than when Lily would chastise him for late night retreats of mischief with Padfoot & Co.

This time it hurt. The words were harsh and the consequences were enough to rip at their stomachs and heart strings.

And they did.

Lily could barely look at James after the things they had said. Over something stupid--whether or not they were to visit her parents (who had shunned them) on Christmas, just because they were family... To let them know that no matter if she was a witch, if she had married a wizard, if she chose to stay in the wizarding world, she still loved them.

He refused. Her family was nothing to him. He didn't understand how she could still love them after they had denied her throughout her entire Hogwarts career. They weren't worthy. They had hurt her. He didn't want her to go through the pain of seeing them just to be degraded by them all. Why didn't she understand that?

Lily's eyes welled up with tears and all she wanted was to sink. To hide from him...

She loved him so much and it was killing her to fight like this. So she closed up and and refused to talk about it.

To her, the best way to deal was to not deal at all.

Even the best fall down sometimes

Even the wrong words seem to rhyme

Out of the doubt that fills my mind

I somehow find

You and I collide

James was trying to fix it all. He wanted to fix it, make it better for her. He wanted to renew her faith in him. He wanted her to see where he was coming from. Every attempt he made was proven futile.

She was hurt. He had hurt her. He didn't know what to do. He finally decided to himself that he would wait for her. That's what people who loved each other did, right?

I'm quiet you know

You make a first impression

I've found I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind

Lily's face hadn't shone the way it used to in almost two weeks. Had it really been that long?, she asked herself. This was ridiculous. She couldn't let her family get between the two while they were at Hogwarts or getting married, how come she was letting them do it after they had toughed through it all? After their love was proven stronger than any others?

She walked up behind his slumped-over olive figure in the living room of their home and wrapped her arms around him. He turned around with a confused look in his face. She murmured her apologies and he told her that she had nothing to be sorry for...

Even the best fall down sometimes

Even the stars refuse to shine

Out of the back you fall in time

I somehow find

You and I collide

Lily cried into his chest for what seemed like forever. He was so perfect. She didn't need her family when she had him. It was then she decided to let them go for good. Not even their children--which she was sure they would have one day--would know them. They would be better off not knowing them...

It would be perfect.

Even the best fall down sometimes

Even the wrong words seem to ryhme

Out of the doubt that fills your mind

You finally find

You and I collide

From that day, they decided that no matter how trivial the fight, they would always make up and try to not hurt each other... They realized that their relationship was not worth being broken by a few harsh words...

You finally find

You and I collide

You finally find

You and I collide

And then Lily fell asleep in his arms, on their bed, in their house... happily. James found himself realizing that he would never let her go... He would fight to hell and back to save her, happily. For she was his and he was hers and what they had was perfect...
