It was graduation day.
Just how everyone had imagined it would be. Happy faces, excitement, but something just wasn't feeling right. For a while now Draco had felt out of place, he felt as if this wasn't where he was supposed to be. Even knowing that he had graduated in the top five of his class did not make him feel that this was his path. He wanted, no needed something more, something different. He knew what he wanted, he wanted to follow a secret passion of his. A passion he had kept hidden for the last five years. A passion that would make his father cringe.
Draco wanted nothing more then to live in the muggle world, and he knew who he wanted to take with him.
A little red haired girl walked up beside him, a pensive look on her face. She could see he was lost in thought. He needed to be happy, excited even. He had made it, and she had too. Taking all the extra classes was worth it for this feeling. This feeling of freedom, of pride. They had finished something, and in their hands they held the paper proving it. The last six (or seven) years had been leading up to this point. This is what they had worked for, and he didn't seem even relieved. She grabbed his hand snapping him back to reality.
His eyes turned on her, and softened. He looked at her with that same loving gaze she'd received from their first hour alone; the first time that they could just be themselves. It had been two years now, two years and they were hopelessly in love. They had made it through so much and that wasn't about to change now. He leaned down to her, and looked her deep in the eye, searching, and he sighed lightly before pressing his lips to hers. The familiar sensation of butterflies welled up in her stomach and she threw her arms around his neck. She felt wonderful today, and she wished he could too.
As the crowd of jumping, loud, excited graduates dispersed the two of them were the only ones who remained on the field. Still in each other's arms, standing in silence. As they watched the sun set, for the last time, over the forest in which they had spent that first hour together, he tilted her chin towards him. He looked her in the eye and bared his soul. He told her of all his dreams that would have to go unfulfilled. He explained what he wanted more than anything in the world. He told her everything he had been keeping from everyone all of these years, knowing she would understand. When he was done, he kissed her lightly and rested his head atop of hers. There were a few moments of silence before she began to speak.
"You can do it Draco. All of it. Who cares what you're supposed to do, this is what you want. Go for it."
He responded with a wariness in his voice.
"I wish it were that easy, Gin. I wish I could just leave, forget everything that's happened here. I wish I could just let go, follow my dreams, but baby, with a father like mine, that won't happen."
"Who cares what your father thinks? He can't touch you, he won't talk to you already, what does it matter to him where you live? Or even what you do with your life? If he didn't care enough to be there when you were growing up, you shouldn't care enough to make yourself miserable by staying here. Go. I am telling you, GO. You tell me I'm the voice in your head, that I mean everything to you, that you love me more than life, well then I say go, Draco. And I think that should be enough to override your father."
"It is. It is enough, but Ginny, he can have me killed..."
"Let him try. You're smarter than him, you'll figure something out."
"Just liste...."
"NO! Just go, Draco. GO!"
With that her eyes brimmed with tears and she started across the field to the huge oaken doors of the school. He chased after her and grabbed her from behind, swinging her around to face him. He kissed the tears off of her face and brushed his hand through her hair. He looked her deep in the eye and smiled, he leaned in and kissed her deeply before dropping to one knee. He pulled a small black box out of his robe and looked up at her.
"I won't go, Ginny. Not if you don't go with me. I can't. So I have to ask you this, Virginia Weasley, will you marry me?"
Both of their hearts were pounding against their ribs, threatening to break free. She looked down at the box in his hand, and to his eyes. She couldn't speak. He began to open the box and when she saw what was inside her hand flew to her mouth to hide the gasp that escaped. It was beautiful. All she could do was nod vehemently, and that she did, with gusto. He slipped the ring on her finger and threw his arms around her, holding her as tightly as he could, spinning her around in circles as she finally squealed, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" This was the excitement he was supposed to feel today, and it had finally found him.
