Chapter 5

From Misery to Happiness

"Hello Hermione," greeted Luna shyly.

"Yeah hi, do you mind if I talk to Ron, alone?" Hermione grabbed Luna's arm and threw her out of the room, slammed the door shut, and shot several locking spells at the door.

"Hello Hermione," Ron said casually as if he didn't mind her intruding on the two of them (Ron and Luna).

"Don't hello Hermione me, why were you kissing Luna," asked Hermione.

"Unlike you, Luna actually loves and cares about me and would never break my heart. Anyway, why do you care, we aren't seeing each other, you chose that filthy ferret," Ron protested sounding hurt.

"Ron...I'm sorry. I made a mistake, I should have selected you," cried Hermione.

"You are just jealous that I have Luna now. It wasn't a mistake. You picked Malfoy and didn't pick me bec-"

"Ron, I know that but...when I told him... he...he-" said Hermione.

"What! What did he say Hermione," he asked and put an arm around her neck to comfort her on the count of she had began crying.

"Draco said he never loved me. He said he was pretending the whole time," wailed Hermione, turned around and began to sob harder on Ron's shoulder.

Ron pushed Hermione away from him and said, "So, why should I care. I'm over you, I'm with Luna now.

"But, but it has only been two hours. How can you be with Loony Lovegood?" Hermione wailed, sounding half jealous, half angry.

"After you ran out of the owlery, Luna came in and saw that I was upset so she sat down next to me. I told her how I saw you kissing Malfoy and that you chose Malfoy over me. Luna then told me I deserved better than you. Luna also confessed to me that she liked me...a lot," answered Ron.

"Does that mean w-we can't be to-together," stammered Hermione.

"No Hermione, we can't be together," Ron told her as gently as he could possibly say it.

"Okay, but Ron, can you forgive me."

"No," Ron plainly said and left the room, leaving Hermione alone with no company except for her sorrow.

Chapter 6

Everything and Anything but Happy

Every year Hermione had spent the day of the Christmas Hogsmeade visit with her best friends but this year, she was alone. Ron was still mad at Hermione and spent as much time as possible away from her. Harry and Ginny were also angry but they also felt somewhat sorry for her but still didn't see Hermione quite as often as they did before Hermione told them everything.

Hermione was walking through the little stores at made up Hogsmeade -- recalling the night when she told the two lovers what had happened between Ron and her, from Hermione falling in love with Draco and Ron telling her that he would never forgive her.

"Bloody hell Hermione, why would you choose Malfoy over Ron, my brother, my brother," Ginny screamed and flung herself at Hermione ready to attack her but Harry stopped Ginny before she could throw a punch at her.

"I- don't- know," stammered Hermione, covering her perfect face from Ginny's fist.

"Hermione...you and Ron were the best couple--well next to me and Ginny of course. Everyone knew that you and Ron would one day see the light and start dating each other. I can't believe you would mess that all up for a slimy, sneaky, evil ferret. You..." spit Harry, fuming before Ginny interrupted him and began talking.

"You are damn stupid! I can't believe you would do that to my brother..."

Hermione had been replaying this event over and over again in her head but snapped back to reality when she saw Ron and Luna absorbed into each other, under a mistletoe right outside Honeydukes. At the sight of this, she ran towards the Three Broomsticks. Several faces turned to see who had run in but she didn't care. She walked over to the bar and sat down on the nearest, empty stool.

"What would you like," asked the bartender.

"Err...a bottle of Firewhisky," she told the bartender.

"How old are you?" he asked.

"18," Hermione lied.

"Mm, okay. Here you go."

Hermione drank the Firewhisky thirstily, not minding the acrid taste of it. When she finished drinking it, she put down the bottle down; she had heard the main entrance door open. Luna and Ron were the ones who had entered and then they sat down at a booth without even noticing the now sobbing Hermione. After having another bottle she felt stupid for trying to ease her pain with alcohol and to make matters worse, she started to hear Ginny's voice.

"Hermione... you are damn stupid...stupid...stupid..."

She walked and walked until she felt sober. During her walk she finally realized that she was alone and was stupid for making Ron's life miserable--even if it was for a short while.

"I am damn stupid... stupid... stupid," Hermione convinced herself and cried once again, "stupid...stupid...stupid."
