Chapter 18: Some Things Change & Others Remain the Same

Severus took over ministering to Erszhebet. From that moment on he would never entrust her care to anyone else entirely if he could help it, the only notable exception perhaps being Madam Pomfrey. So deep was the distrust within him now born of the intricate web of deception, secrets and lies. If anyone was going to care for Erszhebet, it would be him.

He gently wiped away the heavy beads of sweat from her forehead and neck with one of the cloths Marilyn had brought as he sat on the edge of the sofa. Erszhebets face was flushed and her breathing ragged. Her hair and clothes were already soaking wet.

"Why is she not coming round?" asked Severus in a stressed tone. "She did the last time..."

"This is the transfer of power at work now," replied Livia in a matter-of-fact tone as she sat on a chair near Erszhebet's head. "She is at last coming into the fullness that is her birthright. Normally with our kind this would have happened when she was twenty-one. Thirty-eight is rather late. And she does not have the benefit of any...training, if that helps to understand."

"Thirty-eight?" asked Madam Pomfrey in shock. "She doesn't look a day over 25, maybe even 23 or 21 at the bare minimum."

"Also a mark of our kind," replied Livia. "We do not bear age like you Wizards and Witches do. You may live long lives, but your age shows. Erszhebet will still have the bloom of youth even when she 'has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel'."

Livia chuckled. She recalled seeing Erszhebet with another female who must have been a friend at one of the outdoor cafes in the West Village last summer. Her niece had used that expression and the idea of it made Livia laugh.

Severus frowned; the familiar vertical line between his brows deepening as he did so. How would Erszhebet even want to be with him when he was old and withered with age and she herself was not. After all it was only four years that separated them in age then given that he was 42.

"Severus," said Livia picking up on his thoughts. "You may have noticed that you yourself have developed some rather unique abilities since...connecting...with my niece. Unique abilities that are also the mark of our kind."

Professor Snape cringed inside at hearing his name from this woman's lips. He may have to get along with her for the sake of propriety. But there was no law which said he had to like it or her.

"Yes." He replied blandly.

"As her consort there may be other such developments. You yourself will not age as you would have before, that is certain."

At this Severus' dark head snapped up.

"That...then...it is true. What I have read..." he said with a frown.

"Yes," replied Livia.

"What, Severus? What have you read?" asked Poppy.

There was silence as Severus was trying to take this all in. He had not had sufficient time to think about the implications to himself once he discovered the truth about his beloved.

"Because Erszhebet has chosen Professor Snape as her life partner, and because they have also - mated, for the wont of a better word, Severus will not grow old while she stays young. Their life expectancy will be the same as will the aging process," explained Livia.

"Are you saying - that Severus will become like you because they have had...sexual intercourse??" asked Madame Pomfrey incredulously.

"Not one of us no, but something similar," said Livia. My, these Witches and Wizards were still so ignorant, she thought.

"But yes Severus has undergone a sort of transformation already as he himself has noticed. They have already had intercourse, several times in fact although just the once would have sufficed, to confirm their union. The point is that only because Erszhebet has chosen him as her life partner will he continue to see marked developments in himself. Had Erszhebet not chosen him and had he not mated with her giving his consent to the union, Professor Snape would then still age as your sort do - sexual intercourse or no. Marital Consummation is not our way as it is yours. Many of us often do not take a conjugal mate as you do...life partners; yes, that is a much more fitting way of putting it. The fact that Severus and Erszhebet are Twin Souls - well that will be interesting. One never knows what happens in these cases so rare are they."

"Merlin's Beard!!" said Poppy. "That is outrageous!"

Livia sighed with exasperation. "Surely you are aware of Sex Magic? Sexuality does have its own unique magical properties like everything else after all. Whether you accept the notion or not makes no difference, though as a Mediwitch you should know better than most. Even the ordinary act of sex between non-magical people creates bonds and is magical in its own way - this is why it is often so very difficult to get someone 'out of your system' as they say. Bonds can remain long after a relationship has ended. One can end up having connections to others that are better let go of. It may be just sex to you or to them but it is still magic.

Without the knowledge of such things this is not so easily rectified. Just listen to the average Wizard or even a 'Muggle', as you hear them speaking of someone they just cannot get over or of concocting some mad plan to brew a love potion or do a bit of love magic for all the wrong reasons. I could make a fortune just by performing love magic and divinations alone if I allowed my ethics about such matters to fall to the wayside."

"That is not the sort of thing that is part of the curriculum at Hogwarts," sniffed Professor McGonagall sounding every inch the Deputy Headmistress that she was. Such things were not spoken of in polite society.

"Then perhaps you should given the shocking ignorance displayed here today," said Livia. "No wonder the liaisons of your kind and non-magical people are so fraught with problems. Sexual education does have its place even in the Wizarding world.

Stop being so hypocritical and teach that alongside your love charms and potions; they are a form of Sex Magic whether you admit it or not! There is no point in providing the tools without the ethics and guidance that goes along with them."

Severus chuckled softly to himself as he gave a slight nod to Livia. It was not everyday that Professor McGonagall and Madam Pomfrey were put soundly in their places. Erszhebet was very much like her aunt. Both were mavericks and very progressive in their thinking. It was not a bad idea actually. He himself had always refused to teach love potions even though they were part of the mandated British National Wizarding Curriculum. Severus agreed with Livia - 100%. A first for him.

Livia saw it and gave a nod back. At least one of them had some sense. Thank Goddess it was her future nephew-in-law.

Tense silence.

"And what if they have a child?" asked Poppy not trying to be polite. "What about that?"

"Then that child will be considered as one of his or her mother's kind," replied Severus matter-of-factly as he regained his wits. "Their bloodlines trump ours; not that it should matter."

"Sounds dodgy if you ask me," said Poppy. She couldn't think why anyone in their right mind would want to bring such creatures into the world, especially the Wizarding world.

Severus glowered menacingly at Poppy. "I didn't and I suggest you keep your ignorance to yourself, Poppy, this is neither the time nor place - there is enough of that sort of thing within my own House and our World. Do I need to remind you of the last two wars that were fought over rubbish like this? I don't need this from those that are supposed to be my friends." She was walking on thin ice. Very thin ice.

