Prologue

Timmy Heart walked briskly down the gravel path for what would be the last time until next summer, a satisfied smile on his face. There was an excited bounce in his step and a joyful sway in his pace. Tomorrow morning he would return to London and spend the day shopping for his school things. The day after that, he would be on the train heading back to school.

Timmy dreaded the following day, the hours would drawl past, every minute would drag on and on, and he would probably wake up in the middle of the night, unable to sleep. Then, because rolling over and trying to fall back asleep hadn't worked, he started at his alarm clock, watching as she hands took their sweet time to work themselves around.

What caused this excitement, this anxiety? The answer was simple. A girl named Lavender Brown. This year would be the year. This year he would ask her out. Since his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Timmy had wanted to ask her out so badly since first year, but had never mustered up the courage. She was so beautiful and so swe-

What was that?

Timmy froze, staring off into the surrounding greenery. His parents had warned him that he'd hear sounds when walking down to the beach on this path from the back of the house, but this didn't sound like the normal cricket or the hiss of a snake. This was a clear, distant voice he was listening to.

They weren't talking, they were humming beautifully, in a way that Timmy was sure no man could. And if it were a woman, she was in danger. No female would be able to handle herself alone in the thick rainforest. Weren't women afraid of creeping animals anyway?

With a single glance up at the clear sky and the full, pearl moon in it, Timmy started into the trees, following the humming.

The grass quickly went up to his knees as he delved further and further into the greenery, the plants blossomed with more exotic shades and the canopy above thickened and darkened all around him. Only blotches and small slivers of silver could shine through the trees.

The humming slowly grew louder and Timmy's steps grew clumsily larger as he tried to hurry. He had to see her; he had to see the woman who was singing so beautifully. He just had to.

All thoughts of Lavender had completely faded away, even from the back of his mind. He was preoccupied, and he was entranced. Finally, something more then continuous green was ahead. He could see the silver sparkle of falling water and he could hear crashing waters providing a perfect melody to the humming he heard.

He slowed; knowing that rushing forward could scare her away. And the last thing he wanted to do was scare her.

Timmy peered through the last layer of the trees.

It was a small, but gorgeous clearing, backed by a tall cliff where the water fell. There were many rocks protruding from the water, all different colors from black, to slate grey. But on the largest rock, jetting out from the middle of the crystal clear, blue water, sat a woman.

She had on no clothes, but her hair, black in color, cascaded down her back and down the rock, her ends touching the surface of the water.

Her back was to him, but he could see that she was running her fingers through her hair. Her skin seemed to glisten, like diamonds, in the light.

"Miss?" Timmy asked in a shaky voice, stepping through the trees into the clearing.

She glanced back at him once and dove into the water, her humming immediately cut off.

Timmy waited for several minutes, but she did not resurface. He walked towards the water, a small voice in his head telling him to get away. His instinct said that he needed to leave, that he needed to get away, and get away fast.

He didn't listen.

He stopped at the water's edge, swallowing the large amount of saliva that had accumulated behind his cheeks.

Faces. All male. Their eyes were closed and their expressions were peaceful, but they were pale as white sand, and surely dead. But the water couldn't possibly be that deep, could it? Not right at the edge.

Timmy leaned forward, eyes going wide as he stared, half hypnotized half frightened.

Suddenly, a hand shot up out of the water, the body that was connected to it invisible from above the surface. But before he could pull away, the hand grasped his shirt right above his heart and pulled him in.

The water was deeper then it appeared to be and before him was the most beautiful woman alive. She was the most dazzling creature he could have ever dreamed of. He calmed, despite the fact that he was underwater, as she wrapped her arms around him and pushed herself to him.

Once again the melody started and everything shone a bright, fluorescent blue. He could almost feel their lips touching, but not quite.

A few moments later, Timmy resurfaced and returned back to the trail and home, less of a bounce in his step and no emotion in his eyes.
