The ultimate revenge

Lily's heartbreak

Lily walked away, her head held high. It wasn't until she rounded the corner that she started to run. Her every step was matched to the beating of her heart. Snape. Snape. Snape. She longed to forget the pain and the heartbreak. Running helped to stop the tears from falling. But Lily knew there was only so far she could run.

The gentle wind tickled her long, red hair as it bounced against her back. Her body protested as she pushed herself forwards, faster and faster. Her mind told her to stop but her heart would not let go. She wanted to keep on running, never looking back, further and further away from those cold, hard eyes and those words that had cut at her heart.

She had no idea where she was going. It didn't matter. She didn't care. As long as she could be alone. She forced herself to keep running. It prevented her from thinking too much. Without really noticing, Lily found herself in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady. Lily glanced around, bewildered. Gryffindor tower. She didn't remember heading in this direction. She couldn't even recall stopping. But she was here. As the tears threatened to come, Lily bit down on her lip. Hard.

"Cheer up, dear. It might never happen!"

Lily glanced up at the Fat Lady. "It already has!"

The Fat Lady peered at Lily. She smiled gently and swung open, without even bothering to ask her the password. Lily mumbled her thanks and stumbled through the portrait hole.

Sniffing, Lily climbed the stairs. She hoped no-one was up there.

She was lucky. There was no-one to be seen. She had the dormitory to herself. Collapsing on the bed, Lily curled up into a ball and sobbed.

An hour later and Lily was drifting into a restless sleep. She was staring into the dark eyes of Severus Snape. They looked cold and empty. Emotionless. She heard the words before his lips moved.

"I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!"

Lily sat up, tears streaming down her face again. How could he? After all she had done for him! He had told her he loved her...

"Mudblood." Lily whispered. She tried it out again. "Mudblood." She hated the way it rolled off her tongue. What an evil thing to say!

Lily sank back into the pillows, a sob catching in her throat. No matter how much Severus hated James Potter, it was no excuse. She had been trying to help him and he had thrown it back in her face. You just didn't say that to someone you cared about.

Turning on to her side, Lily wondered what she had ever saw in Severus. No, not Severus, Snape. Never again would Lily Evans think of that slime ball as Severus. It would go back to how it used to be. Him a Slytherin and her a Gryffindor. Enemies for life. But could she really do that after everything?

She had to, she decided. It was either that or forgiving him. As much as she wanted to, she knew deep down that she never could. As she closed her eyes, Lily decided that some day Snape would pay. She would get revenge.
