Chapter 22

Lucius Malfoy and his wife Narcissa arrived at the hospital wing, only to find that the door was locked. After banging on the door for a minute or so, it opened. A very angry Madam Pomfrey was standing in the doorway. Mr. Malfoy barged in, brushing past her rather roughly and rudely. "Where's my son?" he asked, in a loud and authoritative voice.

"Well," Madam Pomfrey said haughtily, "if you would calm yourself down, I would tell you that he is in that bed over there," she said, pointing to a bed on the right side of the hospital wing.

Mr. Malfoy brushed past her, without so much as one word of thanks, and went to the bed she'd indicated, which was enclosed behind a curtain. His wife followed morosely behind him, a solemn look on her face.

When they reached the bed Madam Pomfrey had indicated, Mr. Malfoy ripped open the curtain and entered. After his wife had followed him inside, she slid the curtain noiselessly shut. What Mr. Malfoy saw before him made him want to heavily curse his son into oblivion. There was a murderous look on his face as he stared at the scene in front of him.

His son Draco was lying in the hospital bed, everything below his waist concealed beneath the stark white sheet that covered the bed. Sitting beside him, on top of the covers, was Ginny Weasley. They were holding hands tightly and gazing into each other's eyes, as if there was nowhere else in the world they would rather be than in the hospital wing together.

A yell of outrage issued from Mr. Malfoy's mouth, enlightening Draco and Ginny to the fact that Draco's parents were around the curtain, very close to them, and surveying the scene.

Lucius was giving Ginny a murderous glare. "Get out!" he shouted at her, making her jump about a foot off the bed.

"Don't talk to her that way!" exclaimed Draco, his voice loaded with anger. He sat up a little straighter on his bed.

"I will talk to this blood traitor FILTH anyway I like," Lucius exclaimed angrily, an authoritative and dangerous sounding tone to his voice. "Now what the hell is this that we hear about you... impregnating... this... thing with your bastard spawn?" He didn't glance at Ginny when he said this, but everyone within the curtain knew exactly who he was talking about. This time, it was Draco's turn to have a murderous glare on his face.

"You can say whatever you want about me, Father," Draco said, spitting out the last word with contempt, "but don't you dare come around me and insult my future children and... and my future wife. If she'll have me, of course?" he asked sheepishly, looking over at Ginny.

His attention, however, was immediately drawn away form her and, this time, towards his mother as she exclaimed loudly, "NO! NO! I WILL NOT HAVE IT! THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN! I EXPRESSELY FORBID IT!"

"Well, Mother, fortunately the decision is not yours to make."

"We will disown you!" Narcissa continued. "You will be cut off from everything - including your inheritance! You will no longer be considered our son, or a Malfoy, in our eyes! I swear it!" She paused for a moment, seemingly to take a breath from her tirade. "Your children will have no place in our family."

"Thank God!" Draco exclaimed. "I don't think I could bear it if you wanted anything to do with the children. You and I have very different ideas on how children should be raised."

Lucius Malfoy seemed finally to have found his voice again, because he said, "You're making a huge mistake by even considering this. You disgust me, and you make me sick. I am ashamed to call you my son. I am ashamed that you even share my blood." He said all this in a low and even tone, but that was not all he had to say.

"I can stand here and tell you exactly what will happen when those children are born. You mark my words - they will be stolen from you on the Dark Lord's orders to be raised as Death Eaters, ready to join his ranks as soon as he feels them able."

"You would know, wouldn't you?" Draco said, the murderous look still on his face. "Because you believe that you're the one Voldemort would send to do the job. Am I right?" There was silence for a moment. Draco turned toward Ginny then, whose face displayed a look both of anger and intense fear, and placed a gentle hand on her arm. "Gin, why don't you go rest up in your bed? I need to have a little... private chat with my parents." Ginny gave him an understanding smile (thought the look of fear and anger did not completely leave her face), and bent down to give him a kiss before exiting the curtained hospital bed.

After Ginny was out of sight, Draco waited a few more moments to make sure she was out of earshot before slowly getting out of his bed. He faced his parents, crossed his arms, and said, "I will tell you this right now, Lucius, and make sure you understand every word because I am only going to say this once. If you or any of your Death Eater cohorts ever come within even twenty feet of myself, Ginny, or the children ever again, I'll make it my personal duty to make sure that whoever it is, dies the most lingering and painful death known to Wizardkind. Mark my words, because I swear it. Now get out of here immediately before I call Dumbledore down here to personally escort you off the property. I'm sure he wouldn't mind in the least once he hears what you've just told me."

The three of them glared at each other, though silently this time. After a few minutes of silent but murderous glares, Lucius turned to his wife and said, "Come, Narcissa. We must depart." Still glaring at his son, Lucius exited through the curtain, followed by his wife.

Draco followed his parents, but stopped in the aisle between the two rows of beds, crossing his arms in front of his chest. He watched as his parents passed six of the Weasleys (all with slightly stunned looks on their faces, having obviously heard the exchange between the three Malfoys), exited through it, and were gone.

There was silence in the hospital wing. No one said a word. After several moments, Draco went the rest of the way across the aisle and disappeared behind the curtain enclosing Ginny's bed.
