Author's Note:
I have now corrected the dates. The prologue now takes place in July instead of September. I have included dialogue on purpose: I know that dialogue is not used in diaries, but it makes it more entertaining for the reader and helps to illustrate the plot. Thanks to all of you who took the time to review.

July 21

Hello. My name is Hermione Granger. Mum got me this diary earlier this summer and I haven't gotten around to writing it until now. Into this book I will record all my thoughts and all of the events that occur my fifth year as a witch.

I had a wonderful weekend. Ron and Ginny came. Harry couldn't make it though. My parents planned a little party. Nothing much -we had cake shaped like a wizard's hat (Mum and Dad's idea of a wizard food), but no sweets of course (also my parent's idea).

Not much going on with Harry or Ron. Not much going on with anyone. Oh, well. I'll write another day when something happens.

Hello again. We are going on a holiday to Australia in a week or so. But right now I am more excited about going to the Burrow to see the Weasleys. It sounds kind of strange, being more excited about going to see Ron than taking a holiday to Australia. Oh, well. Things like that are strange.

Harry is going to be there too; he is spending the rest of the summer with Ron and his family. Ron says they have a lot of things planned for us to do once we get there. It should be fun to do some real wizard things outside of Hogwarts. I am especially interested in going to the Museum of Merlin, which Mrs. Weasley promised she would take me (I imagine Ron will have a fit over this, though). I have read so much about it and it would be so much fun to go.

Not much is going on here, however. This is a very important year. I have finally started on studying for my OWLs. Mum and Dad said they were thinking about reading some of my books so they could help me study better in school. They say a lot of things like that. "I don't really need any help," I told them. "I can study just fine on my own." After all, I always have before, haven't I?

I'm going to Ron's tomorrow. Mum was helping me pack. "Are you sure you'll be all right on your own?" she asked me.

"I spend the entire school year by myself, Mum. I think I can handle a weekend away," I told her.

"It's just that when I met the Weasleys, they seemed a bit, well, disoriented."

"They're my friends, Mum."

"Yes, but still... I'd like you to keep in touch with me." Mum is so protective of me. She treats me like a five year old, not a fifteen year old. But, oh well. I guess it's just because she loves me.

"Okay, Mum."

I got a letter from Harry today. He told me how much he was looking forward to seeing me. I wrote him back telling him the same thing. I make sure to write to Harry as much as I can. It probably gets very lonely over there, him being all alone with the Dursleys.
