Chapter 1: The year begins

"Isabelle, je te jure, c'est pas de ma faute. If only he would leave me alone..."

My Aunt Isabelle sighs. "Just try to get into less trouble this year. I hate receiving all these owls, and I know that they make your father feels very disappointed."

At the mentioning of my father, I tense. "C'est pas mon problème," I mumble, quiet enough so Isabelle can't hear me. Louder, I say, "I really need to board the train. I would hate to miss my last year of school."

Isabelle hugs me tightly. "Je t'aime."

She caresses my hair and then releases me abruptly. "You know that you can always write to me, if there are any problems."

I nod, but we both know fully well that no owls from me will be heading her way. Although I love Isabelle nearly as much as I loved my mother, we never got so close that I would tell her about my problems. During the summer holidays, when I live with her and my uncle John, we get along well and share much time together. But as soon as school starts, it is over and I get back to my own world, while she stays in hers.

"I'll see you at Christmas," I say, smiling at Isabelle before turning around and disappearing into the crowd.

Platform 9 ¾ is bustling with people. A mother hugs his son, tears in her eyes, while he wriggles in her grip. "Mum, please, this is embarrassing," I hear him telling his mother. Not far away, I witness a completely different scene. A young boy clings to his mother, tears streaming down his face. "I don't want to leave. I never wanted to go to Hogwarts. Why can't you teach me at home? I don't know anybody else in this school, and I don't want to be alone," he cries.

For some reason, he reminds me of my brother. A memory comes up, of a young child with large eyes clinging to a woman, just like the little boy in front of me. A bitter sweet feeling rises in me, as I think back to my childhood days.

"Emilie, there you are," a voice interrupts me from my thoughts. I whirl around, immediately recognizing that voice.

"Lily," I squeak, happy to see my friend. She runs up to me and we hug each other.

"Guess what," Lily says, with a big smile on her face. "I've been made Head Girl."

My already large eyes widen in awe. "Oh Lily, that's fantastic. I always knew it would be you. Nobody else is as smart and clever as you are."

Lily blushes. "I wonder who's head boy though."

"Maybe it's Dave Miller. He's had top grades, and I could imagine him as a head boy. Lucky you, he's so gorgeous, I already envy you that you'll have to work with him together."

"Dave Miller... ," Lily repeats the name. "Well, as long as it isn't Potter, I'm happy with everybody. Come on, let's board the train and try to get an empty compartment."

* ~ * ~ *

Ten minutes later I'm sitting in an empty compartment, watching as the train pulls out of the station. Lily excused herself to the meeting with the head boy and the prefects, so I'm on my own. I stare out of the window, thinking about what to do during the train ride.

Absentmindedly, I chew on my bottom lip. I could take out one of my books and start reading. It certainly wouldn't hurt, seeing as the last year of school is supposed to be the most difficult one. But since I just don't feel like reading, I end up with my sketching block in my lap and a pencil in my hand.

Just as I finish my drawing, the compartment door opens and Lily storms in. I quickly turn the block around, hiding the image of a young boy with large eyes from her.

"This insufferable git!" Lily shouts. "I wonder what Dumbledore thought when he made him head boy. Of all the people in the world, it has to be him." Her face is red with anger.

"Lily, what happened?" I say, surprised at the outbreak of the ever-so-calm Lily Evans. There's only one situation when she gets mad like this, and this is when...

"So they made James Potter head boy?" My eyes widen as I realize what this means for Lily.

"Yes, they made him head boy and I'll be stuck to work with him for the rest of the year. You know what? The meeting hadn't even started when he already asked me if I would give him a chance this year. Could it be any worse? And then, of course, he started ruffling his hair, like he always does when I'm around. I mean, he actually looks cute when he does it and he is quite good-looking, but..."

I choke on the juice I've been drinking, nearly spitting it over my drawing. "Lily, did you just say he's cute?" I interrupt her.

She blushes. "Well, you have to admit that he is. It isn't for nothing that half of the female population of Hogwarts wants to go out with him," she answers, avoiding looking at my face.

"And maybe I would even give him a chance, if he just wasn't so annoying. Have you ever met someone as arrogant as him? He thinks he's the best and can have everything he wants, and he never misses a chance to show everybody how great he is. He was playing with that snitch again. I bet he knows just how much it gets on my nerves when he does it, and he still continues. He's making my life hell, it's like tortu..."

For the second time, Lily is interrupted in her rant, this time by the compartment door opening. Our heads turn towards the door and we grown simultaneously. Standing there are the Marauders.

"Lily, our duty calls." James grins at her like a small child at Christmas.

Lily buries her face in her hands. "Why me?" she groans.

I don't pay attention to her, too occupied with the three other Marauders. Sirius smirks at me, a mischievous glint in his eyes that makes the blood freeze in my veins. Whatever he's up to, it means no good for me.

He mumbles a few words, and suddenly all the chocolate frogs, that I bought when the food trolley came, rush towards him. If there's anything that makes me really angry, it's when people try to steal my chocolate.

"Give them back to me," I growl, jumping to my feet.

Sirius ignores me.

"So, anybody else wants a chocolate frog?" he asks his friends.

"Sirius," Lily speaks up beside me, "if you don't want to get your first detention before we even reach Hogwarts, you better give them back."

"You better listen to her, Black," I throw in, taking out my wand. Before Sirius knows what happens, I summon the chocolate frogs back to me. "And now get out," I add.

Sirius opens his mouth, his wand pointing at the chocolate frogs, but I'm faster. All of a sudden, yellow slime covers his whole body. Sirius stares down at him, opening his mouth in surprise, and quickly closes it again when the slime drops into his open mouth. He spits out a few times, glares at me and points at me with his index finger before turning around and leaving. I feel satisfied when I see that his friends are trying to hold back their laughter and follow him closely after.

"We'll meet outside," James says to Lily before leaving the cabin. It's only when the boys have left that Lily and I share a quick glance and burst out into laughter.

"What did you do to him? I've never seen this spell before," Lily asks.

I chuckle. "My aunt Isabelle has some very interesting books in her house, and I've just been waiting for the opportune moment to try them."

"I think I have to go," Lily says, still laughing. "As much as I hate to work with Potter, duty is waiting. So we'll see each other later?"

I nod, holding out a chocolate frog to Lily. "You want one? Chocolate makes happy, and it'll help you endure him."

Lily shakes her head. "No thanks, I've never really been one for chocolate."

"Your loss."

I put the frog back to the others, when the train moves abruptly and it falls to the floor. I can hear Lily leaving, while I bend down to pick it up, when suddenly, something else catches my interest. Lying next to the chocolate frog is a ring made of silver.
