That night, Ginny snuck out of the girls' dormitory under Harry's invisibility cloak. This was the one time she'd ever be grateful for her relationship with Harry. She was bursting with excitement as she ran down the stairs and didn't notice a stray book lying on the ground until she tripped over it.
"Stupid book," she muttered, rubbing her head as she got up.
"Is anyone there?" came a voice. A black head appeared from behind the back of an armchair by the fire. Just my luck, thought Ginny. It was Harry Potter. She stood as still as she could until he turned around and then sat down on the bottom step for what was sure to be a long wait.
After a good half hour at least of staring into the flames of the fire, Harry stood up and started towards the stairs. As soon as he had opened the door to the boys' dormitory, she made a frantic escape through the portrait hole. She emerged on the other side almost banging into a frustrated looking Draco Malfoy.
Ginny gasped and was about to apologise, when she realised she was under the invisibility cloak, and quickly put a hand over her mouth.
Draco turned but Ginny noticed that he seemed quite preoccupied, as he didn't seem to have heard her little gasp. Then he turned around and began pacing back and forth, obviously thinking furiously. Mind you, h e was just the person she'd been going to see Hagrid about.
Then, to Ginny's amazement, Draco began muttering to himself.
"I could just walk in and ask to have a word with her. But no, I couldn't do that! They'd all think that I like her and start teasing me. And it's supposed to be a secret, and I would have to wake her up." Ginny watched as he raised a hand to tuck a gorgeous lock of hair behind his ear. She kept her eyes on him as he began pacing again.
"I could sneak in and put a spell on her to make her come outside, but what if someone saw us?" He paused. "I've got it! I could leave a note! Maybe she'd show someone though?" Draco turned with his hands on his head frustration. Then he calmed himself and walked slowly up to the portrait of the Fat Lady.
"Gryffindor tower," Draco said, and the portrait swung aside. "Dumb password," he shrugged and silently walked in. By now, Ginny was very curious (and a little jealous perhaps) about who this girl was that Draco was talking about, and followed him through the portrait hole.
Ginny followed Draco to the top of the steps that led to the girls' dormitories, and stopped behind him as he straightened himself out. Typical, thought Ginny, amused, then followed him carefully inside her dormitory. She followed Draco past Hermione's, then Lavender's and then Parvati's beds, and then through another door into Ginny's own room. Draco stopped as he saw Ginny's bed covers pushed aside at the end of her bed, and the empty bed itself.
"All that for nothing?" Draco whispered to himself. "I may as well give up." He sighed as he walked out, Ginny stepping aside to let him through, while she gaped in astonishment.
