The Final Battle
The battle was arriving, and they were making last preparations. It wasn't easy to say goodbye, especially when you might not see your loved ones again. You might want to know whom the battle was against. I'll tell you, this is the battle between Godric Gryffindor, and Salazar Slytherin. No one really wanted to fight, but they knew that if they didn't, their families would suffer. They had to win the battle, or they would loose their freedom, and all the Muggles and Muggle-born would be killed. That was something they couldn't allow to happen. They were willing to lay down their lives, if it meant that their families could live and prosper.
Godric was spending his last day with his wife Rowena. She had kept her last name, so as not to confuse the students. Both of them knew that this would probably be the last time they met. Salazar was focused on killing Godric, and wouldn't stop at anything. He blamed Godric for the fact that one of his sons had died at the hands of Muggles. You ask why? Because Godric kept protecting the Muggles from everything, it was only natural that that would lead Salazar to blame Godric. Godric had always ignored Salazar when he was told that Muggles were evil, and then their school had been attacked by them; Godric just took away their memories and sent them back to their world. A handful of students had died. Amongst them was one of Salazar's children. At that the one that had inherited his ability to speak Parselmouth; since then he had killed all the Muggles that he crossed. Finally the other three founders couldn't handle him being around any longer, and had banned him. They didn't know that he had put a basilisk in a secret chamber. That is until later, when they heard some of his students talking about it. Then they had searched the whole castle, but the chamber stayed unfound. Then Salazar had started to gather his army, and had challenged them to a battle. This would be it. The battle between the two forces; neither were right, nor were they wrong.
Godric and Rowena decided to sleep together one last time, before they departed. It was bittersweet. They both knew that this would probably be the last time. But it was only later that Rowena found out that she had gotten pregnant from that encounter.
The day of the battle came. Everyone was alert, and ready to fight to the end. They parted from their families with many tears and the knowledge that it was possible that they wouldn't ever see each other again. Rowena was crying. She felt that Godric wouldn't return, knew that he had to do this, but at the same time she just wished that he didn't have to leave. She didn't know how she would live on without her love, but knew that she would try. It was a great sacrifice on her part. But she knew that somewhere, somehow they'd meet again.
Godric knew that he wouldn't return. For the first time since he could remember his eyes were watery. But he couldn't cry. It had been pound into his brain when he was a child that men don't cry. Why would they? After all, it's unmanly. Now, for once, he could cry for his wife to tell her how much he cared. He didn't want to leave her, but knew that there wasn't any other choice. So he just kissed her, and mounted his horse.
After Godric vanished Rowena went to Helga. Helga had always been there for her, and now she really needed someone like that. Normally Rowena wasn't very emotional, because she was always caught up in her studies. Godric was the only one who had ever been able to evoke any strong emotions in her. If he died, then she wouldn't even have a child to remember him by. And that wasn't for lack of trying either. Helga comforted her, and let her magic flow through her friends veins to calm her. It was then that she felt the existence of a life form in Rowena's womb. She knew what that meant, and it was still really fresh...probably only a few hours old. When she told this to Rowena she glowed with pride and happiness. She decided to ride to the battlefield to tell the news to her husband.
Godric watched as his best friend fell before him, in an attempt to shield him. It had been Salazar's doing. Now Godric only had one goal. To kill Salazar, He would not let his friend of died in vein. He held his mighty sword in his hand, and started making his way to his enemy. All fell before him, like they had for Salazar. The two met on a small hill, and the battle stopped. Who ever won this duel would decide who won the battle. Salazar's group would surrender if their leader died. But Godric's group didn't fight for wealth or for power. They fought for their families, and that was why they wouldn't give in, even if their greatest member were six feet under.
The two knew instinctively knew that it wasn't magic they should use, but their own weapons. Salazar was the first to draw his sword, and Godric drew his a split second afterwards. Thus they began the dance of death. Their swords weaving elegantly, to and fro. Finally after what felt like hours to the people watching and dueling Godric saw an opening. He struck at his enemy who fell back, mortally wounded. "I guess thou hast won, Gryffindor", he said spitting the last word out with hate. "But know this. In the future one of my heirs will take revenge upon thy bloodline. They shall kill all the Mudbloods and Muggles. But I shall not go alone." With this he threw a hidden dagger at Godric, it only nicked him, because of his armor, but that was enough, it had been poisoned. Salazar drew his last breath and died.
Godric's sight was already blurring over when Rowena and Helga arrived. Rowena began to cry over his sweaty body. There wasn't a cure known for this poison that had affected him, and he was on the deathwatch. It was only a matter of time till he was gone. He could only be thankful that it wasn't one of the more painful poisons there were. He was glad that Rowena was already on her way, so he might talk to her one last time. She spoke, "My love, if only I could have told thee this with better circumstances. I am pregnant with thy child. And now he won't even know his father. Perhaps Helga's unique powers shall help you."
Helga walked over and put her hand on Godric's brow. She sent energy through him, forcing the poison to retreat. His small wound burst open again, and the poisonous blood spilled out. It was too much for him, and he fainted. He had only started to say the words, "I'm glad you'll at least have someone." Rowena understood them though.
Late that night a spy that had been working for Salazar decided to finish what Salazar's last request had been. He assassinated Godric Gryffindor, while he was recuperating from the poison. The assassin wasn't ever caught, but Rowena left Hogwarts, not being able to bear the fact that she was now a widow. She told the story of Godric to her son, who told it to his children. The story of Godric was sent down through all the generations until all the descendents other than one were killed, and that one had been too young to remember the tale.
