Author's Note:
Written half because of a challenge and half because I´ve always to write Padma/Lavender. I apologize for the clichés. Dedicated to Nest Freemark ad werechick just cause they also wrote Padma/Lavender. And lastly, thanks to werechick (again) for being my beta.

She was crying in the bathroom when I saw her. My first thought was just to keep on walking, but it was Christmas, and we were some of the few that stayed at Hogwarts. No one else would see her, probably. And she was my sister´s best friend.

"Lavender?"

She wiped her tears away, trying to pretend nothing was wrong. "Hi, Padma. I thought you went home?"

I shook my head, but didn´t elaborate. I wasn´t going to tell her my family history now, my family problems. "What happened?"

"Nothing happened. What makes you think something happened?"

Gee, I don´t know Lavender, maybe your red, puffy cheeks, or the fact that you´re hiding out in the bathroom instead of having snowball fights or hanging out in your common room? I didn´t say anything, though. I´m not a bitch, honest. Well, I try not to be.

"You don´t have to tell me if you don´t want to. I just wanted to make sure you´re okay, that´s all." I turned to go out of the bathroom.

"It´s just--Seamus." I stopped, but didn´t turn back around. "What did he do?"

"He... well, he kissed me."

Call me an idiot, but isn´t that what´s supposed to happen when you date someone?

"I like him... but, well, not like that." Oh, so that´s what this was all about. I turned back around. "You don´t have to go out with him."

Lavender shook her head. "It´s not like that..." She took a breath, but started crying again. Shit.

"Come on. Wash your face, and I´ll take you up to your common room. It´ll make you feel better." She splashed cold water on her face, and I used a spell to dry her off a bit. "Come on," I led her out of the bathroom. "You don´t have to kiss him if you don´t want to," I said as we walked. Inside, I was thinking that I should have kept walking. I didn´t really have time to baby-sit Lavender.

She mumbled something at the portrait of the Fat Lady. She didn´t budge. "Lavender?" "leoninus -"

I smiled apologetically at the Fat Lady as she let us in, muttering about people forgetting their passwords. I looked around their common room. Luckily, it was empty, though I knew there should have been some other people staying at Hogwarts for the holidays. At least Harry Potter. He always stayed. "Should I be here?"

"Probably not," Lavender giggled a bit, and sniffed. She headed towards her dorm room. Not sure of what to do, I followed her. She sat down on a bed, I presumed hers. I sat down next to her. I wasn´t sure if she still wanted to talk, but I was prepared to take up any hints if she wanted me to leave.

"Thanks, Padma," She said. There, was that a hint now? My muscles tensed. "I guess I should say something to Seamus, shouldn´t I?" I nodded. She kept quiet for a while.

Just as I was about to get up, she said really softly, "Can I tell you something?" I just nodded again. What was there to say? She´d tell me if she wanted to. "It´s not Seamus. I mean, I do like him. I´m just not sure if I can like him, you know, like that."

As I waited for her to elaborate, she drew in a shaky breath, and then brought up her hand to wipe some tears that were leaking out of her eye. "What I mean is... I mean... " And then she kissed me. She just kissed me. I saw her coming at me, and I knew, she´s going to kiss me. And I didn´t move away. And then I felt her tongue on my lips, creeping in my mouth, and all I could think was, I´m kissing Lavender.

She pulled away after a few seconds, just after I got over the shock and was prepared to kiss her back, but she pulled back. She looked at her hands, folded at her lap. I cleared my throat. "So that´s what you mean." She giggled, and bit her lip.

"Lavender? Look at me." She did. And maybe for the first time in my life, I didn´t think, as I put my hands on her shoulders and kissed her, shoving her gently backwards onto the bed, and- oh dear- climbed on top her. Kissing her. Me. Kissing Lavender, my sister´s best friend. I stopped kissing her. Lavender rubbed her lips together and then licked them. She probably didn´t realize she did that. She looks so cute. I sat back up.

"Feeling better?" I asked. She nodded, staring at me. Please don´t, I pleaded. Hoping she was a mind reader. I made some excuse about a Potions essay and got out of there. You don´t need to tell me that was rude. I know it myself. But what else was I supposed to do? I had been snogging Lavender! She was just in a mess about Seamus. On the rebound. Or she mistook me for Parvati. Oh Gods, does she love Parvati? All right, Padma. How do you fix this? I need to talk to her. But first, I need to decide what I want to do, don´t I? No, no. What if she thinks it´s a mistake? I don´t have a choice then, do I? I opened up the blue velvet curtains surrounding my bed. Two days already past. I got up, heading for the Gryffindor tower. I need a peace offering, I thought. Even if it´s something silly. I took a flower from the ones in the vase in the Ravenclaw common room.

As I got closer to the Fat Lady´s portrait, I had to wipe my hands on my robe. Why am I so nervous? Breathe, Padma. "Merry Christmas. Leoninus."

"That is not the whole password," the Fat Lady said. "Leoninus.. totalus? Caput leoninus? Please, I have to get in."

The Fat Lady thought for a moment. "Well, I do need to get to a party the Singing Princess is throwing." Singing Princess? I haven´t seen that portrait. I said nothing. "Only if you don´t bother me again." I nodded, and she swung open to let me in.

The common room was once again deserted. I went up the stairs to the fifth-years girls´ room. I knocked, and then went in. What if Lavender isn´t here? I hadn´t even thought of that. But she was, on her bed, surrounded by schoolbooks. "Hi."

"Hi." she said. Silence. I handed her the flower. It was red. It looked pink to me before. Must have been the light.

"Thanks," she said, taking it from me. "What for?"

"I shouldn´t have run off."

"You shouldn´t have," she agreed. "I looked in Sybil´s- I mean, Professor Trelawny´s- crystal ball, and it said something who went away would come back, so I assumed that was you. I wasn´t worried."

I said nothing about the fact that it was Christmas break and all the students were gone and hopefully coming back. It didn´t matter. "Can I sit down?" She moved some books, making room for me.

Neither one of us wanted to mention the other day, the kissing. But it had to be mentioned, sooner or later. "Lavender... "

"Do you hate me for it?"

"Of course not. I wouldn´t be here, would I?"

"Do you think it was a mistake?" She asked. No, no, no. I was supposed to ask that.

"Do you?"

"I asked first." The I-asked-first defense.

"You could have just been upset by Seamus..."

"I liked it."

"You did?" That made me feel good. I enjoyed it, too. Was I becoming a person who needed someone else to feel good about themselves? Do I need her?

"I enjoyed it, too, Lavender."

"Would you like to do it again?" Something in my stomach was moving. I tried to remember a Muggle phrase to describe it, but decided that now was not the time.

"Now? Or.. You know. Us, together."

"I was hoping for the latter.. But both." she smiled. What a great smile she had. Her whole face smiled. Grayish blue eyes that twinkled.

"What about Parvati? She´ll throw a fit." I needed something to keep my hand busy. I picked up the flower. I looked closely. How odd. It was pink again, a lighter color then before

"Oh, she´ll grow out of it. She always does." Lavender had a point. She knew Parvati as well as I did. She would be happy for us, sooner or later.

"Us?!"

"Yes, us. Padma and Lavender. Admit it, Padma, you like the sound of that." "She will," I agreed. I pushed my dark hair behind my ears-I needed to make it shorter, And then touched her lighter hair, pushed it behind her ears, ran my hand over her cheek and lips. I held up the now white flower, put it on her lap. "Merry Christmas, Lavender," I said, and kissed her.