"No one has asked you or cares about what you think of our kind, or the children my niece will have Ms. Pomfrey," said Livia dismissively. However, she was pleased to see that Severus would protect her niece even from his friends if necessary.

Shocked silence.

That comment and Severus' had shut Madam Pomfrey up.

"It is no light matter to become involved with one of our kind," said Livia. "It would come as no surprise to know that over the ages many of yours and even non-magical folk have sought life partnerships with us solely because of what such a liaison would bring them, particularly with regards to power and youth."

"Well, that most certainly is not the case here," said Severus defensively. "I had no idea what she was! So much was going on I could not think to make any connection even though her name sounded familiar to me. I just thought Erszhebet was another one of us the more I got to know of her, although I could see that she was unique because of her remarkable demonstrations of ability. I will not deny that such an alliance could have its uses, but I was committed to Erszhebet long before I knew of such things. This is not about power or ability - though normally it would be very attractive for a Slytherin such as myself. This is about something more important to me - I will love, protect and care for any children we have just as I do their mother!"

That was a startling admission from Severus Snape - that he of all people would freely admit publicly that he loved and cared and would continue to do so.

"Very true, Severus, I know that you are an honorable man and most sincere. You do love my niece though it is not easy for you to feel or express yourself. Emotions are difficult for you and I do appreciate the openness you have displayed today, as unintentional as it was. You have your own secrets which must be revealed to her in the fullness of time." replied Livia.

"You are one of the few who has given your heart and your life freely to one of our kind without expectation, in spite of what you now know. Your partnership with my niece will aid you with your own personal growth and development. And I can assure you that your children will always be happy and comfortable in the knowledge that both of their parents love each other and want and love them."

"What if he changes his mind?" asked Poppy. "What if Severus decides it's inappropriate and walks away from it all?" Severus was out of his mind to go through with this madness and continue to have intercourse with that...thing, she thought.

"Then he returns to his normal life as befits one of your kind," replied Livia. "And his age and abilities will be reflected accordingly. That is if my niece prevents myself or her father from killing him especially if there are children involved. However, that is a moot point. It is not in the professor's nature to behave in such a foul manner and neither will ever leave the other. Their relationship is what we all dream of when we speak of soul connections. And I can assure you, Ms. Pomfrey, that your colleague is most definitely not out of his mind and my niece is not some 'thing'! You don't have to like her or their relationship; but the least you could do is show her some respect after the kindness and respect that she has given you!"

Silence.

"As it stands," said Livia as she blanked Madam Pomfrey, "It will be interesting to see what your offspring will be like, Severus. There are some remarkable abilities that can come to the fore from the mating of Wizards and Witches with our kind. However, our abilities are remarkable enough in and of themselves.

The bloodlines of Witches and Wizards, particularly purebloods, add a whole new dimension. It largely depends on the lineage of that parent. But you can see it will be remarkable. Quite remarkable, as Erszhebet herself is."

Severus' head snapped around and his black eyes narrowed as he looked at Livia.

"I had noticed that as of yet there was no mention of Severina's mother," he said. "Are you suggesting that her mother is a Witch - a pureblood Witch?" Severus had almost spat when he said the word 'mother'.

"It is not a suggestion, Severus, it is a fact," said Livia.

"Merlin's Beard!" mumbled Poppy under her breath. "Can this get any worse?"

"And just who is this woman?! Where is she from?" hissed Severus menacingly. Oh how he would love to know. He had a few questions he would definitely like to put to her. Like what the hell was she thinking to leave her child in the hands of such abusers, such vermin, such filth?

Why had she not accepted the risks personally for the child she had sired and brought into the world; a child who was innocent and did not ask to be what she was or to be born? Why had she not and loved and protected her child? Why had she not taken her child back into her own care when surely she must have realized her child was the victim of systematic violence and sexual abuse? Erszhebet had not needed to tell him the rest. Severus had deduced it for himself and it had not changed how he saw her or what he felt for her. Erszhebet's mother would be lucky to survive the inquisition when he got through with her. She would beg for the mercy that death could bring - the Unforgivables' illegality be damned.

"That rather delicate matter is not up for discussion at the moment, Professor Snape," said Livia darkly. "I suggest you drop that particular line of questioning as well as those rather dark thoughts of yours. There will be no such machinations or recriminations - is that understood? I appreciate your love and support for my niece. Goddess knows she needs it. However, there are more constructive ways of confronting a problem. If we resort to the ways of Dark Wizards to solve our problems then we are no better than those we are fighting against."

Poppy and Minerva could only guess at what their colleague was thinking. Knowing him as well as they did it did not take a genius to work it out.

Severus glowered with anger. If there was a hell he would have suggested that Erszhebet's mother could burn in it. Damn her. He hoped that as long as she lived she never knew peace.

"Things are not so simple, Severus," said Livia aloud as she answered his thoughts. "And I can assure you, she did not ever know peace."

Severus sighed exasperatedly as he turned his attention back to his partner. Gods it was maddening not to be able to keep his thoughts to himself. So much for Occlumency.

"Get used to it, Severus," said Livia with a smile as she answered his thoughts again. "You should be by now."

Severus rolled his eyes and tried not to smirk.

"I will ease your misery by telling you that there are techniques that our kind uses that are similar to the Occlumency and Legilimens techniques of Wizards, but much more powerful and effective," said Livia. "You will be instructed alongside my niece in those and other things."

"Mmmmm....Sev...Severus," moaned Erszhebet as shebegan to stir just a bit.

Severus started to use his wand to give her some invigorating energy, and Livia stopped him.

"No," she said as she lowered his arm with slight touch her hand. "That is the way of your kind. Remember what she is. She must come out of it as is the way of our kind. She has to grow into the power she now has and those that have lain dormant inside her for so long."

Merlin's Beard, Livia had a surprisingly strong grip. Severus felt like his arm would snap like a matchstick even though she had barely touched it.

"uuuuuunnnnnngggggghhhh...SSS...ssss...SSSevvverussss," moaned Erszhebet quietly in distress though she had not regained consciousness fully. "hhhhhh...HHHHHeeeeelllllllpppppp."

