You've come to terms with your relationship. Really, you have.

Come on, having achieved an already legendary reputation with girls at the age of mere sixteen wasn't so bad.

And, after all, James has told you months ago that he fancies Lily Evans more and more, that his feelings for her have grown beyond mere attraction, that she's the Right One, that he even thinks about popping The Question to her.

And how could you be anything else but understanding? James had been so, so wrecked when he told you about this, you saw how torn he had been, and still is, between the two people he loves, how much it torments him to hurt you. It nearly breaks your heart, you can't do this to him, you have to understand.

Thus, you can handle the situation, you really can.

And so you laugh and joke, keep a happy face, flirt, flirtflirtflirt, and wait for him to come to you in the dark of the night.

Besides, you absolutely like Lily. She has given James a hard time to convince her, hasn't fallen into his bed like a ripe fruit; she is beautiful, sweet and tough, gentle and curt, all at the same time - gosh, if you hadn't your secret yet strict preferences, you'd even consider wooing her yourself!

And, above all, she knows about... well, about the, ah, situation... and she... she understands, just as you understand, oh, how couldn't you; and so you smile at her, knowing that she knows, and she smiles back, knowingly, like sharing a precious secret.

And so it is.

After all, you don't want to risk losing James.

No, really, you can handle this. It'll be three of you, then, James and Lily, and there'll always be place for you, too. He still loves you.

You can. Can han-

Oh, 'twas only on days like this that you, you - to hell, you are meant to be James' Valentine!

Yet, James is already gone, has left to meet Lily, hours ago, after telling you 'not to wait for him' - ha! - , grinning sheepishly while running his hand through this unruly mop of black hair in which you use to bury your nose, which you love so, so... oohh, wrong path of thoughts.

No, James makes being with Lily happy, therefore, it makes you happy, and therefore it has to... no, it is OK with you. As long as it stays in the family, it's OK. Period.

So, what is there left for you to do today?

Not much, actually. Dating one out of your female admirers? Nah-

Asking out Remus? N-no, better not even try, given the, ah, concentration he musters to definitely look elsewhere whenever he sees the two of you kissing - that should tell you it's not an experiment you really want to carry out.

Maybe go tease Snivellus? For sure, he'll be still around in Hogwarts somewhere, no date's to have for greasy boy... and this would maybe succeed in distracting you from these images of James, already chatting merrily, charming Lily nearly senseless, flirting, eyes glittering, kissing her, his mouth, his hands everywhere on yo-her b-body.... ooooh. Definitely wrong path.

You. Can. Handle. This.

As for now, better join the other dateless losers at dinner.

Eyes downcast, you enter the Great Hall, absentmindedly letting yourself fall down onto your chair.

A familiar voice, a surprised, shocked outcry.

"You?! B-but... why are you here... he told me he was with-"

Your head jerks up, your heart stops.

"LILY??"
