Summer 79

The Ataris

The day before the fifth year began.

Our last day of summer

1979

"James," said Sirius. "James, wake up!"

"Wha-what? Sirius go away!" said James, putting his pillow over his head.

"James!" exclaimed Sirius, throwing the pillow away. "Tomorrow we're going back to school! I'm not going to spend my last day of freedom sleeping!"

"Well, I am!"

Gotta live it up one time before it's over

We will make history tonight

"I have to do something to make my parents hate me so much that I'll have to stay with here with you during the summer and winter break!" said Sirius.

"Sirius," said James turning over. "Your parents already hate you so much that you have to stay here during the summer and winter break."

"Not in your parents opinion," said Sirius.

"Oh well! Like you said, we are going back to school tomorrow, you won't have to see them anyway!"

"What about when I come back, when the school year is over?" questioned Sirius. "Come on! I have a brilliant idea!"

"Okay, what is this brilliant idea?" said James, sitting up.

"A muggle drive in movie theatre!"

"What the heck is that?"

"I have no idea! But muggles love these things, and my parents hate muggles so..." James sighed and fell back down on his bed. Sirius got an idea...

"I bet Lily goes to them often, you would actually have something that wasn't stupid to say to her this year!"

"Alright, fine!" said James suddenly awake. "Should we owl Moony and Wormtail?"

"I'll do that while you get dressed." Sirius rushed out of the room.

Out at the drive in

All of our closest friends will be sneaking in

"Aright," said Sirius, "you guys can come out from under the cloak now." James, Peter, and Remus then appeared next to Sirius. "I told you sneaking past the muggles was going to be easy."

"Whoa, check out the muggle girls," said Remus.

"I claim the brunette over by the concession stand!" said Sirius.

"I get the blonde next to her!" said Remus.

"I get the..." Peter began but was interrupted.

"No, Wormtail, just.... No. These girls aren't going to be any different than the girls at school, sorry Wormtail, " said Sirius. "How about you James?" Jame's mouth was hanging open. "James?"

"Lily..."

"Yeah, what about her?" said Remus.

"She's here!"

You'll be spending the whole night

Trying everything you can

To get that girl to notice you

"What is it!" exclaimed James. "Why isn't she looking over here?"

"I think she realizes you're here Prongs, but I don't think she wants to acknowledge you," said Sirius.

"Why would she do that!"

"James, she thinks you're a 'conceited good for nothing', need I remind you of last year?" said Remus.

"I should go and say...what am I gonna say?" said James, pacing back and forth.

"You could start with 'hi' maybe? That is what people normally begin with," said Remus obviously.

"Oh, good one!" said James thumping him on the back. "That's perfect! I'll be right back."

"Do you think she'll slap him?" asked Sirius leaning over.

"Probably," said Peter.

"Ooh, pass the popcorn," said Remus smirking.

One year later, the day before sixth year began.

(The song from Lily's point of view)

Down at the roller rink

All the cool kids crowded around the air hockey table

"I can't believe school is starting already!" exclaimed Lily.

"I know, it seems like only yesterday, it was the day before our first year," said Britta, wiping a fake tear from her eye.

"We've had some good times since then," said Lily as she watched a group of guys skate by. She smiled to herself, almost as if day dreaming, then said, "Do you remember what happened exactly one year ago today?"

"Yes, James Potter showed up at the drive in, and asked you out...again."

"Oh my gosh, the guy just can't take a hint!" said Lily laughing. "No means NO! It's a good thing they aren't around here this year." Lily took a sip of her water.

"Uhh...I wouldn't say that..." Britta pointed toward the door. Sirius, James, Remus and Peter had just entered. Lily spit out her water all over the floor.

"Stalker!" exclaimed Lily. "Come on Britta, we gotta get out of here, now!" James and Sirius were putting their skates on.

"Oh, c'mon Lily," said Britta. "Don't let them get to you. If worst comes to worst, you can slap him again like last year! Sirius is here too...wow he is s hott!" Lily turned around to see Sirius skating towards her. Britta looked over at him, batting her eyelashes. "Lily, do I look ok!?"

"You look fine! Now, lets go hide out in the girls bathroom!"

"Are you kidding!? SIRIUS IS HERE!" she exclaimed running her hand quickly through her hair. He was just about to pass them.

"Oh, great..."

Hey my best friend likes you

I hear you shout at me as you go skating by

"Thank you 'Captain Obvious!'" Lily shouted at Sirius's back. "I'll see you tomorrow at the train station, Britta."

"Alright," said Britta, still distracted. (Sirius had just put his hand through his hair.) "See you later!"

"Pf...yeah if you ever take your eyes off HIM!" She sighed. "Right then, see you tomorrow."

