Ron's Death

To Hermione and Harry, if you're reading this, I probably fell asleep last night. Sorry. I tried, I really did. I wish I could stay for you guys, to see how you turn out. Harry, you'll probably be an auror. Maybe you'll write a book about yourself and your experiences. If I'm lucky, you'll include me. Hermione, I think you'll probably be a teacher. And a great one too. I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise to you. I tried. But know that I love you, no matter what. Sorry for going mushy, Harry. I would write you both separate letters, but this is all the parchment I have. It's been great getting to meet you guys and spend six awesome, long years with you. I hope you won't forget about me too quickly. I know I won't forget about you. And Harry, don't beat yourself up, okay? It wasn't your fault. Well, it figures that I just spilled the ink. I only have a little left. Give Ginny a hug for me. I'll miss you guys so much. By the way, Hermione, you can keep the book. I doubt I'll need it any more. Harry, my chocolate frog card collection is hiding somewhere in my trunk. Keep it, please. I'd go insane if they all just got thrown away.

Ronald Weasley Ron folded the note in half, writing 'Open me, Hermione!!' on the back and placing it on the bedside table again. Ron bent his head over, kissing Hermione's forehead, and whispered softly, "I love you, Hermione." A tear rolled down his cheek, landing in her hair. Ron leaned back again, closing his eyes one last time...

Hermione awoke in the morning, feeling refreshed. She sat up, spotting the letter that Ron had left. Curiosity filled her, and she took it up in her hands. Part way through, tears clouded her eyes. In one hand she held the letter, and in the other she held one of Ron's cold, pale hands. Hermione let her fingers fall between his, squeezing him slightly. Soon, tears poured down her horrified face like a river of pain. How could this be happening to her? To them? Harry would feel terrible. Ron was right he hadn't kept his promise. Everything wasn't all right. Ron was dead. Gone. Hermione dropped the letter, gasping for breath. She laid her head on Ron's chest, sobbing into his shirt. She could smell blood, but she didn't care.

It didn't matter. Hermione just lay there, crying on the chest of the boy who would comfort her when she was upset. Tell her he loved her when she needed to hear it. Remind her of the good things in life, when all she could think of was the bad. And now he was gone. Hermione was tempted to kill herself too, but Harry wouldn't be able to handle it if both of his best friends died. Hermione looked up, staring into Ron's face. He looked so peaceful. Like for once something had gone right. That just made Hermione cry harder. How would she live without Ron? In his letter he had said he loved her, but how could you love someone who was dead? Wasn't love a feeling of great affection from one human being to another? But Ron was no longer human. He was just and empty shell with nothing inside. No life. No personality. No chess skills. No keeper training lodged in his brain. No thoughts of the girl who'd made him look a fool in fourth year. No memories of the times he and his friends shared. No...Ron.
