Chapter 1-Meet Surika Parker
“And the forest is strictly off limits to any and every student living here at the Institute.” This was the last of the extensive rules read to Surika Parker,15, as she was being settled into her new home at the Fairview Mutant Institute. She was a pretty girl, with her 5 foot 9 inch height, nearly perfect curved figure, long, jet black hair, and stunning, bright green eyes. Yes, very pretty, but also very insecure.
Her family all dead, and she being the only survivor of a brutal murder, left her very insecure. She hardly trusted anyone, and she was equipped with a nasty, flaring temper. It was a surprise to her that she even allowed herself to be taken in by these people. She preferred her life of solitude with her only friends, a beautiful white Mustang named Moonglow, and a majestic golden-orange Bengal tiger named Moses. She enjoyed living in the forests and being so close to nature. Or at least she thought she did.
“Why?” Was her response to the spoken rule. Jennifer Harmon, 18, regarded her question briefly. “Because the forest here is dangerous. No one who enters it makes it out.” For a moment, Surika thought about this response. She had a sure feeling that this, Jennifer Harmon, was lying to her. She crossed her arms and shot a challenging glance at her “superior.”
“Really? Dangerous, huh? And just what makes this forest so dangerous?” Surika challenged. Jennifer frowned at Surika’s smart-aleck question. “There are strange things in there. No one has seen them, because no one has been STUPID enough to break the rules and go in! And if I catch YOU in there, I’ll make sure you are reported promptly and punished!” And with an arrogant toss of her head, Jennifer turned on her heel and strode from the room.
Surika gritted her teeth irritably as she struggled to gain control of her temper. How dare she talk to her like that! This, Jennifer Harmon, may have had a three-year age advantage on her, but that didn’t give Jennifer the right to tell her what to do! Surika Parker took orders from no one, and very shortly, Jennifer would have that known to her.
“We’ll just see about that…” Surika muttered to herself and plopped onto her bed.