"Mmhm, bye now!"

Another year later, the night before seventh year began.

(Song from Jame's point of view)

"I gotta see her tonight," said James.

"Can't you wait until tomorrow?" asked Sirius.

"No!" said James. "This is the last time I can really get her alone. Her friend Britta told me she wasn't going out tonight so we won't be in a public place when we talk."

"You can have her meet you in the common room!"

"Yeah, and have you, Wormtail and Moony eavesdrop? I don't think so." James grabbed his broom and sped off towards Lily's house.

He landed with a soft thud on the roof outside of Lily's bedroom window.

Sneak out of your window, darling...

"James?" said Lily, looking out her window. "What the heck..."

Let's play like our laws coming

We'll never look back...

Climb out on this rooftop

And stare at the city lights below us

"Lily," said James softly as she opened the window. "Come out and sit with me."

"James, what are you doing here!" she said, looking at him curiously. "I'll see you tomorrow." She began to close the window, but James put his hand out and stopped it.

"Please sit, I can't wait until tomorrow. I can't trust my friends, I want us to be completely alone," he said.

She looked at him uneasily.

"Just come out and sit, please?" pleaded James.

"Alright," said Lily. James helped her out of her window next to him. "What is it you want to speak with me about?" she asked business like.

He tried to look her in the eye, but he couldn't. Lily stared at him blankly. "Lily..." he said. "Lily..." When he didn't say anything she looked away at the lights in the distance. A slight breeze blew by, and she shivered. James suddenly snapped out of his 'zone' by her chattering teeth.

"Oh, here!" he exclaimed. "Take my robe."

"No, James, I'm alright," she said. "I don't want you to be cold."

"No, I'm fine, you take it," said James.

"Thanks," she said slipping the robe on. "Well, we've been sitting here about five minutes, what is it you wanted to tell me?"

"Huh? Oh-Oh yeah I wanted to tell you something didn't I?" said James, his face turning red.

"Uhh yeah...you did..."she said nodding and raising her eyebrows. James took a deep breath. He took her hands in his, and closed his eyes to help him remember what he had memorized the night before. He was determined to do this...he had to...

"As we sit together side by side I look at her

she is so beautiful

with her gorgeous eyes

her sexy smile

I wish I could see her

walking down the isle

she is everything I wanted

she is everything I need

she will always be there when I am in need

I love her to death

she is the love of my life

the only one to see the way my life has past threw me." He reopened his eyes. "My friend Erin wrote it for me, I'm not that great with words." Lily blinked several times. He looked her in the eye, or at least tried to and said... "Lily...I love you."

Lily opened her mouth and closed it several times. "What?" she said softly, dumbfounded.

"I thought it was pretty obvious."

"No, James, no," she said. "You don't love me, it's...it's nothing but a simple crush!"

"No, it's not! Do you think that I have had a 'simple crush' on you for six years!?"

"James, you can't love me! I'm stupid, and annoying, and I have a horrid temper and I...

"How can you say that!" said James. "Your smart and funny and brave..."

"What about..."

"Forget about it...I love you Lily Evans." This time he looked her in the eye and did not look away. He had nothing to hide from her, he had told her the truth. She searched his eyes as if trying to read his thoughts. Then her eyes began to water with tears.

"I can't believe it..." she said. "I promised myself years ago I wouldn't fall for you, oh dang it! I...I love you too ...Pot-James..." Then to her surprise, James started laughing uncontrollably. "Well, you sure know how to ruin the perfect moment," she said looking at him her eyebrows furrowed. He composed himself.

"Oh, right, sorry. Er-where were we?" Lily raised her eyebrows. "Oh, right about..." he scooted closer to her and put his arm around her waist, "here right?" She put her head on his shoulder. He got a tingle up his spine. "Or...were we...here..." he leaned in slowly and...

"Just a minute James Potter, I'm not that easy!"

"What...but...but you just said..." Now Lily started to laugh.

"Wow, and you're the master of pranks?" He smiled, then slowly leaned in and softly brushed his lips against hers.

This world belongs to us tonight

The kids will keep raging on

And we ain't ever gonna stop

When they released each other James closed his eyes and smiled.

"You don't know how long I've waited for that..." he said.

"Sorry I was late, it took me forever to get here," said Lily.

"What do you mean, you live here?" asked James jokingly. She hit his shoulder playfully and smiled. He looked at her, and cupped her face in his hand as if she was the greatest treasure he had ever held. "I know what you mean."

Na na na na na na na na

Na na na na na na

Na na na na na na na na

Na na na na na na

James wrapped his arms around Lily's waist and pulled her into another tight embrace. Beyond his wildest dreams, he never thought this would happen. He truly loved her...and she truly loved him back.
