Overcome

Chap 3 - Overcome

Harry sacrifices himself for Ginny...Will they escape this war alive?

If you walk with your head down
You can count every step you take
I know every place I've been now
I can count every mistake
I've been hurt so many times before
Almost forgotten how to dream
All
that I was running from
Is all I
need to save me

Ginny fled across the grounds, back to the castle. She had to get help. Harry couldn't do this all on his own. She felt so useless. She didn't even have a wand!

When Ginny burst through the doors, she met a disastrous sight. There where bodies everywhere.... Was that...?

"Fred?!" Ginny dropped to her knees. "No, no, he's not... he can't be..."

Ginny could feel someone pulling her away, but she struggled ferociously. She clawed at the hands on her wrists and threw herself on Fred's limp body.

"Get up, Fred! FRED! FRED! FRED?!"

Ginny shook Fred so hard that his head knocked back on the floor. Someone grabbed at her again and this time she let herself be lead away. She looked up to see that it was George. The tears flowed down her face as she saw George, really saw him. He looked broken. How could she ever begin to understand how bad this was for him?

George crushed her into his arms and they sobbed hysterically. Their other siblings appeared along with their parents and for a while, it seemed they where the only ones hurting in that horrific moment.

"RON! GINNY! It's Harry! HARRY'S DEAD!"

Ginny felt herself falling. This couldn't be real. It was all a dream. A terrible, terrible dream. Any minute know she was going to wake up. Wake up and laugh hysterically. Or rather, cry.

She soon came back to reality when George released his grip on her and sprinted away.

"GEORGE!"

Ginny stumbled after her brother, desperate to stop him before he did something that would end up in him getting hurt, or dead. She screeched to a halt when she realised that might just be his intention. It was terrible of her, but for some reason, she let him go. It was his decision. Maybe living without Fred was worse than death for George. Ginny thought that maybe it was the same for her, in terms of Harry.

"Oh, God..." she wailed. "Harry, oh, Harry..."

Her whole body felt numb. It was like she had cried all the tears she could, and was now an empty shell. Everything about her very existence seemed linked to Harry.

She was then overcome with sudden anger at Harry. He always had to be the hero. He just had to sacrifice himself, didn't he? Didn't he understand? He wasn't saving her, he was killing her! She hated him and that moment.

Ginny found herself walking in a daze around the castle grounds, not taking in her surroundings. She couldn't bear to see anything, not anymore. She wanted to claw at her eyes to erase all the terrible thinks lurking beneath their surface.

Then she saw Hagrid. In his huge arms lay the body of Harry, hanging limply. She couldn't take it. It hurt too bad. Her heart was running freely of her body, to Harry, the only boy she had ever loved. But her legs couldn't keep up. She stood rooted to the spot, simply because she couldn't remember how to move.

She saw Voldemort and his followers crowd around Hagrid. It wasn't hard to believe they had won. She saw it in front of her very eyes. They had been fighting a battle that they had always been destined to lose, her family and her. It was all over.

It came to a surprise to her as Neville rushed past her, swinging the sword of Godric Gryffindor above his head. She gasped as he bolted towards the enemy. If they where going to attack him, they showed no sign. Instead, they watched, amazed, as Neville swung the sword and sliced at their master's beloved snake, Nagini.

The next moments happened so quickly that Ginny couldn't be sure that they really happened. One minute, Harry was there, the next he was gone. Then she saw him, locked in a battle with a furious Voldemort. Ginny watched transfixed as Harry cast the fatal spell. Voldemort fell.

There was a stunned silence as people seemed to realise that Voldemort had been defeated once and for all. She expected his Death Eaters, namely Bellatrix Lestrange, to react with vengeance, but they had disappeared.

Then there was an explosion of noise as everyone around her broke into applause, cheers and laughter. Ginny couldn't understand, couldn't join in. Her world was still in darkness.

She caught his eye from across the way and didn't know what to do. She supposed she should run to him and kiss him senseless, but somehow it didn't seem fitting. So, to his bewilderment and her own, she walked away.

Ginny crept back to the body of Fred and found George there. He looked up at her and tried to smile. She appreciated the effort and offered him her hand. He took it and they stood hand in hand, gazing at their brother, broken and battered.

"He did it, Gin."

Ginny didn't have to ask to know who he was talking about.

"Yeah, he did," she breathed. "So what do I do?"

"You love him," said George, softly. "What can you do?"

It was such useless advice, yet so helpful. She gazed up at George, wondering when he got so wise. She guessed the death of his twin was already helping him to grow.

"Thanks, George."

"Go on," he whispered as he kissed her forehead. "Go get him!"

Ginny smiled, blinded by tears and made her way back to Harry. She found him, talking quietly to Ron and Hermione. His head snapped to look at her as she approached, looking wary. He saw her tears and frowned. She tried to smile, but it was too hard right now. Instead she wrapped her arms around his waist and breathed him in.

Harry held her and wiped away her tears.

"Oh, Gin. I'm so sorry," he mumbled. "It's all my fault."

Ginny didn't say anything. She didn't reply although she didn't blame him, not really.

He lowered his mouth to hers and kissed her. Her tears made it all the more sweet.

Harry was the one to fix her.