She looked like she was in pain, tremendous pain. Severus connected with her deeply and yes indeed she was. He himself almost doubled over from the feeling of it and pulled back from her. It would do her no good if he passed out from her pain. And that was saying something considering all of the curses, torture and hexes he'd had to withstand from Voldemort and his Death Eaters over the years.

Livia thought for the most fleeting of moments as she observed Severus. She was glad to see him acting like a Bathory. He would do well - quite well.

"Severus, take your left hand and place it over her scar with the fingers like so," said Livia as she demonstrated with her own. "And take your right hand and place it over the top of her head... where the crown is like this." She demonstrated with her right hand how his should go.

Severus did as he was instructed.

"Now," instructed Livia, "think of your purpose...what is it that you aim to do - what is it that you wish for her from the depths of your being?"

Severus thought about it clearly. He wanted to heal Erszhebet. He wanted her pain to go away and he wanted her to regain consciousness. Severus did not want her to die from or be lost in whatever this was that had taken hold; he wanted to help her help herself with all of his being. Heart-to-Heart; Soul-to-Soul.

As soon as he had these thoughts there was a rich golden light that pulsed through Severus and went into Erszhebet. First golden, then violet, blue, golden again and finally silvery white. The light then came out through Erszhebet and back to Severus and then back again to her.

The light was surrounding them both and invigorating the etheric cords and their human energy fields - their auras. Severus was healing Erszhebet using his own energy field just as Livia had intended; as she herself had done earlier.

Livia looked triumphant yet again. The power between the two lovers was awe-inspiring and served to underscore the fact that their union should be - regardless of what anyone else now felt about it.

"You wanted to be able to heal her as you will never totally entrust her care to another; you love her and protect her that much, Severus," said Livia. "The Goddess and God must be in agreement with such a worthy and noble ambition. Be careful what you wish for, Professor Snape. Remember the old Muggle adage 'From Your Lips to God's Ears'."

Severus looked at Livia in silence.

"One last thing I will say Severus, is that you should always remember, that it was you that she called on," said Livia. "Always remember that it is your name that came from her lips this time and before and no one else's. There is a reason for that; in your heart you know why that is."

Severus frowned.

"It will make sense to you...sooner than you think," said Livia as she dropped the matter.

As Severus looked on Erszhebet began to stir. Her eyelids began to flutter and she gave a slight sigh - almost a sigh of relief. Whatever he had done had worked. He looked at her long dark lashes fluttering with the effort she was putting into regaining consciousness.

"Severus," she sighed softly.

Severus leaned in close to her ear and wrapped an arm around her as he did so.

"I am here, my love. I am here," he whispered gently. So low wa his silky whisper of a baritone that no one else could hear him save Livia who was now kneeling on the floor next to the sofa.

"Severus," Erszhebet sighed again.

"It's alright, I am here - it's Severus," he whispered gently.

Severus stroked her wet hair and then her face with his other hand. He shuddered as her head moved slightly away from him and her soft lips grazed his hand.

"I love you, Severina," he said softly. "Come back to me. Don't leave me to live without you."

There was a brief stillness.

Erszhebet began to regain consciousness fully. Her eyelids fluttered again and then opened. She turned her head fully towards Severus.

As Severus looked into her eyes he gasped with shock.

Erszhebet's once milk chocolate brown eyes were now a clear bright amber hue.

"It is done," said Livia simply.

Erszhebet tried to get up and found that she was weak. Severus eased her gently back onto the sofa. "You will hurt yourself," he said softly to her.

"Here drink this," said Livia as she handed Severus a hot drink of some sort which Marilyn had handed her. "This will speed up the recovery process. Drink it all, my dear, it's an herbal tea from home and it will help."

Erszhebet nodded slightly. She was too tired to speak and her head was spinning slightly from weakness.

Severus wrapped an arm around Erszhebet, helping her to sit up, and held the rather large mug to her lips with his free hand.

Professor McGonagall was touched to see the love and tenderness that Severus had for Erszhebet. Erszhebets relatives were also. Yes, all was as it should be with them, thought Livia to herself. She did not care that Madam Pomfrey was feeling less than charitable now that she knew about Erszhebet.

Livia could handle her easily if she ever found out that Erszhebet or her children were being disrespected or mistreated. With Severus around she knew it would never come to that; he wouldn't stand for any nonsense from anyone. Too bad Caitlin's father had not had balls like Severus Snape did, she thought.

[[[]]]

Livia had shown Erszhebet and Severus to one of the B&B rooms so that Erszhebet could freshen up before going to Salem Street. They would all go together so that Livia, Marilyn and Brian could show them some of the more interesting shops that were unfortunately tucked out of the way. Like most of things in New York City the shops there were open 24-hours-a-day so there was plenty of time. There was no need to rush, she had said with a smile.

Livia had provided a fresh change of clothes for Erszhebet; a lovely ankle-length Sarong-styled skirt in the same rich dark blue that she herself wore embroidered with the same ornamental design as the cuff in silver and gold and tied on the left side. The rich cream-coloured top was almost backless and had a low scoop neck in the front and short sleeves.

Madame Pomfrey wanted to go on ahead and Professor McGonagall decided to go with her so that she had company. Livia thought it was just as well. She knew Minerva would need to talk some sense into the Mediwitch. However, it would be no surprise if they went back to Hogwarts tonight. Livia was certain that Erszhebet and Severus would return to an empty home with just a note to indicate that anyone else had ever been there.

Livia left her niece and Severus alone. She felt they needed some time to themselves after the events of that afternoon.

Erszhebet stretched out across the bed; she had not dressed yet and lay with the towel draped across her. The tea had energized her and she felt much better.

She'd had a hot shower after Severus filled her in on what happened once she passed out. He also told her about the startling change in her eyes. It had take Erszhebet half an hour just to recover from the shock of that alone once she saw it for herself.

It was too much for her to get her head around. She felt like some sort of freak now and she was also feeling like she had been betrayed and let down by people who did not seem to make much of an effort to truly protect her.

Severus sat next to her quietly. He was still marveling at the dramatic change in her eyes.

At last Erszhebet spoke.

"I'm sorry, Severus," she said. "I am so, so sorry."

"For what," he asked. "You have nothing to be sorry for, nothing at all."

