Chapter 1: Enter The Lion, Introducing The Snake

----------------------------------------------

What is it that makes a love story stick in your mind? They all seem to have the same theory. You meet a member of the opposite sex, you talk, you fall in love, and all is happy. This story is a little different. For it isn't just a love story but a story about love. Forbidden love. You meet the member of the opposite sex, you despise them, you rely on them, you fall in love with them, you try not to get killed by associated with them. Mmmm the perks of love.

Enter Marlene Mckinnon. Average girl attending Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Curly blonde hair adorns her shoulders and books are always at her fingertips. She's a prefect and she knows she's smart. Never disobeys the rules and always enforces them. Marlene grew up in a loving home. Her mother and father were almost always there for her. Almost always. Like I mentioned, they did love her very much, but they were aurors and always off doing something for the ministry. Like most students she went home at Christmas break, but she opened her presents alone with nobody there to shout Happy Christmas to her. But she rarely let it show that this tore her up inside, and faked her feelings in the presence of others. Nobody would get her to unlock those secrets and that's how she thought she wanted it.

Like any girl Marlene had her needs, her wants, her fears, and her likes. She wasn't anything spectacular, just perfectly normal. No not even perfectly. Just normal. She loved to read, she hated the sound gum made right when somebody started to chew it, she wanted chocolate, and she needed kisses. Ironic that she rarely got what she would love to have and was always bombarded with things she couldn't stand to deal with.

Fifteen years old and in her fourth year of Hogwarts, this Gryffindor was anything but brave. Was it strange that you might see her at the Three Broomsticks, head propped up on her hand, sitting at the very back, Butterbeer, or more often, Bloodlust in hand. So she drank. Very little, but enough to forget. It really did work like they said. You forgot everything that made you a terrible person. The downside is that you also forgot the things that made you great. Oh, and the terrible hangovers. Just awful. Rember Kids! Don't do drugs, stay away from beer and you will have a dandy year! Can't say the latter was exactly true, but it still wasn't the best choice, her drinking and all. Who cared though? Certainly not her.

"Oh Merlin! Late for class again. I swear I...I...ahh!" a voice shouted, awfully loudly, through the Fourth Year girls dorm of Gryffindor Tower. Soft delicate hand went to a pale forehead and the strain on her face showed evidence that her head was not on her side today.

Pulling her grey knee high's on, Marlene grabbed her shoes, practically tripping the whole way out of the common room. She was the last one out of Gryffindor Tower, as far as she knew, and she was already ten minutes late for Potions. None of the other girls in the dorm had decided to wake her up, which they rarely did. Let's just say that Miss McKinnon wasn't exactly the most loved girl in Hogwarts. Most girls despised her, in fact. If they could make her late for class they would do it, especially if they got to watch Ms. Goody Goody get in trouble for once. Marlene knew they did it on purpose, but she would never say anything. Like I said, not brave. She wouldn't stand up to someone to save her life.

The darkness of the dungeons enveloped her. Why did it seem that no matter how warm, or even burning up the rest of the Castle was on an average summer's day the Dungeons stayed the same temperature. Not sure what that temperature is I will just say Very Very Cold degree's Farenheit. And if that wasn't bad enough, today was not a burning hot, average summer's day. It was a cold winter morning, just after the first snowfall, and her feet went numb just walking through the corridors on her way to class.

"MIZZ MCKINNON! Where, May I ask, have you been?!" a cold voice boomed through the classroom. Marlene froze. She had tried to sneak in as quietly as possible, but professors really do have eyes in the back of their head. He had to have had them to have seen her come in with his back turned like it was. Walking slowely across the room, the professor ended up at Marlene's desk and looked over to her, still by the door, as if daring her to continue to it. "Come on. Take your seat. Now that you've joined us I'm sure you can tell me if the equation on the board for the Nightengale potion is correct or wrong," he said, a smirk evident on his lips.

"It's false," she said, eyeing it and finding the mistake that he had made.

"Wrong, Mizz McKinnon. The equation is very right. Maybe if you made it to class on time you would know that."

"I think your wrong. It appears to be incorrect," she said, pointing to the place she thought he was mistaken.

"Now your telling me how to do my work? Your late to class as it is so just sit and watch, because you have just failed this assignment," he said, before turning to walk back to his desk.

"You can't fail me for being smarter than you!" she yelled, clasping her hand over her mouth, but it was too late, she had already said it.

More sleep good. Very good. Keeps students from blurting out the truth...yes the truth...about their superiors. Marlene made a mental note of this and promised her self she would be in bed by ten that night, except for one little problem. "DETENTION!"

Introducing Evan Rosier. Quite the opposite of average actually. Come to think of it, he's Marlene's exact opposite. I might as well not even explain him, but since I have so much space to fill. Evan got into trouble. He smiled to his professor's faces, just to later talk behind thier backs. He stayed out past curfew, and he played with the heads of many innocent, or not so innocent, Slytherin girls. Purebred perfection, a superiorly engineered machine couldn't do a better job at being a complete prat than one Mister Evan Rosier. His parents were deatheaters, as was he, and always owled him with plans for new attacks and such. The usual Deatheater business. No matter how many owls they sent, though, they couldn't be further away. As much as he had wished for parents while he was growing up, he could never have them. They were his mentors. Never did one such as him deserve parents. Or so he told himself while he was a child.

The nanny tucked him in at night, the nanny fed him, the nanny watched him take his first steps, and she was the one who was there to congratulate him when he received his Hogwarts letter. Who could ever want parents when you could have a nanny, right? Was it so wrong for him to want a normal life? Yes, and so deep inside he wished for release, while on the outside he smiled with indecency. Most thought of him as candy coated, but deep inside the poison dwelled, when it was, in fact, quite the opposite. He was horrible for show, but if you got passed that you could unlock all his feelings. But who would ever want to touch poison, even if it meant there was a suprise underneith. And nobody did.

Evan drank too, of course. For reasons the same and reasons different. He could get away with it in his dorm though, and was rarely seen at the Three Broomsticks unless he just wanted to get away. One thing about it was that he wasn't as sorry about drinking as Marlene was. He didn't feel like it was that terrible a thing. Maybe he just didn't want to think differently. Don't forget kiddies, beer before liquor will make you sicker. But liquor before beer and you're in the clear! All in all, he couldn't see why people made such a big fuss about it. He did alot of things he wasn't supposed to, like drinking was going to make it any worse.

Evan entered the potions classroom. The room was bare and nobody, save for the professor and himself, was there. "Aww Mr. Rosier. Glad to have you. Not glad to have you at this current time. As much as I hate to assign you this, you do know, whether I like it or not, that being out after hours and being caught by a prefect, earns you a detention," the professor sighed, standing from his desk. "But maybe you can help out. I have a Gryffindor coming in also, and somebody needs to keep her in line." Smirking, both the professor and Evan turned their gaze to the door when a light knock was heard. Pushing open the cold wooden door, a young girl stepped in. Her normally curled hair, was straight and pulled back in a pony-tail. Keeping her in line outta be worlds of fun, Evan thought to himself, as a smirk crossed his face. "And you must be the young lady with whom I have the pleasure of spending my evening with."
