Author's Note:
This is my favourite fanfic that I’ve written yet. Yay! It is a RW/HG songfic, to ‘Waiting for the Sun’ by Powderfinger. For those who don’t know, Powderfinger is a wonderful Australian band, they have heaps of great songs, and this is one of my favourites. So please read and review!

Waiting for the Sun

Clouds of smoke rose from the Forbidden Forest. Magical sparks were flying through the air, some red, some green. And occasionally a voice could be heard. Screaming in pain and anger, yelling a curse. The final battle had begun. And on the hill on which Hogwarts stood, two people sat together. Watching. Waiting. And hoping.

This will be an uncertain time for us, my love

I can hear the echo of your voice in my head

Singing my love

Ron looked over at Hermione. Her head was leaning on his shoulder, and her eyes were watching the forest. Ron sighed. Her eyes, her beautiful eyes, were full of fear. Fear, determination, sadness and hope. And on top of all of these emotions, a tear formed, and rolled down her face. Ron brushed her tear away, and hugged Hermione.

I can see your face there in my hands, my love

I have been blessed by your grace and care, my love

Singing my love

Ron looked back out over the forest. There, amongst the trees, the fate of the wizarding world was being decided. Two people were in the forest - Harry Potter, the boy who lived, and the Dark Lord, Lord Voldemort. The epitomes of good and evil, fighting to the death before them. Ron had known that this day would come, but never imagined that it would be so soon. Harry had fought Voldemort before, but this time it was different. This time, his best friends were not by his side. Harry's place was battling Lord Voldemort - his friends' place was not. So this time, Ron and Hermione sat and watched from afar, as the sun slowly rose before them.

There's a place for us sitting here waiting for the sun

And it calls me back into the safe arms that I know

The two figures sat still, side by side. No words were spoken between them - none needed to be. Ron held Hermione's hand tightly in his. He glanced at her, and for a brief moment was happy. In these last few months, Hermione was the only person that brought him happiness. They had never officially got together, there had never been a moment where they threw aside their conflict and confessed their love. They had slowly grown closer together, until the bond between them was unbreakable. They both felt guilt, of course, that they were not with Harry during this climatic moment. But this was Harry's destiny, not theirs. Their destiny was to help Harry, to support Harry, to comfort Harry. But destiny hadn't mentioned them falling in love.

For every step you're further away from me, my love

I grow more unsteady on my feet, my love

Singing my love

So there they sat, on the hill outside Hogwarts. Ron and Hermione, their hands, hearts and hopes intertwined. The sun rose above the trees and warmed their faces. But they didn't notice. Their eyes were fixed on the forest, waiting for Harry to emerge. Hoping that he would emerge. Praying that he would win.

There's a place for us sitting here waiting for the sun

And it calls me back into the safe arms that I know

There's a place for us sitting here waiting for the sun

And it calls me back into the safe arms that I know

Ron saw an explosion within the forest, and felt another stab of guilt that he was not there, fighting with Harry. But he knew that was not an option. Harry's place was there, alone, fighting for the lives of millions of innocent wizards and witches.

And Ron and Hermione's place was here. Together. Waiting for the sun.

And waiting for Harry.

We're waiting for the sun

Now we're waiting for the sun