"Yes I do," Erszhebet replied forlornly. "I have ruined your life - with all this - with whatever it is that I am. I, I understand...if you...if you want to go...you must hate me. You have no obligations towards me."

She turned on her side away from him, not wanting him to see the tears that had started to fall. She did not want to lose him; but Erszhebet was not going to pressure Severus into remaining with her.

Severus leaned over and pulled Erszhebet up to him and held her.

"There is no blame to be placed and I most certainly do not hate you," he said quietly. "I am not going anywhere. There is no pressure for me to remain I assure you. I will always be here because I want to be."

"Severus," Erszhebet whispered through her tears.

Severus looked at his partner. To him she was still beautiful and he loved her very much, even when she cried.

"Yes, Angel?" he asked gently as he wiped the tears from her cheeks.

For some reason that made Erszhebet cry even more.

"Am I?" she choked out.

"Are you what?" asked Severus.

"Am I...am I still your Angel," asked Erszhebet looking intensely with those now tear-filled amber eyes. She looked like she was in pain. She was - however it was the emotional pain that comes with uncertainty; the uncertainly of whether or not dreams had been shattered and wondering if everything you once thought you had was now lost.

Severus almost laughed from the shock of it; to him the question was absurd. But this was no laughing matter. Erszhebet had every right to question him after what had happened. It was not right that she had been put in this position. Damn them all - damn them all to that mythological Muggle Hell.

"Yes; yes you are," he replied quietly but firmly without hesitation. "Nothing will ever change that."

Erszhebet starting crying harder, but soundlessly, out of the sheer relief of being let out of her misery.

"I am afraid I must tell you that you are stuck with me for life, Miss Bathory," whispered Severus in Erszhebet's ear as he wrapped her tightly in his arms.

"You need more time to consider this, Severus, there are still things you don't know," said Erszhebet through her tears and sniffles.

"No I don't," he replied without hesitation.

Severus eased her back from him slightly so that he could look into her eyes.

"I love you, Severina," he said. "And if you will still have me, I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

"Are you sure," Erszhebet gasped. They had never quite spoken of it in those terms before.

"Yes, really and truly," came her answer. "More than ever, my Angel. I don't have much to offer you, but you have my word that I will do my best by you..."

Severus pulled her closer and kissed her deeply; easing his tongue into her slightly open mouth and kissing her with all the love and passion he could tap into. One hand moved across her back as the other moved through her still wet hair.

Erszhebet closed her eyes and moved onto her back. She kept her eyes closed and moaned as Severus eased his body onto hers and moved between her legs. She wrapped one arm across his back and another went through his soft black hair. He was still dressed in his customary white shirt and black pants, but she could feel that he wanted her. His erection was straining against his pants as he moved against her. Even like this it felt good.

"Do you still want me that way," whispered Erszhebet breathlessly as she opened her eyes momentarily.

"Yes," he rasped. Severus was just as breathless as she was. His black eyes seemed to bore to the very centre of her soul as he spoke and returned her gaze. "Do you want me?"

"Make love to me Severus," Erszhebet whispered softly. "I want you to...I need you to...again..."

Severus needed to make love to her again just as much as she needed him. Erszhebet did not have to say it twice. He jumped off and stripped down before she could change her mind even had she wanted to. Erszhebet gasped - she was taken aback at the sight of him. Severus seemed much more than she remembered and was visibly throbbing; so much did he want her still.

"Now, please," she said hoarsely as Severus entered her. Erszhebet could not have stood to wait longer. "Severus," she sighed over and over between moans as she felt the heat and fullness of him and pulled him deeper. She could not get enough of him; it was so much more than she seemed to be able to recall. Although she was not really in the frame of mind to recall much at the moment.

Hearing his name on Erszhebet's lips in the throes of passion spurred Severus on. He thought he would explode from the warmth, wetness and tightness that seemed to grab at him and pull him ever deeper. Severus changed position and pulled Erszhebet up onto him as he sat up almost against the headboard. The two lovers moaned in almost perfect synchronicity in time with each thrust and return.

"Severina I love you," moaned Severus as he orgasmed deep inside her. "Gods how I do love you so much..."

[[[]]]

They would end up making love yet another time and then another time after that and both of them would need to shower before finally being ready to join Erszhebet's relatives downstairs. Severus had tidied up his clothes with his wand. It was not too late in the evening so there was plenty of time to see the sights of Salem Street and then go home to rest up for the journey to France tomorrow morning.

They do make a striking couple, thought Livia as she watched Severus with Erszhebet. Erszhebet had her arm tucked in his and looked quite fetching in the outfit Livia had given her. Livia's eyes were drawn to Erszhebet's midriff. Her niece was going to become a mother sooner than she or her soon-to-be husband could even believe though neither had any idea of it yet. So much for the revolutionary new cherry-flavoured combination lubricant and contraception oil she had planned to give to Severus. Livia smiled to herself. Won't that be a lovely surprise for them, she thought. They would be great parents of that she also had no doubts.

[[[]]]

They all made their way outside and down the alleyway connected to the shop which led to the entrance to Salem Street. They reached the brick wall at the end and Livia tapped out the points of the Triquetra on the brick wall.

The symbol materialized and glowed. The brick wall on which it had been tapped disappeared and a large set of oversized frosted heavy glass doors materialised in its place engraved with 'SS & MMW' in elaborate script and slid open.

"Welcome to the shops of Salem Street and Malleus Maleficarum Way open for the discerning shopper 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Not too discerning if you like to hang 'round the Way though, hee hee." said a slightly bored male voice over the speakers at the entrance.

"Cut the crap Huckleberry," interrupted another angry voice sounding every inch the boss he was.

"Ahem, hem, as I was saying before I was so RUDELY interrupted," continued Huckleberry, "42 levels, 62,442 shops, 1,214 food courts, and an extensive array of entertainment and leisure facilities for the entire family. If you can't find it here then baby it straight don't exist!" Huckleberry then laughed at his own pitiful attempt at witticism. "Oohhhh I crack me up!"

"HUCKLEBERRY!" roared the other voice.

"Sheesh, some people have like no sense of humour. Anyways, welcome and we hope you enjoy your visit. Do come again. Yadda Yadda Yadda...Blah Blah Blah, so forth and so on..."

There was what sounded like a massive bust-up at the other end.

