Author's Note:
A/N: This fic is based on one of my favorite songs, "Hold On", by Good Charlotte. To all of you out there going through tough times- just hold on. When you think you're so low that you can't get any lower, then the only way is up.

Lily Evans woke up in her Hogwarts dormitory feeling worse than usual.

If that was even possible.

She got out of her comfortable four-poster bed, taking no notice of the, time, which was about two pm, or of the other girls in her dormitory.

She padded softly over to the window in her black cotton pyjamas, and stared out of it miserably, not looking at anything in particular.

"This world, this world is cold,

But you don't, you don't have to go"

She felt so hopeless and alone.

Sure, she had friends.

But they weren't real ones- she couldn't talk to them, not about anything important, anyway.

They tended to all stick to safe topics- clothes, boys, music, and never really spoke up their lives at home, their lives out of Hogwarts.

Lily didn't even have a best friend, unlike most of the rest of her group of friends, who all had someone to lean on when things got really bad for them.

Lily didn't have that with anyone- she was too scared to let people get close to her.

"You're feelin' sad, you're feelin' lonely

And no one seems to care"

There was no one for her to talk to.

Her mother had passed away from cancer when Lily was only nine, leaving Lily with her father.

Her father used to be her best friend, the most lovable, teddy bear like person she knew, but gradually after her mother died, things had changed... he became some sort of monster, scaring Lily so much that she built up imaginary walls around herself, not letting anyone else get in.

"Your mother's gone and your father hits you,

This pain you can not bear"

But there was nothing she could do, she just had to keep suffering, hurting, and wondering if the unbearable pain would all be worth it in the end.

Lily shifted her gaze to the deserted Quidditch stands out on the grounds.

They were so high... nobody could survive a fall like that...

She could just go out there...

Climb to the top...

And let herself fall...

The pain would all be over in seconds...

She probably wouldn't even be missed...

No. She couldn't think like this. It was stupid.

There were other people out there much worse off than she was.

She was being selfish.

"But we all bleed the same way as you do,

And we all have the same things to go through,

Hold on

If you feel like letting go

Hold on

It gets better than you know

No, she was just being selfish and self-pitying.

She needed to think about something else.

How about the day ahead?

Oh, how she dreaded it.

Putting on the same fake smile, fake happiness, fake life.

One day seemed like an eternity.

"Your days, you say they're way to long,

And your nights,

You can't sleep at all

Hold on"

Lily felt so...empty.

Soulless.

She spent her days and Hogwarts going in and out of classes, perfecting her fake smile, making sure nobody saw through her, listening to her friends talk about their wonderful lives.

She needed something to fill that empty space.

Something...someone...

But what? Or who...?

"You're no sure what you're waiting for,

but you don't want to know more

you're not sure what you're waiting for

but you don't want to know more"

Not too far away, James Potter was sitting in his dormitory miserably, staring out the window.

He couldn't sleep again.

Nobody knew what it was like to be him... Nobody knew... Nobody understood.

Everyone saw him as James Potter- Harold Potter's son- the popular, smart, confident guy of the school.

The one everyone loved.

But really he was James Potter- insecure, nervous, and living his life to please others.

All he wanted to do was leave.

Leave his life, leave the school, leave his friends... He just wanted all his problems to go.

But of course, that was stupid. Other people had worse problems than him.

"We all bleed the same way as you do,

And we all have the same things to go through"

He stared aimlessly out at the lake.

If only he could just go out there...

Plunge into its freezing depths...

And leave the world forever...

Then he could be free...

"Hold on,

If you feel like letting go

Hold on,

It gets better than you know,

Don't stop looking ,

You're one step closer,

Don't stop searching its not over

Hold on"

James' life felt empty.

What did he have to life for?

Family?

Well, he didn't really have much of one besides Sirius- his parents were barely ever home.

A career?

Well, he had to be an Auror.

There was no doubt about it- he was a Potter, and Potters had been Aurors for generations.

He didn't even want to be one. But he had to, his father had informed him of that.

Love?

No, all of his girlfriends so far had just been materialistic, slutty girls, who he knew he could never fall in love with.

He needed someone, something else.

"What are you looking for?

What are you waiting for?

Do you know what you're doing to me?

Go ahead...

What are you waiting for?"

But dying was not the answer, and he knew it. He had his friends to live for. And, maybe one day, he would find what he was looking for.

"Hold on

If you feel like letting go
Hold on

It gets better than you know
Don't stop looking

You're one step closer
Don't stop searching

It's not over
Hold on

If you feel like letting go
Hold on

It gets better than you know
Hold on"

Later that day

Lily walked down the deserted hall, staring at the floor miserably.

James walked past the other way, staring straight ahead.

"Hey Lily," he said softly as he walked.

"Hey James," she mumbled, and continued to walk down the hall.

Hold on
