Harry Potter and the Wizard of Oz

Harry, Ron, and Hermione walked down the marble staircase to the entrance hall, laughing softly as they watched Neville scramble down the stairs after Trevor. Dumbledore has asked all of the students to report to the Great Hall. Harry truly hoped that it had nothing to do with Voldemort.

As they entered the Great Hall, the three Gryffindors sat down at the Gryffindor table, which, for a change, did not have any plates on it. Harry was pondering on this when Dumbledore stood up at the head table. The low buzz of chatter silenced immediately.

"Good evening," Dumbledore said in his usual, calm tone. "I suppose you are wondering why I have asked you all here this lovely evening."

"That'd be nice!" Fred (or George, Harry wasn't sure) Weasley shouted. Dumbledore, along with a few others, chuckled.

"Well, due to recent developments I'm sure you've all heard of," (Harry gulped, remembering reading the Daily Prophet earlier that day), "we, the staff, have decided that this place needs cheering up a bit. So Professor Flitwick has been kind enough to suggest a Muggle pastime which I'm sure you will all delight in."

"Hogwarts is going to have a school play."

Chatter started immediately. "Oh, I wonder what it'll be?" Hermione whispered excitedly.

"Probably Shakespeare or something," Ron yawned. "Boring."

"The play," Dumbledore said out loud, "will be a Muggle classic be L. Frank Baum." Hermione's eyes lit up.

"I know what that means..."

"The Wizard of Oz."

"YES!" Hermione said, doing a victory dance. The whole Great Hall echoed as everyone stared at her. She went red and sat down.

"Oh..." Neville said. "I don't think I'll try out..."

"Why not, Neville?" Hermione said. "It's a wonderful story!"

"Yes, but... I'm too scared!"

"Come on, Neville, you could be the lion!" Ron coaxed. Hermione glared at him.

"That's not nice."

"So? Neville would be good at it!"

"You've seen the Wizard of Oz?"

"Yes, I have," Ron shot back.

"If I could have your attention," Dumbledore said again. "The auditions will be tomorrow. Everyone who tries out will get a part. But, unfortunately, we can only allow fourth years and up to participate." There were groans from the younger section. "Now, now, maybe we'll do it again next year! Now, everyone who wished to audition will come to the Great Hall tomorrow at ten o'clock in the morning. You will be asked to sing, dance, and read a selection. Please have a song selected," Dumbledore said. "You are dismissed."

Harry, Hermione, and Ron walked back up to Gryffindor Tower, Hermione and Ron still bickering. Harry pondered what could happen with this... play. He had, of course, seen the Wizard of Oz, but it wasn't that, really... it was that he had never been in a play before. He wanted to audition, he really, really did, but, as the whole world knew, he couldn't dance at all. Well, he'd never tried tap dancing or anything like that before, and he wasn't really too keen on starting, but... he ought to give it a shot.

"Hello? Harry? Earth to Harry!" Ron exclaimed.

"What?" Harry said, looking at Ron.

"I said, you aren't going to audition, are you?"

"Well, yea," Harry said. "I was going to... why?"

Ron groaned. "Because I'm not. I'd rather swallow a whole tank of Buboter pus."

"Are you, Hermione?" Harry asked.

"Of course!" Hermione said. "I was in the Wizard of Oz at Muggle school. I was a citizen of Oz," Hermione smiled. "It was so much fun."

"Well then," Harry smiled, "see you there, Hermione."