"Another Lee Jordan," muttered Severus thinking back to certain Quidditch match play-by-plays that almost always consisted of similar rows between Professor McGonagall and one the students from her own house who did the play-by-play commentary.

"Who?" asked Erszhebet.

"I will explain later," replied Severus.

They were now facing three security guards. Two were by each side of the entrance to yet another set of large frosted glass doors with elaborate engraved script and the other was standing opposite them in front of a vast room of coat racks and cubby holes. There was an assortment of rather complicated looking equipment including a scanning machine similar to the ones at airports.

"Any of you folks want to check anything in?" asked the guard in front of the coat room.

After they all replied 'no' the guard said "alrighty then, Magical and Muggle weapons check,".

Severus looked at the man as if the man had been hit upside the head with his own nightstick and was permanently brain damaged.

"A Magical and Muggle weapons check??" asked Severus incredulously. He had never heard of anything like it or seen any equipment like this in Diagon Alley.

Brian looked at Severus like he was from another planet. "Of course - this is America...this is New York....what did you expect an old-fashioned strip search?" he said.

Brian then mumbled under his breath, "Lord have mercy English people are so backward."

The guard checked for wands and other magical weaponry. He made a note of Severus' wand including its make and craft details and gave him a computer printout to review and also for a fingerprint. After Severus had pressed an index finger to the paper the guard handed back his wand and put the signed printout on a little tray which floated over to the room. A white-gloved gold hand emerged from it and handed paper to a clerk who disappeared into the big room. The same then happened with Marilyn and Brian, both of whom carried wands. However, Marilyn did not really need one being the Bathory that she was.

"Fingerprinting...with no ink?" said Erszhebet. Have mercy, these American Wizards were obsessed with security even though it was strange.

The guard then checked for any Muggle weaponry that might be smuggled in as well. He had all bags and purses placed on the conveyor belt of the scanning machine and then scanned them while each of the group walked through an elaborate Wizarding version of a Muggle surveillance device.

"What are they looking for - Molotov Cocktails and Uzis?" asked Erszhebet incredulously as she tried not to laugh. The whole situation was just absurd, almost farcical.

"Ahh I KNEW I forgot something...matter of fact I think those are on the list," said the guard absent-mindedly. "Thanks for reminding me, I keep forgetting. Now where is the damn list anyway..."

"What are those," asked Severus with a puzzled look on his face. He thought this guard must be the long-lost American dunderhead cousin of Neville Longbottom.

That was all he needed, an American shopping precinct filled with what seemed to be annoying Gryffindor rejects.

"I will explain later," Erszhebet lost it and could barely stand up she was laughing so hard and trying to hide it badly.

Erszhebet and Severus followed Livia with Marilyn and Brian behind them to another set of large frosted glass doors and then stepped through once they slid open.

Erszhebet couldn't believe it.

"A Shopping Mall??!" she said incredulously. She had not been paying much attention to the announcements. She was expecting a real street.

"'The Largest Wizarding Mall in the Americas since 1776'," said Marilyn as she pointed to a sign which said just that in big bold neon red, white and blue lettering which flashed off and on.

"How typically American," snorted Erszhebet.

Before Severus could say anything about Brian's remark about English people being backward Erszhebet whispered in his ear. "But you aren't backward in bed are you mon machine d'un rouge ardent d'amour."

Severus nearly passed out from the shock of hearing Erszhebet talk like that - him a red-hot love machine indeed! "They must have slipped something in your tea - you seem to have lost your mind. You must have had another hard knock to the head when you fell, Miss Bathory."

Secretly Severus was very pleased to know she fancied the pants off him and of course she knew it.

"You weren't talking like that an hour ago," she replied in a whisper so no one else could hear them.

"Neither of us was talking an hour ago," said Severus quietly under his breath with a mischievous grin. "Your mouth was otherwise occupied as I recall with great pleasure, Miss Bathory." Gods what this woman brought out of him! "I commend you for such a valiant effort."

"Ahem, so was yours Professor Snape," Erszhebet shot back under her breath trying not to laugh. "You should win an award for that tongue of yours; you do know how to work it. I must say I do not recall hearing any complaints from you amidst your considerable moans so I thank you for your commendation."

Severus could not help himself at this point. He laughed. It was quite something for him. "You are a bad influence on me, my Angel," he whispered silkily. "What would Minerva and Poppy think of your corruption of my innocence."

"Minerva and Poppy need to get laid - really laid," said Erszhebet with a smirk. "Especially since it must have dried up and fallen out along with their brain cells if they think you are innocent!"

Livia took them over to a buggy and scooter rental facility. "It's the proper way to get around the place to be honest. Easier on the back and feet. And the racks make it handy to carry all of your shopping. You won't be able to see it all in a day, not even in a month.

It is better to pick and choose - but it usually takes at least a few months just to get through all of the directory listings and summaries. By that time some of the shops have closed and new ones have moved in."

"All right!" said Brian. "They finally got motorcycles. Now that's what I'm talking about!" he was admiring a sleek Harley-Davidson.

Livia also chose a Harley for herself. "These will fit in the elevators as well but there are also ramps all over the place to get you up and down. Better take a map - people have been known to get lost and never be found again...there is only the one way out of here."

Erszhebets eyebrows went up almost over her forehead. She was not expecting that in a Mall and was not expecting a motorcycle ride from someone her aunt's age. She could not see Minerva and Poppy doing such a thing. They must not have been in here that long, she thought.

Erszhebet picked a Harley as well and Severus got on behind her and held her waist. He had never been on any such Muggle contraption before and felt a right fool. He did not have much choice in the matter though.

"Is there anything in particular you would like to see?" asked Marilyn once she had climbed behind Brian.

"I know what you should see", said Livia. "This will quite interest you I daresay Professor Snape."

"Oh no," mumbled Marilyn. "We will be here all night at this rate..." Her aunt was no stranger to the Dark Arts, she was a Bathory after all, and there were some rather unique things to be seen 'round the Way. They never could come in here and not have a wander in the darkest parts of the mall.

