Guiding Lumos
Previously on Guiding Lumos:
Fifteen-year-old Wendelin Weasley started at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and her cousins, Ron and Ginny Weasley, accepted her, right away, as best friend. This ravishing redhead was also seen as the girl Harry Potter had a crush on...as well did Draco Malfoy, the school bully. When the Dark Lord Voldemort kidnapped Wendelin, Harry and Draco worked together to save the girl they loved. When Wendelin returned to Hogwarts, everything went back to normal. Malfoy started acting like he hated her, Harry was acting like her friend, and she returned to her life of never ending lessons and stacks of homework.
This week on Guiding Lumos:
Wendelin faces the dangers of school dances.
"Wendelin, wait up!" Harry called as they exited the dungeons after potions. Wendelin stopped in her tracks and turned around to see Harry looking rather nervous. He'd been acting odd ever since he'd saved her. Harry walked up and pulled her over to the side of the corridor.
"Err...Wendelin, I was wondering...um...would you like to go to the dance with me?" Harry asked her as Draco Malfoy walked by, scowling at them.
"Oh, Harry, that's really sweet, but...well, I don't think I'm going to go with anyone," she told him. Noticing that he looked rather put out about this, she added quickly, "But I will save you a dance."
There was an awkward moment of silence after that, which Wendelin broke.
"Perhaps we should go to dinner now? Ron and Hermione are probably wondering where we are," she said.
They made their way up to the Great Hall in silence. The only sound to be heard was the echo of their footsteps on the stone floors. They entered the Hall and headed for the Gryffindor table; Harry dropping into a seat next to Ron, and Wendelin taking a seat next to Hermione.
Hermione started piling food on both their plates, but Wendelin wasn't hungry. She stared blankly down at her food, and decided just to leave. She stood up and walked out of the Great Hall, without a word.
She was half way up the marble staircases when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned to see who it was. Oh, great, Wendelin thought. Malfoy. Just who I need to see now.
"Hi, Malfoy," said Wendelin. She wasn't surprised to see that he was smirking.
"Hello, Wendelin," he said. "So...I saw you talking with Potter earlier. What were you two talking about?"
"And what of that is your business?" Wendelin asked him.
"Well, I supposed it had something to do with the dance...like...maybe he didn't want to go with you anymore. I was actually wondering...if you wanted to go with me?" Malfoy finished simply.
He is so full of himself! Wendelin thought. Her face burned red, as she grew angry and embarrassed. "For your information, Draco, I'm not going with Harry, and I never was." She wasn't sure how to respond to the last thing Malfoy had said. She thought for a moment, and then continued.
"I'm not going to the dance with anyone, in case you were wondering. I'm going alone, and if you happen to ask me to dance then, I'll consider," said Wendelin. With that she stalked off, up to Gryffindor Tower.
Wendelin spent the next few days avoiding everyone. Even if Harry didn't seem enormously upset, she still felt bad. Malfoy had been glaring and scowling at her more than ever. Wendelin supposed she'd been a little harsh, but he should have noticed she was upset. Guys can be so stupid sometimes, Wendelin often found herself thinking.
Too soon for Wendelin, the night of the dance arrived. At eight o'clock, She made her way down to the Great Hall with Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny. They stood outside the Hall, waiting for the doors to open. The rest of the school began to arrive a few minutes after they had. Everyone stood, talking excitedly, gossiping, and comparing their new dress robes.
When the doors finally opened, everyone flooded into the Great Hall. The Weird Sisters, a band of witches, struck up a tune, and people began to dance. Harry hurried over to Wendelin and asked her to dance, reminding her that she had promised she would dance with him. She remembered this, and the fact that she never broke promises.
Dancing with Harry isn't so bad, Wendelin thought as he spun her around. More like dancing with a friend, though.
When the song was over, she hurried away into a corner, to be by herself. Harry went off to dance with Ginny, who was beaming at this. It was a well-known fact that she'd had a crush on Harry since the first time they'd met.
Once this song had finished, Wendelin noticed Malfoy walking over toward her. She looked the other way to find Harry doing the same. This can't be good, she thought.
Malfoy threw the first rude comment toward Harry, who answered it with a glare and an insult. Of course, Wendelin, being about twenty feet away, couldn't hear any of this, over the noise of the dance. She simply watched them looking daggers at each other, and mouthing threatening remarks. She was trying so hard to ignore this that she was startled to feel a tap on her shoulder and see a boy standing in front of her.
Wendelin recognized this boy, though she didn't know his name. To her, he'd always just been some Ravenclaw. She was even more surprised when he asked her to dance. She blushed at this, and accepted, forgetting about the fight that Harry and Draco were having.
As the Ravenclaw (she had forgotten to ask his name) lead her onto the dance floor past Harry and Draco, she noticed that they had stopped fighting. They were both gaping at her, mouths half open.
As Wendelin was dancing with the Ravenclaw, her heart felt lighter than it had in weeks. The boy, who introduced himself as Terry Boot, started a conversation. Wendelin found out that Terry was a muggle born wizard, like her. Terry was also the Ravenclaw keeper on the quidditch team. Wendelin told him that she was also a keeper, and played for the Gryffindor team. He said he knew this, because he'd played against her. She blushed as she remembered this.
"I hadn't been paying attention," Terry told her. "That's why Gryffindor scored so many times. I was...err...watching someone- I mean, something else," he said, blushing.
Wendelin and Terry spent the rest of the night dancing with Terry. She noticed that Harry had gotten over her quickly enough, and was now dancing with Ginny. Draco was now dancing with Pansy Parkinson, his old girlfriend. He didn't seem too happy.
When the dance was over, Wendelin and Terry made their way out into the Entrance Hall. They had been discussing the quidditch finals. When they'd finally stopped talking, Terry leaned down and kissed Wendelin, who started blushing madly. He said goodnight and hurried off to the Ravenclaw common room.
Wendelin made her way back to her dormitory thinking that this dance, trouble as it was beforehand, was worth going to.
Tune in next time, for Guiding Lumos!
