Chapter 1: Summer

August 15, 1977

Dear Diary,

I can't believe my sister, we have been as close as we could be just seeing each other every summer and Christmas. I didn't think she had any problem with me being a witch. Now that she is with Vernon Dursley, she says she will no longer acknowledge me as her sister. She called me a "freak." All because this boy thinks that he could get a bad reputation for being with a witch's sister. Honestly, haven't I told her enough about the Statue of Secrecy. I don't understand how she can turn on me for a no-good muggle. It is not right. I can't wait to be back at Hogwarts where I don't have to think about my sister anymore. Only 17 days left!

Lily Evans

Lily closed her diary. This had been one long summer for her. She had received her letter from Hogwarts the previous day stating that she was Head Girl and James Potter (of all people) was Head Boy. Is Dumbledore trying to torture me? She thought hopelessly. Spending time with that boy was not something she enjoyed. He loved teasing her, and acting like he liked her. She could see through the act. She wasn't about to date James Potter. She knew he could never be faithful. With all his pranks and adventures, how could he ever be serious. She wondered if she would ever find a guy who understood her. She'd only dated once in her 6th year. It went all wrong. He was insensitive and even expected her to pay for dinner at the Three Broomsticks.

Her thoughts rambled for what felt like hours until she finally fell asleep.

James Potter and Sirius Black were talking to Mr. and Mrs. Potter about the dangers they were going through in their jobs. Being Aurors was dangerous with You-Know-Who steadily growing stronger. Mr. and Mrs. Potter were about to go spy on suspected Death Eaters and the boys were worried about what was going to happen. James loved his parents with his whole heart and would be lost without them there. He was somewhat used to his parents having to spy on them, but usually it was from afar. This time they were supposed to take a Polyjuice potion and mingle with them. It was a much more dangerous task.

Mr. Potter said, "James, your mother and I will be fine. We are trained in going undercover; the Polyjuice Potion hasn't failed yet. Don't worry. We will be back in the morning. You boys need to get some sleep and we need to be apparating to work."

James replied, "Okay Dad, but wake me up if anything bad happens to either of you. I want to know immediately. I'm not sure I'll even be able to sleep."

"Don't be silly, James, or I'll make you go to sleep," his mom threatened.

"No, No Mom, that's alright, I'll sleep," James said quickly.

Mrs. Potter smirked knowingly. Before leaving, Mr. Potter promised he would be in contact should something happen. Times were hard, but most of the Wizarding world was not aware how bad the situation was becoming.

Back in James' room, he brought out his album of Lily Evans. He wanted her to be his girlfriend. 'She thinks I'm joking with her. How can I get her to take me seriously? I really care about her.' He doubted it.

"I'm sorry about Evans, Prongs. You better act different toward her this year, because you are going to be around her all the time as Head Boy."

James admitted, "I know, I'm actually nervous about it. I mean spending time with Lily, that is nerve wrecking to me. I wish she'd just realize how much I care for her."

"Well, she blind if she can't see you love her, it's pretty obvious."

James sighed, "I don't know what to do."

"I don't either. So, what do you figure we should do at the Opening Feast? It is our last year so it's got to be something exciting!"

James absently said, "Not sure, we'll have to give it some thought."