[[[]]]

The party revved up and roared through the first level with their hair whipping out behind them. Erszhebet was reminded of the Muggle shopping complex called Bluewater in Greenhithe, Kent in England. It was said to be one of the largest shopping malls in Europe. However, as large as that was at least you could do it on foot. The company which had designed and built it was American but she doubted that they had any involvement with Wizarding complexes.

This place was light and airy and decorated in pastels and neutrals with the odd bit of bold colour here and there. The whole place was quite vast and just seemed to go on for miles. It was broken down into a number of coloured areas which were mapped out on maps so heavy and complex that a rucksack was needed just to carry one. The Way was uniquely mapped out in startling shades of black, gray and purple.

There were not so many people about at this time of day so getting around was fairly easy. Erszhebet followed her aunt and cousins.

Wherever it was that they were going seemed to be off the beaten track. The décor started to change and the lightness grew to dark as they went deeper. It was almost like being caught up in a Total Eclipse. The airiness disappeared. It was creepy and Erszhebet did not like it. Everything was heavily Gothic in strong blacks and purples. She got a chill up her back. An eerie foreboding sort of chill. The only comfort she had was from the warmth of Severus who was holding her so close Erszhebet could lean back on him as she handled the cycle.

Livia stopped suddenly in front of a pair of giant ebony doors engraved with 'MMW' and a skull and crossbones.

Not too subtle, thought Severus. It reminded him a bit of the Dark Mark of Voldemort which had finally disappeared from his arm when the Dark Lord was vanquished.

"What...what is this place?" squeaked Erszhebet.

"Malleus Maleficarum Way," replied her aunt. "Afraid?"

"No," replied Severus as he gave Erszhebet a squeeze. He did not like it any more than Erszhebet did but was not about to lose face in front of the Bathorys. Not liking it and not being afraid were two totally different things.

"I would have been most surprised if you were, Severus," said Livia.

Everyone stepped down and made their way through the doors.

Severus was expecting another Knockturn Alley. He got anything but. This made Knockturn Alley look like a child's fairy tale.

There was none of the excitement and hub-bub of the Salem Street part of the Mall. The shop fronts were fairly dark and the lighting was dim. The odd thing or two shuffled silently along in the vast deepness of the dim light ahead. The dim light disappeared into pure blackness. But there was something else in the blackness. An even darker blackness on top of blackness.

Erszhebet clung to Severus. She was terrified and he could feel it.

"What it is?" he whispered. "What's wrong?"

"I don't like this, something is not righ," she whispered.

It was so quiet that even her aunt heard their whispers.

"You feel it too then, child?" she asked.

"Yes...I do...," replied Erszhebet in a hush. "I can't put my finger on it - but something is not right; even in a place like this."

"Erszhebet's right Aunt Livia; we feel it too," whispered Marilyn. "Something here has changed..."

"We need to get out of here," whispered Brian. He took out his wand but before he could say 'Lumos' Livia reached out and put his arm down.

"Why don't you send up some fireworks announcing 'we are here'," she said quietly.

"Let's go, I don't like this," said Brian. Manly pride be damned.

"Bathorys do not run. We are not cowards. It has more to fear from us then we ever will from it," hissed Livia.

"What do you propose?" asked Severus with a smirk. "I take it that we have some work to do?"

"Erszhebet and Marilyn, stand to either side of me," ordered Livia. "Severus and Brian, take your places next to them with your wands out. Don't be careful when you use them."

Severus gave her a look, but did as he was instructed. Now was not the time to have a row.

When everyone was ready Livia spoke again.

"Severus, do you see that...in the blackness up ahead?" asked Livia. "Do you know what that is?"

"Yes - I have come across such like it before - they served the Dark Lord," replied Severus. "It is similar to a Lethifold, except that it does not just glide across the ground and can grow to gigantic proportions. Some refer to it as a Lethimentorgigantus and it is thought to be of the same origin as the Dementors. Wizards are not known for logic or concentration which is why so many have lost their lives by blundering into them. Their blackness is unique and it is not entirely concealed by darkness as we can see. It does one well to pay attention to one's surroundings and to use logic when faced with such an enemy. As you can see the atmosphere here is changed - a clue that it is here...

Unlike the Lethifold or a Dementor, the Patronus will not work. Dark Magic must be used to vanquish it; any combination of dark curses will suffice. However, a precise aim to the centre of its blackness must be maintained. The creature's nervous system overloads and then it implodes on itself. When you see it glow and then it begins to pulse it is close to implosion. You have about a minute or so get as far back as you can from it. It is not enough to simply repel it as it will continually seek you out until you destroy it or it destroys you. However, unlike the Lethifold, it will not move for you unless you move towards it. This aids considerably in destroying it."

"Excellent, Professor; I am very impressed indeed," said Livia.

"Brian can stay here if he likes," said Severus silkily. "Only one of us is required."

Brian jumped back immediately pulling Marilyn with him.

"I am going with you," said Erszhebet firmly. She may be afraid, but she was not going to leave Severus' side. No way.

Livia nodded. It was good to see that in spite of her great fear that Erszhebet at least did have some backbone.

"Erszhebet, you have within you the ability to destroy this and many other Dark Creatures. A wand can be useful to you - but it is not a necessary requirement for our kind. We are natural magicians as it were.

They are no match for you unless you forget yourself and what you are and allow them to be. You must focus your energy on the task at hand and concentrate on what is likely the most effect solution to eliminate it. Do you understand me?" asked Livia.

"I think so," said Erszhebet.

"I am not asking what you think, child. I am asking what you know," replied Livia firmly.

"Yes - all I need are either my hands or I must direct my own energy outwards even if I cannot touch it..." said Erszhebet. "I must focus and keep my mind and body free from fear. They have no control unless I give it to them."

"Very good; remember that. It is our truth regardless of the challenges we face. Darkness has no power over us unless we allow it to. When that thing pulses we grab each others hands - our speed will take us back in no time."

"Ready?" asked Severus. He was well aware of the preternatural capabilities of their kind. It was useful to have in a situation like this. Erszhebet on the other hand, had a lot to learn about what she really was.

Livia and Erszhebet nodded and then Severus moved forward briskly along the dimness with them on either side of him.

The blacker thing in the blackness ahead started to move towards them.

"It's moving now; coming straight at us," said Erszhebet matter-of-factly.

Two beats of silence.

"NOW!" shouted Severus.

