The ultimate revenge

James triumphs

It was morning and as Lily yawned and stretched, she smiled sleepily. Wondering why she had such a bad headache, she stumbled over to the mirror. Then it all came flooding back. "Severus!" she sobbed quietly.

Her roommate and best friend, Alice, stirred. "Lily?" she muttered, groggily. Lily clapped a hand over her mouth to muffle her sobs. Climbing back into bed, she pulled the covers up over her head and cried softly into her pillow.

"Lily?"

A gentle shake on her shoulder made Lily face Alice. She gasped when she saw Lily's red, puffy eyes. "Oh, Lily! What's happened?"

"Snape!" she managed to gasp, between sobs.

Alice raised an eyebrow. "Snape?" she questioned. "I don't get it, Lily!"

Lily sighed. "You was there yesterday, weren't you?"

"Yeah, but I don't see why that would make you so upset!" she replied, shrugging.

Lily blushed. "I'm in love with him! We we're dating..."

"No!" Alice gasped.

"Yes, Alice! I know, I know! We we're dating in secret."

Smirking slightly, Alice replied: "You don't say! I knew you we're dating someone... but Snape?"

It was Lily's turn to be surprised. Had she been that obvious? Overwhelmed, Lily started to cry silently. Alice put her arm around her and hugged her tightly. "Come on, Lil. It's gonna be okay!"

"How?" demanded Lily.

"Well," said Alice. "It all depends... Do you want him back?"

Lily shook her head sadly. "No." She brushed away a tear.

"Well, then. We need a plan!" decided Alice.

"Huh? What are you on about, Alice?" she giggled, despite her self.

"A plan of revenge," explained Alice. "We gotta make him pay! No one hurts Lily Evans, not if I can help it!!"

Lily's eyes lit up, revealing a trace of the sparkle they usually held. "God, yeah! Any ideas?"

Alice looked thoughtful. "I dunno, really. I've got a couple of ideas, I guess..."

Then Lily had an idea. "Why don't we make a list?"

Her friend agreed, so they hunted for a piece of parchment and a quill. Eventually, they found a small scrap of parchment in Alice's trunk and Lily selected her favourite quill from her bag. After dressing quickly, they settled back on Lily's bed and set to work.

Lily felt a little better after writing the list. Would she really have the guts to do any of it though? She voiced her worries to Alice, who frowned.

"Lily! Do you wanna get your own back or not?" she demanded.

"Well, of course!" Lily shot back. "But there's no way I'm doing number one!"

Alice nodded. "Okay. I'm guess you're right. I'll cross that one out."

Lily smiled her thanks. "And number two and three!"

Sighing, Alice crossed out those too. "That just leaves number two and number five!"

Grabbing the list, Lily said: "What about number five? What exactly does it mean?"

Without bothering to give her an answer, Alice took back the list and crossed number five out too. She looked furious. Lily giggled. This set off Alice, who began laughing so hard she very nearly fell off the bed.

"Right! Who are we gonna use?"

Lily shot Alice a sideways glance. "I dunno!" she sighed.

"Well, definitely not a Slytherin," said Alice, wisely. Lily nodded her agreement. "Who does he hate more than anyone else?"

Lily thought hard. "The Marauders!"

"Of course! Which one though?"

"Remus?" suggested Lily, hopefully. He was by far the nicest.

Alice frowned at her, disapprovingly. "Lily!" she scolded. "Snape has nothing personal against Remus! Or Peter, if you we're thinking that!"

"Eww! As if! Okay, how about Sirius?"

Shaking her head fiercely, Alice replied: "No way!"

Lily laughed. "You're only saying that 'cause you want him for yourself!"

She was rewarded with a sharp blow to the head. "Shut up, Lily Evans! I do NOT want Sirius Black!"

"Yeah, what ever!"

Alice blushed and giggled. "Okay, okay. Maybe I fancy him a bit, so what? He is yummy!"

"Alice! What about Frank?"

"Frank? Frank Longbottom?"

Lily smiled. "Yes, Alice! Frank Longbottom. You know, your boyfriend?"

"Okay, I get it!"

"Good! So, now who? That's all the Marauders, unless you think Peter..."

Alice put a hand over Lily's mouth. "You know who!"

"No!" Lily whispered. "Not Potter!"

"Why ever not?" demanded Alice. "He's cute, available and he's mad for you!"

Lily snorted. "Yeah, and a total pig!"

"Come on, Lily! Snape hates him! You know it makes sense!"

She had to admit the girl was right. But, oh how she wished she wasn't!

The two girls down the stairs minutes later and collapsed into armchairs in front of the roaring fire. "Hey, Evans!"

Lily groaned. "Potter?"

"Will you go out with me, Evans?"

"No!"

He smiled at her. "Okay!"

Lily looked at Alice, who was shooting daggers at her. "What?!" she cried. Alice blew air through her teeth. She looked from Lily to James meaningfully. Lily shook her head, making Alice sigh.

An hour later and they were making their way to Divination after breakfast. They had just reached the tower when Lily saw him. She gulped.

Snape opened his mouth to say something, but someone elbowed him out of the way. Lily went to smile gratefully at her saviour, until she realised it was James Potter, of all people.

"Evans!" he greeted her, grinning.

"Potter."

"So, Evans.... Will you go out with me?"

Lily considered this for a second. Alice nodded at her.

"Yes!"

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Snape's face drain of colour.

"Oh, okay. Never mind..."

She sighed. "I said "Yes", Potter!"

He looked at her, confused. "You said what?"

"I said Yes."

"Yes?"

"Yes!" she said, almost screaming in frustration.

He grinned. "Wow!"

She rolled her eyes.

"See you Saturday, then. That okay, Evans?"

She found herself nodding. "It's Lily."

He looked taken aback but smiled. "Cool."

As she watched him walk, or rather strut, off she felt Snape's gaze boring into her back. Good, she thought. The plan was working.
