Goodnight My Angel
Hermione sighed and flopped down in one of the over-stuffed sofas by the fireplace as Ron sat down beside her. They set their books and homework assignments on the table between them and glared at it a moment before drawing out their quills. As he was reaching for his Astronomy book, Ron noticed Hermione opening her Divination book and stopped her.
"Why don't we both do the same assignment so we can help one another if we stumble into a problem," he said, grinning slightly. What he meant was that she could help him if he stumbled into a problem - there was no way Hermione would have any trouble. Hermione smiled and rolled her eyes. She didn't have any trouble understanding what Ron had really meant, but she agreed and replaced her Divination book with her Astronomy book. She chewed on the tip of her quill as she looked up the assignment and began writing on a roll of parchment and looking things up in the book.
Ron tried as hard as he could to pay attention to what he was reading, but couldn't. He sighed and looked up at Hermione, who was obviously concentrating very hard. He looked at his watch and sighed again, this time drawing Hermione's attention. She looked up and pulled the quill away from her mouth. "Problems?" she asked, raising her eyebrow.
Ron shook his head in disgust. "Homework... it's Friday evening! We shouldn't be doing homework! We should be out having snowball fights!" Ron slammed his quill down onto the table, breaking it in half.
Hermione checked her watch - it read 9:23 and curfew was at 9:00.
"Ron, curfew's past. We have nothing to do except homework and we'll have plenty of time to go out this weekend."
Ron sighed again and nodded. "Yeah... I guess we should get this over with...." He picked his book up and gave it a disgusted look before opening it to the assigned page. After about forty-five minutes, Hermione sighed and put her book down. She had finished most of her homework - Astronomy, Divination, Potions, and History - and all she had left to do was Transfiguration, Charms, and Herbology. She glanced over at Ron to see how much he had finished and was very disappointed to see that he was still on Potions, his worst subject. She smirked and leaned over.
"Need help?" she asked.
Ron looked up, startled for a moment. He turned to look at Hermione and smiled. "Yeah," he said, sheepishly. "Kind of...."
Hermione smiled and moved over beside him so she could see how much progress he had made. She frowned, though, when she saw that he had completed only five inches of the assignment, and fifteen had been assigned. She sighed and looked up at Ron.
"You know what? Screw the homework...." she laughed softly. "I'll lend you mine later."
Ron's face turned slightly red. If this had been Hermione a couple years ago, he probably would have accepted. But now that they were dating, he felt bad mooching. He didn't want her to think he was a complete moron. He smiled and answered, "No... no, that's all right. I can do it myself."
Hermione raised her eyebrow. "Wasn't it your idea to work on the same assignments so we could help each other?"
Ron turned a slightly darker shade of red and shrugged. "Yeah... but I meant help each other, not copy each other's homework."
Hermione smiled weakly and took the book and parchment, setting them down on the table. "All right... but let's take a break. I'm tired."
Ron smiled at Hermione as she laid her head on the back of the couch and looked at him with her big, brown eyes. "Sure," he said and put his arm on the back of the couch.
Hermione side-smiled at him and closed her eyes. "Thank you," she said quietly and yawned.
"Goodnight my angel, time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day.
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say."
Hermione moved her head and shoulders a little to rest more comfortably now that she was in a slightly different position. Ron paused a moment while she adjust herself and then continued with the song.
"I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away."
Ron yawned and brushed his hair back with his hand again, and sang.
"Goodnight my angel now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say.
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay."
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep.
The water's dark and deep
Inside this ancient heart.
You'll always be apart of me."
Hermione sighed in her sleep and turned her head slightly as Ron began humming where the "doo's" and piano solo were supposed to be. He realized he wasn't the best singer, but singing softly he didn't sound that bad.
"Goodnight my angel now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be.
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullaby
Then in your heart there will always be a part
Of me."
Ron smiled and continued singing as the memory of his mother's singing voice rang in his head.
"Someday we'll all be gone,
But lullabies go on and on.
They never die, that's how you and I
Will be."
Ron pulled Hermione tighter and rested his head after he had finished. He didn't know why he had thought to sing that song, but he really didn't care. He was proud to have remembered that song - his mum hadn't sung it for him since he was very young. Ron yawned and slowly fell into a deep sleep as his mother's song continued to play in his mind.