Severus let loose with an impressive array of Dark Curses, bands of ever changing colours of light, lightning and fire issuing from his wand while Livia and Erszhebet conjured the same using only their innate ability aimed at the very centre of the thing. Erszhebet paid attention to what she was doing and absorbed some of what she heard from Severus and then repeated what she had heard using her left hand almost as if it were a wand and then changed to her own ability again. At one point she hurled vicious balls of what looked like lightning at it.

The thing glowed brightly, illuminating the whole of the 'Way. It was enormous and the companions could not see past it. It was like a massive blob of a cloak and was at least five stories high taking up the whole of the Atrium. Then the pulsing started. They did not need to do anything more.

Livia grabbed one of Severus' hands and he in turn grasped Erszhebets

Before Severus could think about it - they were back by Marilyn and Brian near the entrance.

"Behind that post, in the corner NOW!" bellowed Severus. "Close your eyes!"

Everyone did as instructed and some seconds later there was a hissing and finally a boom. All went silent for a moment and the lights flickered on and off. Finally they came on fully and the dim lights grew brighter - although still not as bright as Salem Way.

Severus poked his head around the corner and then moved out into the corridor. "We did it," he said simply.

Livia moved out next to him. The creature was completely gone and the usual grim and not-quite-dim atmosphere of the 'Way was restored. People started to poke their heads out of shops and over the balconies above.

"Cowards," mumbled Livia as Erszhebet moved forward and then Brian and Marilyn.

There was a low rumble. "Can we go now, I'm starving," said Brian as he held his grumbling stomach.

Marilyn sighed. "Only my husband would think of food at a time like this..."

"I think that was enough for one night," said Livia. "Let's go."

Erszhebet did not have to be told twice. She could not get away fast enough and once she and Severus were on the Harley she raced back to the rental place at a breakneck speed. Her hands were shaking so bad she could barely hand over the Muggle Dollars for the fee. Severus had to do it for her.

"Its ok, love, we are leaving," he said softly.

Never had a group of people left a building so quickly. They did not stop until they reached the edge of the alleyway.

"Let's go to your place Erszhebet, if you don't mind Aunt Livia," said Marilyn.

"I was about to suggest that very thing," said Livia.

[[[]]]

Erszhebet did not breathe a sigh of relief until they were safely in her loft. She raced in and turned on all of the lights and closed the curtains in the living room.

As she turned around her attention was drawn to the sideboard. There was a note written on parchment placed on one of her decorative pieces of artwork. She picked it up and read it quickly even though she knew it was only meant for Severus' eyes. She frowned. There was no mistaking it. She looked hurt.

Severus looked at her with concern and then took the note from her.

Dear Severus,

Poppy has decided to return to Hogwarts this evening rather than wait until tomorrow. Kindly thank Severina for her hospitality for me. It was most gracious of her to accommodate us for the past week. I thought it best to not have Poppy return alone in the state she was in and so have left with her.

Poppy cannot accept Severina or your relationship with her given what we have learned today and therefore she feels it would be inappropriate to remain under the same roof any longer. She will not be coming over to France and I daresay no doubt she will want a word with Albus. I pity her as she will be barking up the wrong tree with that so to speak.

I haven't seen her this worked up before and it is not a pleasant thing to experience, especially as Severina has been nothing but kind, accepting and gracious the whole of the week towards Poppy and myself.

I have had a brief word with Albus myself already and he is in agreement that Severina should return to Hogwarts with you. He looks forward to meeting her at last and is actually quite excited about her ideas for her Advanced Muggle Studies course. There may be some problems with the Ministry but he says do not be conrned. They will be dealt with.

Poppy will have to face the facts sooner or later when you both return to Hogwarts. I wouldn't waste too much time worrying about it; we all have our prejudices in one way or another and sooner or later the universe makes us face them.

Hopefully Poppy will grow out of hers. Albus won't tolerate any foolishness at the School or elsewhere and will forbid her to reveal anything of what she has learned about Severina. Hogwarts should be a place of refuge, not persecution; though as you know we do not always succeed in this. I think Severina has been through enough without anyone here adding to her troubles. Albus will bind Poppy if necessary, so please no worries. It really would be the height of ridiculousness if it came to that however.

I am sorry to have had to put this to you in a note, Fawkes took it back for me as it was much easier, but Poppy was determined to not be there when you returned. I hope that all is well between yourself and Severina and I look forward to seeing you in two weeks time if Severina will still have me. Fawkes wishes to see you again and to meet Severina before she comes to the School and will pop over while you are in Paris. I think he rather fancies ome time in the country as well...the sly thing.

Please keep this to yourself. I don't want Severina to be any more hurt and upset than she already has been. Make up some excuse for Poppy. If anyone can it most certainly is you.

Take care of yourself and Severina. I myself am glad that you have each other.

Yours sincerely,

Minerva McGonagall

"Damn her," said Severus. He then swore a blue streak and hurled a piece of glass artwork across the room shattering it into dozens of pieces. Everyone in the room was taken aback.

"I am sorry I was right," said Livia quietly. "I am sorry Erszhebet. Give her time and let her have her space. It is in her best interest to see sense."

"Whatever; I don't care," said Erszhebet.

"Yes you do," said Marilyn. She could see it as could everyone else.

Erszhebet shook her head and wiped away the tears which had started to fall.

"Forget it," she said.

Brian's stomach rumbled again.

"Let's eat. It will have to be Deli - I can't be bothered to cook," said Erszhebet.

She led the way back through the kitchen into the sun room. While her relatives arranged the seating. lighting and set the table, Severus and Erszhebet arranged the food silently in serving dishes and on platters. There were Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Pasta Salad, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Pickles, Rye Bread, Sandwich Rolls and Brown and French Mustards.

Erszhebet's hands were shaking still - not from the mall, but from what she felt was yet another betrayal. This time by Poppy.

"Come here," whispered Severus. He pulled Erszhebet into his arms and held her tightly.

"I don't want to come between you and your friends," whispered Erszhebet in his ear as she returned his hug.

"You haven't and you won't. It is her problem. She is a grown woman and she will have to deal with it. I am not losing you just to suit her or anyone else," replied Severus.

