Chapter 08

Draco and Ginny left the Room of Requirement separately, from different exits. Ginny left through the main entrance, and Draco left through an exit on the opposite side of the room that would take him to somewhere on the third floor. Before they left, however, they shared a long and lingering kiss.

"Meet me in the Entrance Hall when you're done dealing with Potter," Draco said, taking her hands in his. "I want to show you the Slytherin common room."

"Is that allowed?" Ginny asked, a slightly surprised look on her face.

"I don't give a shit," Draco said, smiling. "Have I really ever cared much about the rules?"

"No, not visibly."

"And besides, do you really think what we just did here is allowed?"

"Well, you know," Ginny said. "It's never mentioned in the rulebook."

"True."

Draco gave her one last kiss, this time just a quick peck, and told her goodbye.

"For now," she said in answer, giving him a seductive wink.

Walking down the corridors and up the stairwells on her way to Gryffindor Tower, Ginny was all-the-while trying to figure out exactly what she was going to say to Harry when she saw him in the common room. She was hoping she could get everything out that she wanted to say to him before she started to yell. She also hoped she wouldn't have an audience (at least not much of one, anyway).

After awhile, she reached the Fat Lady, who was snoring noisily in her frame. Ginny stood a few feet away from it, her nervousness almost getting the best of her. For a full five minutes, she almost walked away, thinking she couldn't go through with what she knew she had to do.

But, like she was thinking, she had to do it. She had to. She couldn't just draw away from the situation, like a coward, acting like it would resolve itself. And Harry obviously wasn't going to do anything about it. So it was left to her.

She walked resolutely up to the Fat Lady's portrait, and cleared her throat loudly. The Fat Lady didn't even stir, so she cleared her throat again. This time, it worked. The Fat Lady blearily opened one eye and stared for a moment at Ginny, as if trying to get her form into focus.

"Password?" she asked sleepily.

"Um... frog spawn," Ginny said, her voice a tiny bit shaky with nervousness.

The portrait hole swung silently open on its hinges, revealing the entrance to Gryffindor Tower. She stood there for a moment longer, still mentally weighing the pros and cons of stepping into the common room. Before she could change her mind, however, she reached up and pulled herself inside. The door to the portrait hole closed silently behind her.

The common room was, for the most part, empty. Coincidentally enough, the only person in the room was Harry Potter himself. He was sitting in one of the comfortable armchairs by the fireplace. There was a fire going in the grate, and Harry was just relaxing, staring into the fire patiently, as if waiting for someone to appear in it. And maybe he was.

The floor in the common room was carpeted, so Ginny was able to walk silently towards Harry without him even knowing she was in the room. She walked until she was standing right behind the chair he was sitting in. She stood behind the armchair, not making any noise for a moment, until she got a last minute burst of nerves. She walked as confidently as possible around the chair until she stood in front of it, right in front of Harry. She crossed her arms and stared at him, waiting for him to say something. He ignored her, however, continued to stare into the fire, and said nothing. All that could be heard was the quiet crackling of the fire.

After a minute or so (Ginny very annoyed now), she broke the deafening silence. "I'm leaving you," she said to Harry, not quite looking at him but a little off to the left, her arms still crossed.

"I was wondering when you were going to tell me that," Harry said, still not looking at her.

"Oh, were you?" Ginny said. "You weren't going to break up with me, even after I found out about your affair?"

"I would call it an affair, per se; it's not like we're married. And, besides, what would be the point of breaking up with you? Doesn't the saying go 'two is better than one'?"

"I shouldn't expect anything less from you, you scumbag." Ginny uncrossed her arms and turned to go.

"So that's it?" Harry asked, getting up from the armchair. "You're just going to leave me and go single, then, huh?"

"No," Ginny said, crossing her arms again and turning back to face him. "I'm not single, actually. I'll have you know that... I had a very good night last night."

"Oh, and you expect me to believe that? Who would dare to do anything with you when they know you've been dating me?"

"Oh, you'd be surprised, but the person I was with last night doesn't give a damn what you think." Ginny had a smirk on her face. She knew that even though Harry looked calm to the naked eye, she was really getting to him.

Harry crossed his arms, his posture stiffening just slightly, as if he couldn't believe that there was actually someone out there who didn't give a damn what he thought. "And who might that be, Ginny?"

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you," Ginny said, her smirk getting a little bigger.

"Why don't you just tell me already," Harry said, his voice rising to a slightly angry and annoyed tone.

"And why should I? You never told me who you were with, or that you were with anyone else at all. I had to walk in on the two of you and find out for myself."

"Fine. Don't tell me. I don't really give a shit." Harry turned around, but he didn't walk away, as if he was still waiting for her to tell him who the mysterious guy was. Ginny was happy to oblige.

"It's Draco Malfoy."

Harry turned around, blatant disbelief on his face, and stared into her smug and smirking face. "What did you just say?"

It was at that moment, though neither of them noticed, that Ron chose to make his way down from the seventh-year-boys' dormitory. He had come down just in time to hear Ginny Harry it had been Draco Malfoy, and Harry's response. Seriously curious about what their conversation was about, but not wanting to butt in just in case they stopped talking about it, he stayed hidden around the corner on the stairs.

"It's Draco Malfoy. That's what I just said." She still had a very smug smirk on her face, almost reminiscent of Malfoy's himself, and she didn't look like she was going to lose it anytime soon. Harry just looked furious. "I'm leaving you for Draco Malfoy, and I for one think I made an excellent choice. Don't you?"

Harry was so furious that he almost couldn't speak, but he did manage to get out (through gritted teeth, no less), "And why the hell do you say that?"

"Oh, you know." She gave him one more little sly smile before saying, "Because I had him last night and - I must say - the sex I got from him last night - and this morning, by the way - was much better than anything I've ever gotten from you."

Ron was stunned by what he was hearing, but he forced himself to stay silent and in his hiding place. The next thing he heard changed his relationship with his then-best-friend forever.

Harry strode the couple of steps dividing him and Ginny, stood in front of her for a moment, then slapped her hard across the face.
