Chapter 1- Forbidden thoughts

What do you do when you're in love with your best friend, but you're also attracted to his girlfriend?!

Sirius knelt beside the sleeping form of James Potter. He gazed in awe as he watched the curtain of thick black lashes of his best friend flicker in his peaceful slumber, the parted red lips and his muscled chest rising with each and every breath. He looked so peaceful and serene. When James was like this, Sirius felt safe. There was no mocking laugh, no sarcastic comments... James could be very cruel when he wanted. Not that Sirius cared. He was exactly the same. Well, in front of James, anyway. He would do anything for this boy. Anything.

He hated lying. He was very good at it, but he still hated it. And everyday was a lie in the life of Sirius Black. It was easier to lie. For, if he told the truth, life would get so much more complicated. Complicated wasn't good for anyone, least of all Sirius.

The truth was that Sirius was in love. With his best friend. The best friend who was dating the most beautiful girl at Hogwarts. Which made things even more complicated, because Sirius had fancied Lily since even before he had fallen for James. Sirius wished that, just for once, he could have a simple life. But trouble seemed to follow him wherever he went.

Sighing deeply, Sirius stumbled back into his bed and drew the covers up to his chin. He squeezed his eyes shut and hoped for sleep to come. He tossed and turned, forbidden thoughts whirling around his tired mind, forcing him to snap his eyes open and jump out from under the covers. It was no use. He couldn't stop thinking about... everything... He shook his head roughly. He needed to stop. It wasn't right. He wasn't supposed to feel like this!

He took a deep breath and turned to dress. There was no doubt in his mind that he was wide awake now. He might as well do something productive. But what exactly? There was always that Potions essay... Sirius snorted. Yeah, right! No matter how desperate he was to distract himself, he wouldn't stoop low enough to homework! Honestly, what was he thinking?? He did need a distraction though. Sirius drummed his fingers on the sideboard and thought intently. Time ticked by slowly and James stirred in his sleep, hiccupping a little. Sirius turned, concerned, but breathed a sigh of relief when James rolled on to his side and continued to snore softly. Sirius smiled gently at the sleeping boy and continued with is thinking. He strolled over to the only window in Gryffindor tower and peered out into the grounds. He could just about make out a tall, lanky figure hurrying from the forbidden forest. Sirius strained his eyes and realised who the lonesome figure was.

An evil grin spreads over Sirius' handsome face. He whipped around and scooped up his belongings of the messy floor. Sprinting to the staircase, a plan formed in his mind. This would help him forget them for a while, at least. Now to catch up with Snape...