He looked into her eyes and smoothed her hair. "You are the best thing that has ever happened to me; I want you to know that," he said.

"Right back at you," said Erszhebet. She tried to smile but her eyes were filled with sadness and he mouth was more a grimace than a smile.

"No tears, not one," said Severus gently. "I will not have you crying over her. It's not worth it."

Erszhebet nodded. She must move forward and not think about it. She must for his sake if nothing else.

They finished their preparations and placed the food on the table in the sun room along with Iced Tea and Lemonade. There were French pastries, Chocolate Bread Pudding and Rice Pudding with a hint of Vanilla and Cinnamon for dessert.

Everyone took their seats and Erszhebet started the conversation.

"What the hell was up with that in that Mall?" she asked. Sometimes subtlety was not a strong suit of hers.

"Someone tampering with things that ought not be tampered with," said Livia. "That was some very nasty Dark Magic going on down there. But that is the problem with the 'Way. You can learn a lot but it's always at your own peril - hence the symbol on the door. But, in order to fight the Darkness you must know it. We certainly proved that."

"Does it have anything to do with what we were told has been happening in Eastern Europe?" asked Severus.

"No, I am certain of it," said Livia. "As you know Dark Magic is very attractive to too many of the wrong sorts. Once they have had a taste some never seem to get enough of it. In that case, whatever it is that they were conjuring was going to backfire on them and anyone else nearby even if they are not a part of it. They opened a door and then either did not have the knowledge or the nerve to close it. Perhaps even both."

Severus nodded in agreement. "There are always such circumstances in the Wizarding world - and not just on the part of Dark Wizards. People dabble where they should not."

"That happens even with Mugissants - Muggles," said Erszhebet.

"The problem is that if New York City falls like the others, then it will likely be overrun with all sorts of Dark Magic like what we just saw; not just the one that seems to have taken hold in Europe. It would be a hell of a job to get through all of that before the bigger problem could be addressed. It could be done - it just means investing more time than we want to running all over the 5 Boroughs. Remember, only one of them is connected to the mainland...The Bronx. The rest are all islands. Staten Island is one; Brooklyn and Queens are two on one, Manhattan is the other."

"Great, just great," muttered Brian who did not know anything of New York City outside of Manhattan. "The stuff that horror movies are made of..."

Livia put down her sandwich with a sigh.

"Brian I let you get away with it tonight, but you cannot always let someone else do the dirty work - what happens when there is no one left to do it for you," said Livia. "You have to be able to handle yourself. You cannot be afraid to use what you know for the greater good."

"Greater good my ass, it's about saving my neck," mumbled Brian.

"You won't have an ass or a neck to save if you carry on like you did tonight...," said Livia darkly. "You can take that whichever way you like..."

Everyone ate in silence for a few minutes.

"Severus, I must say I was not terribly surprised at how you handled yourself. It's good to see that you do 'know your stuff' as Dumbledore says, your reputation precedes you." said Livia. "No wonder Dumbledore has such faith in you and your abilities..."

"I have had considerable experience, as you no doubt are aware from the Headmaster," replied Severus. It would have been a great shock had Dumbledore not spoken to her about his exploits for the Order since he seemed to already said so much else. "Besides, there was no other option. Kill or be killed as Severina so aptly said..."

"I can't believe that all of those people were just hiding away..." said Erszhebet. "They could have done what we did quite easily. They couldn't be bothered to even make the effort."

"Dark Magicians are amongst the most cowardly and hypocritical of species on this planet," said Livia.

"Very true - as demonstrated this evening," said Severus. "The next time they will have to clean up their own mess."

"Would serve them right - let them stew in their own crap for a few days," said Erszhebet.

The conversation then changed to the loft and its décor. Marilyn and Brian had a similar building the next street over from Mockingbird Lane, theirs too bought from Livia. They admired what Erszhebet had done with her

The clean-up was quick and easy after dinner and then Erszhebet showed everyone around. She answered her cousins' questions about shopping details and how long it had taken to whip her home into shape.

Arrangements were made for everyone to meet at Erszhebets home in the French countryside in two weeks time. Once contact details were exchanged and all goodbyes were said and done with it was Midnight.

After a hot shower Erszhebet climbed into bed and waited for Severus to come out of the bathroom. Nothing was ever easy or simple about her life. It never would be. It was something she had never wanted to face which she now had no choice but to accept. She closed her eyes and eased back into her pillows. But thank the Goddess and God for Severus. She only hoped he would never regret being with her and that she could make him happy.

Soon Erszhebet was fast asleep flat out on her back - worn out by the events of the day.

The bathroom door opened not long after and Severus emerged. He had been quite fastidious about his grooming since meeting Erszhebet. It was easy to be that way now as the darkness and depression about himself and his life which had plagued him from childhood had been vanquished for the most part. Being with Erszhebet had given him the strength begin to rise above it.

Severus smiled to himself as he looked at the now sleeping figure. He walked quietly across the room and eased himself in to bed next to carefully so that she would not wake up. Goddess knows she had been through enough and needed a good night's sleep - they had so much to do tomorrow.

"Severus," Erszhebet mumbled softly as she turned on her side and threw an arm around him, her hand almost hitting his nose in the process.

"Yes?" he asked as he turned to look at her, thinking she had awakened.

"Severus," she said again softly - almost in a quiet moan.

She hadn't woken up. Erszhebet was still fast asleep and had a soft little smile. Severus was surprised to see this and wondered what she was dreaming about. Only Erszhebet Bathory could not only dream about him; she could dream about him and smile. How about that...Severus was a lucky man - very lucky indeed.

"Sweet dreams, my Angel," he whispered softly as he pulled Erszhebet into his arms and kissed her goodnight. She moved in her sleep adjusting herself wrapping a leg around his and holding him tight with her head resting under his chin as Severus closed his eyes.

"Mmm...Severina," Severus sighed softly. He too was now fast asleep; his body had given in to fatigue.

Both were now fast asleep in each others arms; each lost in their dreams of the other.

Author notes: Next: The morning after yet another eventful day before. Severus questions Erszhebet on his suspicions of what is the darkest secret of her childhood; the action moves to Paris; and Severus has some secrets of his own to reveal after recovering from a near-fatal encounter with a giant Micky Mouse alarm clock.
